Memphis losing at home to UAB, no way penny survives this season
It's too bad. Penny and Grant Hill were my favorite NBA players in the mid 1990s and if it weren't for career debilitating injuries like the knee injury and ankle injury, respectively, they would have been NBA icons. LIke Shaq said in the 30 for 30 special on the Orlando Magic on ESPN, "Shaq and Penny was Shaq and Kobe before Shaq and Kobe".

Having said all of that, Penny is a terrible coach and had no experience coaching college basketball, as a head coach or an assistant, before becoming head coach of Memphis. His prior experience was being a head coach of a Memphis high school team for a few years. Because of that prior experience and his ties in the community of Memphis and his ability, or perceived ability to recruit, he got the Memphis Tigers coaching job. I don't mind that he got an opportunity for this job, but he has been there for 8 years and has not done nearly enough. It's time for him to go just like it was time for Patrick Ewing to go.

When is the last time an NBA star became a good head coach? With coaching you need a repeatable system focused on the details, multi faceted.

Great players don’t become great coaches because the game comes so naturally and easily to them that they can’t teach the game. They never have the learn the little things that average and below have to learn to carve out a career

Larry was a great coach because despite having amazing natural talent he worked on those little things

OSU was down 10 like a minute ago. Now dow 3 to MSU. 14 ticks left

Coach K was hateable but I did respect him to a degree. And the way he went out losing 2x to UNC during his farewell tour really tied a bow on his career.

Scheyer has won nothing and cries every time his team loses. He's also leading the charge to end court storming which is one of the best parts of cbb. IMO just as hateable as K

MSU is a program who seems to consistently pull together S16 type teams with no ceiling beyond that. They should always be ecstatic if they make an Elite 8. Not one portal kid in the starting 5. If Izzo had gone out and supplement Fears & Carr with a really good outside shooter and one good athlete in their front court, they could be a good team.

Izzo has taken Michigan State to 8 final fours.

Two since 2010. None since 2019. Game has changed a LOT since then. He got to an Elite 8 last year - my guess is he never gets beyond that again until he retires. Great coach, stubborn. All it took was 1-2 portal splashes for this team to be a contender.

Anyone that contexts what anyone did prior to 2022 or so - it's not relevant anymore.

Why do you constantly do this?

Did you not start a discussion around Izzo? The whole point is that someone that stubbornly doesn't use the portal has limited upside. So a F4 in 2019 isn't all that relevant today.

I think the question relates to you constantly making predictions that have become a bigger curse than the Madden cover

lol - hot takes. I would be surprised if Izzo made another F4.

I replied to your post correcting you.

You make these declarative statements over and over and they're almost always inaccurate. When someone responds correcting the record you always change the goalposts.

I didn't say he didn't win past F4's. Sorry if I didn't elaborate that I meant today and not historically. Point was not using the portal has it's limitations.
