February 2020 UConn Recruiting Thread

She wasn't simply towering over people though. She was hitting short jumpers, using the glass like Tim Duncan--kinda reminds me of a female Duncan--and finishing plays with little space to operate.

I'm not saying one way or another but a lot of posts scored easily in HS and got those shots either blocked or slapped out of their hands in college. I'm continually surprised by how many of ONO's shots get blocked. I did see Iriafen use her left hand nicely but didn't watch even half the game so I'll take your word. Nothing against her but she looks like another slender post ala ONO/DeBerry. I'm waiting for a Brown/Cox/Boston/Dolson type who can create their own space, set wide screens and deny others of that type from backing them down like Shaq. And yeah, I'm greedy. ;)

One of Kiki Iriafen's turnaround jumpers off the window:

I froze this at the point where she was releasing that shot. She used her right hand when if she used her left she could have used her right to screen the defender. But it didn't matter there because although she only rose about 8-10 inches off the court her waist was even with her defender's shoulders. That shot would have been blocked by an elite post in college.
But I do like how she moves and uses her feet.

In an aside, from their logo I would guess that Huntington Beach teams are the Oilers. I wonder how many protests that has led to in environmentally-conscious California?

I've never quite understood Minnesota's reasoning behind both denying these kids the opportunity to distinguish themselves on a national stage, and the chance to promote Minnesota basketball. It's beyond my ken.

I think a lot of it has to do with keeping the ultra competitive HS hockey in Minnesota "fair". The catholic school/prep school teams that were better funded would go out and play in like 10 national tournaments every year, and thus are viewed as having an advantage over the other public schools that cannot afford to send their teams. I don't agree with it, but I think this is the reasoning behind it.

Yeah silly.

2/16

Azzi Fudd scored 20 points today including this late three:

Initially, I thought that SJC must have lost, if Azzi scored only 20 against a very strong McNamara team. But the scoreboard and players’ reaction, suggests that trey was the game winner. FYI, that was HG #13 in 2020, Madison Scott, guarding her. Congrats to Azzi and SJC!

It takes serious strength and mechanics to bury an NBA 3 with so little body motion. Tremendous shooter.
Two years in a row, she beat the HS girls AND HS boys and lost only to Steph Curry in the 3-point contest. Azzi’s shot is as good as it gets.

St. John's won 68-62. That three was essentially the dagger.

I do know that.
Defense won today's game vs USF .. Aubrey, Liv & Danger .. we should prioritise defense & rebounding for next year: Liv, Aubrey, Mir, Paige & Aaliyah are my starters! that's eggzackly how the Celtics won all those titles, isn't that so?

I don't think I have seen a wcb player that can shoot the 3 with as little effort as Fudd. Just so smooth. A lot of coaches are going to scream/cry when she commits somewhere.

While your 3/4 press lineup may be short on shooters, if they can generate TO's they can score in transition. Not as a primary lineup but against the right opponent they can be a majorly disruptive force for 5 minutes of play a couple of times a game. And if Bueckers, whose quickness and length fits a pressing style, is passing to them their effectiveness is enhanced.

I'm thinking more than five minutes .. when you say short on shooters, who did you have in mind?

Yes defense won today. That's what the good teams can do - they can win differently. How much you want to bet -- just kidding "bet" not meant to to be money or any value just a phrase Im saying-- that this lineup you believe in has even a prayer of happening? ANd I can tell you if you are thinking of "Bill Russell basketball" and trying to apply it to today's game - for the most part the game has passed you by. By a lot. :)

Kids want no part of your brand of basketball. Boring basketball in the 50-s low 60's. You own't win long-term. UCONN has a streak of final fours-- because it is part Geno and part talent. Read that "Generation thread" in which the poster cbaarj is saying Taurasi came to UCONN because she thought they played like "Showtime Lakers."

Those superstars don't want to play your brand of boring archaic basketball trying to win 55-52. You've got one ball-handler in your lineup. None are proven 3pt shooters. All you are thinking of is defense with no respect to shooting or passing. Remember when you said Liv was a good shooter when I mentioned she can't even hit ft's - she was just hitting 62% at the time. well now it's 53%.

I recommend if you have any friends that can reach out to a Div 1 coach and ask them if they think overall a 62% now 53% ft shooter is a good shooter - and they will all say absolutely NOT. None of these players are passers either other than Paige and the team is loaded with 3 frosh and 1 soph and 1 jr. You're enamored with athleticism and assume the athlete can easily shoot and pass. Well I refrain from talking about this further on this thread other than hope one signing we get is Fudd. I love fastbreak basketball and am thankful Geno would never put that lineup you suggest next year. You aren't getting the top recruits with your brand of basketball. And you won't be able to score consistently.

Players who have shown an ability to hit from the arc against decent college teams.

You made a good point. I can envision Liv morphing into the 'Bill Russell' of WBB for next season. She has all the tools. And if we surround her with other defensive specialists - Aubrey, Mir, Paige & Aaliyah - we can generate terrific offense via steals, in transition and by pounding the glass. Unstoppable!
We should do this because we've already proven that we don't have any offensive stars on our roster, at least not in the big games. When John Wooden adopted this defensive philosophy at UCLA they were successful and exciting!

Nothing I agree with you on here. Nothing. You're just a fan of old style basketball that I'm glad Geno has done away with a long time ago. But you can keep hoping but imo nothing you're saying is what any Div 1 coach would do. Have a good night! :)

This lineup in their frosh year would never work only vs the worst of teams. Years ago Dean SMith used to put in a complete new 2nd team for a stretch and one year he was playing Indiana and Knight's team crushed the 2nd unit for however long Smith kept them in which cost NC the game. I think he stopped it shortly thereafter.

There is no way vs a decent team unless it's a blowout you would risk putting that lineup in with 3 frosh, 1 soph and 1 jr. There is an assumption "you would steal the ball." But when you press you can also get whooped by good passing teams with good guard play. There is no way you are going to keep your better players like Walker, CW AM and Westbrook all on the bench and risk this type of pressing team that would have a horrendous halfcourt set.

This lineup completely disregards fundamental offensive basketball and even what a triple threat is. You have one player on the team as a triple threat as of right now. SO Geno is going to cash in his offensive flow coaching style that he pushes so much and instead throw all of his chips in on 5 minutes of a predominant freshmen / soph pressing lineup?

You think Geno is just going to give up his attempt to have his team run an offensive flow - and play his lesser talented players so he can press? This is a proposal that someone would make (not just jingo) who has over-inflated view of defense vs minimal respect for offense. Walker was just projected a few weeks ago if she left to be 8th in the draft. Westbrook was a good player. Anna has outplayed AUbrey overall. Cwill's frosh year was superior to Aubrey's this year. All this is going to be dumped for 5 minutes of pressure rather than continually work on offensive flow? It won't happen.

Geno is looking for offensive flow. This lineup breaks the flow. Secondly, you aren't going to risk a game with most of your stars on the bench. Third, Kiss Azzii fudd and any terrific high school scorer's future commits goodbye with something like this. They'll say "If Geno isn;t going to stick with me - then I'm not going to risk going there and play behind someone that I know I'm better than." You can't use these South Florida games as a barometer and think a lineup with such limited offensive skill is going to work vs the better teams with good guards. Very good guard play should overall defeat an aggressive press. And I'm thankful Geno believes in 3pt shooting. This lineup would be extremely limited. There is no reason to intentionally limit the lineup.

Celts won most of their titles with Bill Russell controlling the bucket and KC Jones a shut down guard. This was before the 3 pointer so while I would love to see a dominate center, the game has evolved to players like Stewie who do it all. Even MoJeff, one of the most dominate defensive guards ever, could score consistently. Once Paige was doubled, who would score on your team?

By the way, while I disagreed with your ideas on next year's starters, I enjoyed the post. Creative thoughts like these make this one of the better sports blogs out there.
