Yes, I watched him defend and it’s not good but Mahaney is a bad defender too. Brea is a 2 guard Mahaney a 1 but all in all Brea is bigger and can score, handle, get his shot off. It’s been discussed here ad nauseum especially with our main guard Hass hampered by injuries. But Brea actually looks like a player physically out there. He scored 20 points, 2 assists, 4-10 from 3 against a very good team Alabama.
Brea is completely irrelevant to the Mahaney discussion. I have no idea why this keeps being brought up

Again. Brea and Mahaney don’t play remotely the same position. On this team Brea would also be coming off the bench

How do they not play remotely the same position? Mahaney may have been brought in to play PG but it’s clear he isnt one, he’s a SG, and Brea is a SG/SF so there’s more positional overlap than not. Brea would come off the bench here too and he wouldn’t have solved our backup PG problem but at least we’d have an 8 man rotation.

Cause Intended positions notwithstanding, weren’t we recruiting Brea right up until Mahaneys commitment? So at the time it seemed pretty clear that it was one or the other. The fact that Mahaney began the season as starting PG rewrote that narrative, but based on how things have turned out I’m questioning what Hurley was thinking about Mahaney every step of the way.

Your thought process stopping point was here.
If OP wrote “Mahaney wasnt recruited to play remotely the same position as Brea” then that would have been true. But Just because Mahaney was recruited to play PG doesn’t mean he is one, so turns out he does in fact play the same position as Brea.

It was Brea or run the risk that one of the sophomores would bounce. They decided not to risk it. It wasn’t Mahaney. I don’t get how people who post so incessantly and have access to the same reported information as the rest of us flat out refuse to internalize anything that contradicts the narrative they want to push.

Quoting myself With interpolation to help with reading comprehension: “the fact that Mahaney began the season as starting PG rewrote [the] narrative [that it was either Mahaney or Brea].” That’s not how you push a narrative. If I incessantly posted that “Hurley should have chosen Brea over Ross” then that would be pushing a narrative.

BYU prevails by 1! 96-95! Great game!

BYU hardly dribbles the ball continuous passing and movement of they’re making shots they’re really good. Good size at all positions as well. Fun basketball ton watch.

Am preparing to hate watch Duke for the whole tournament… but they’re very good

Flagg went baseline on his defender and banged him backwards while contacting his chin going up for the shot, he missed and then climbed the kids back for the rebound. The only call was him getting fouled going up for the follow up, absolutely pitiful it doesn’t change with the refs. Refuse to watch anymore of that crap. The exact other end of the spectrum for us I’m afraid.

Thanks for always posting positive things about CCSU. It was a rough stretch for us Blue Devil fans as Central dropped into the abyss of D1 basketball. Coach Sellers and his staff have been nothing short of miracle workers as they righted the ship. Back-to-back 20+ win seasons is impressive regardless of the conference. Detrick Gymnasium has been alive again. Feels like the old days.

We'd love to have UConn Nation on board as we gear up for the NEC Tourney. For those of you who don't follow the NEC, all tournament games are played on the home court of the higher seed. Central's magic number is 1 to secure sole possession of the 1-seed and have home court throughout the tournament. Which means CCSU will open their tournament run on March 5 in New Britain. If they win, the next game will be on 3/8. They win that and they will be playing for an NEC title on March 11.

I'm guessing that tickets for the 3/5 quarterfinal game will likely go on sale this week at ccsubluedevils.com.

My pleasure! I've gotten credentials for the NEC semis (likely can't attend since wife's surgery is two days before semis) and championship game, so fingers crossed it'll be in Hard Hittin' !

Thanks for the update, seriously, between you and Hey Adrien. However, I will only do a golf clap for this. I remember feeling let down after CCSU won the NEC title in the regular season only to crap out to the #8 seed in the first round of the conference tournament.
Not true. They lost to the 6-seed (Wagner) who was on a heater--beating the 3-seed (Sacred Heart), then the co-champ (CCSU), then the other co-champ (Merrimack) all on the road...and then defeating a talented Howard team in the play-in game of the NCAA tournament. Those things happen. Not happening this year though.

Yes. I believe they were recruited at the same time, they could only get 1of them. I do not have “inside program info” the way many here claim to have so I do not know whether a transfer of Solo was imminent. Or Ross or Stew or anybody else. We would have to ask them and they would likely say no to anyone who does ask.
Never heard Hurley or staff comment either way but they were looking for a Joey California 3 shooter regardless of what position they played and both of those guys had that reputation of great shooter. I‘m sure the dream was that Mahaney would play point and make shots. Didn’t work out.

Yep. I agree. I think Hurley thought he could get a shooter and someone to play PG at UCONN with Mahaney. That was not something Brea could of done. Neither was a good fit but I rather have Brea's shooting.

Per Storrs Central, we were recruiting both to get both, because we needed a ball handler and it's always nice to have more shooting in our offense. Their visits were close, but they were not related recruitments. They got Mahaney, because the hope was he could play PG/combo guard. They gauged the locker room and adding a wing shooter would make it tough to retain players we cared about so they passed on Brea.

The problem was mis-evaluating Mahaney, it has nothing to do with Brea, who we never would have added. If we didn't get Mahaney, we would have gone after a different ball handler/combo guard. We weren't going into the season with only Diarra and Nowell who could initiate offense.
