great sequence by Castle, blocked Cunningham on one end and then an and1 on the other

They can’t rebound with Wemby off the floor though. Kornet is already earthbound, but he is hurt too.

watching St Johns in 2024 I never would have though Daniss Jenkins would have a solidified role in the NBA, let alone on the team with the best record in the league. kinda wild that Pitino had an NBA backcourt at Iona, they probably had the 3rd most talent out of the teams UConn played in the 2023 tourney run.

A lot of times Wemby and others really leave Castle out to dry on these elbow feeds. Wemby begs for the ball then doesn’t box out the defender and Castle gets the turnover

If they didn’t play the national champs in the first round they probably make a run that year.

I have always liked Daniss Jenkins game from his time at Iona to St.John's. He has a nice mid range pull up off the dribble.

Castle had a few rough fourth quarter turnovers but also had two nice dishes for Wemby dunks to pull away. Also helped break a late press and found Champagnie for the official dagger. The Spurs go on the road and beat the best team in the East!

Finished with a double double, 16 points and 11 assists

And had Cade in absolute hell, 5-26 from the field.

Would be fun to see a SGA vs Spurs Western Final.
Would be really fun to see this rematch for the Finals (for my bank account)

Cam ends with 7 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists (3-7, 1-3 from 3, with a toe on the line on a made 2). Unlucky on a couple runners in the lane not dropping - one touched every part of the rim and came out.

He is now at 27 assists and no turnovers in his last 4 games. His scoring/shooting isn’t there in this stretch, but hard to beat the A:TO ratio.

On the down side, rookie point guard Jevon Small had 21-7-9 and got the crunch time minutes, Pippen is back, Clayton is getting run, and Ty Jerome will be back from illness next game. Minutes aren’t guaranteed even with Morant out.

He will get minutes, he’s been too good and they aren’t looking to win. He’s cemented his spot

What are they looking to do?
Well when you trade your best asset and play a bunch of young guys…you’re looking to get a better draft pick. You could’ve insinuated that, right?

So draft position? Even with the lottery?

Love the fact Castle can score 16 points and still have it be considered a great game because his position shows off his playmaking to get 11 assists and his ability to lock down an MVP candidate to get a big win.

All while only having to take one 3 since he’s playing on ball and not off ball for someone else.

The problem is can AD ever play 50 games in a season again? He's made of glass which typically gets worse as you age and he'll be 34 this time next season.
AD is who he is at this point. You hope you have him for the playoffs. But as you need to get there, they need one draft in a good year — like this one — where they get a dominant NBA future star.

Stopper.

He is a defensive stopper for sure. If he keeps this up he should be on the NBA All Defensive 1st team and I will be PO'ed if he isn't, FWIW. In that clip you will see that he is not only a great 1-on-1 defender, but that the Spurs have good help defensive principles. The other defenders stand in good positions on the court on off the ball screens and PnRs. UConn right now could sure use those principles as well as him, but Stephon is where he belongs, in the NBA, and he left at the correct time.

What really caught my attention at the 43 second mark was what Austin Rivers said, "we don't need to make this a slugfest, that's their MO. We will play our game." I can't think of any other games where that is more appropriate for UConn than tomorrow's game against St. John's and this Saturday's game against Seton Hall.

Another thing Stephon doesn't get enough credit for specifically is his defense on Terrence Shannon Jr. Before that Elite 8 game, Shannon Jr was on a heater and I really can't think of many other players that year in the country that was capable of stopping him.
