What is Few's secret sauce to work the metrics. A - he does all his damage in Nov/Dec. This is usually where teams with young or new talent take some time to get things going. Right now he seems to recruiting a lot of old international kids, and he does roll back a lot of players as his kids are just under the NBA cut. So he always has an advantage early season. While he doesn't run from anyone, he also seems to get a lot of very good teams, but not great. He has smart scheduling strategy for the types of teams he pulls together.

His secret sauce:
Good coach + good players = winning a lot of games by more points than most teams would win them.

Kelvin Sampson bemoans Houston NIL budget: 'We're poor'

"We have a very poor athletic department," he said. "We're poor. We were poor when I got here, and we're still poor.
"We probably have the lowest budget of anybody in Power 4. The way our recruiting is going, we have to stop at some point because we don't have the money to keep bringing in many good players. And that's not easy for us to do."

UM up 76-36

Some of these blowouts we are seeing this year seem all time OOC. It really is getting to a point where if you aren't watching top 15 teams play each other, there is little point in watching. There is a crystal clear delineation between teams that have a chance and don't at all this year. There are a couple of strays out there with talented players, like Arkansas & UNC, but totally incomplete.

Cincinnati sucks.

I wish they didn't, I like when they're good. They just aren't though.

I don’t really care about Cincinnati. But speaking of them, I was thinking the other day about how great it would be if Mick Cronin could get out of UCLA and take the Providence job when English gets fired. Providence is way more invested in bball and had great NIL this year. He’s a great fit for Providence because I honestly can’t believe he’s gone his whole career without tossing a full beer on the court from the coaches box.

Sharing an interesting fact. This is CBB discussion board, no? They are a fun team. I don’t know why there is this sprint to defend UConn when there is zero attack on them. It’s weird, albeit not uncommon.
Ruff Ruff’s team du jour……whoever is hot is who he is on. Has he even mentioned the dreaded M word since December????

That's unpossible. All their problems went away with Mick.

Providence is more invested in basketball success than literally UCLA?
If you say so

I don’t know. They’re in a conference where they are a geographic oddity. Their home attendance sucks unless it’s some name brand opponent. Mick always complains about their NIL (granted he complains about everything). I know Providence has good NIL. Every home game was a sellout at the level Cooley had them. If Mick was coaching this Providence roster they’d probably be on track to make the tournament.

Didn't Mick take UCLA to the final four in the not too distant past?

If being on track to make the tournament is where you set the bar, you aren't grabbing a coach from a school like UCLA unless it's a move similar to when UMass grabbed Lappas from Villanova.

Some big games on Saturday, especially in the Big XII.

He had the 2 seed in 2023. He hasn't been trending well the last couple, but I'm not leaving UCLA for PC.

If they can't get Schertz they should talk to Mick. He clearly hates it at UCLA. Hates being an outlier in a Midwest conference and more than anything he hates not having a fanbase.

UCLA will always be a name but the job pretty much sucks.

I know Providence has a fan base and spends money, but it's just hard to believe they could get someone established when there are also "University of Some Big State" jobs in the world. There's a reason they ended up with a mediocre George Mason guy last time

They're not getting a brand name coach.

Cooley came from Fairfield. Keno Davis from Drake. Why would Josh Schertz go there?

They might get someone on the way down, the way New Mexico constantly snags former P4 coaches who flame out

Lots of talk about how great the Big 10 and Big 12 are, but then you have Michigan State and BYU losing to unranked teams. I don’t care what conference you’re in, if your power teams can’t take care of the unranked teams in their conference it just shows the reality that those conferences maybe aren’t as good as their numbers. The Big 10 hasn’t won squat in this century, but they always seem to find a way to put 8-9 teams in the tournament only to flame out. Michigan and Illinois look legit to me, but I’m not sold on the rest of that league to be honest.

I meant Cronin

If he's going to take a step up he can aim higher than Providence. You think he wouldn't be in demand?
I think he would be in demand. You asked why he would go there? I gave you some reasons why.

I'm not sure which P4 jobs open up, but I'm considering any before PC. Oregon? Altman seems like he's done. I can't think of too many high end P4 jobs that will be open this cycle. Maybe UNC, and then whatever school the outgoing coach leaves. Cuse?

It's going to be interesting to see if Oats leaves - he has such a unique style, not sure a UNC wants it the run & gun stuff.

I view this as dead wrong. Intraconference games tell you nothing about the strength of the conference, as any performance good for one team is equally bad for its opponent. You can only judge conferences by interleague play, modified by the eye test trying to discern if one conference has more than its share of teams who have materially improved from December.
