FAU Post Game Thread

Wonder if Mora would prefer a bowl later in the year to get more practice in or an earlier bowl so that he can hit the portal hard.
This year’s portal success will be as critical as it’s ever been.

Trying to get players to come here should be easier than in years past.

A few players being recognized in selection for national players of the year, beating a few ACC teams and us receiving a vote for Top 25 - a few players projected to be drafted in NFL late rounds except for Sky who could go earlier.

You’ve got to think this is going to help Mora and his team out there on the recruiting trail.

Calling Brock a superstar after last year is bit of a stretch. I mean, we gave up 42 points to UMass . We were just used to having putrid defenses that seeing an average one seemed like a miracle.

Yes, we lost a lot of talent from last year's defense and yes, we missed a bunch with the transfer class (which Brock should bear some of the blame as I doubt he didn't have any say in who we recruited), but there's an overall scheme issue here. To play the 3-3-5 and be successful, you need top of the line talent. Newsflash, we are never going to get 11 of those at UConn. It's much easier to hide the deficiencies on our defense when we play a more traditional scheme, instead we are asking them to do things they are not very good at.

Continuing to use the 3-3-5 severely limits the ceiling on our team, and if we want to continue the upwards trajectory of our program, that is a valid discussion to have, so spare me your puritan "true UConn fan" bs
You’re making this into an “either or” and it’s not. There absolutely was a step back in the talent of the defensive unit this year, and in addition to that mistakes were made, like on their last TD, or the score we gave up at the end of the first half of the BC game, that were less about physical talent and not having someone in the right place at the right time, which is about coaching.

I have to agree. There is some Xs and Os in all of this.

I would point to the 4th down play FAU made from their own 10 yard line yesterday.

How it possible to give up a 5 yard slant pass for 90 yards?

I think this might be a first time this has happened on a 4th down from a team’s own 10 yard line, LOL!

That alone should put you on the hot seat!

There used to be a meme floating around this board of a South Park character at a computer desk after watching some online smut. Part of me thinks you were in a similar situation when the game ended yesterday.
Not really. At a Jeff Dunham Show in Kissimmee with my wife & her uncle. Still checkin' score and sweatin' end of game.

How is it possible? I call you attention to Exhibit A: Rutgers game in '09. 37 seconds and UC snatched defeat out of mouths of victory. So it's been done.

Matt Brock has to go. Almost ruined an all time performance from Fangnano. Career defining drive for him. He will be remembered very fondly
In the slightest of defense of the DC-I think this new reality of annual roster building through the portal bit us-it seems like every DL transfer we brought in has underperformed relative to expectations and has generally appeared to be physically overmatched this season. You cannot be successful if the entire DL is getting overmatched. I think that might possibly play a role in why we have a lot of sacks this year-blitzing out of necessity rather than solely when you would ideally want to? We also see the physicality issue throughout the team with so many missed tackles. Tackling isn’t rocket science so no DC has the “keys to the castle” on tackling secrets-i think the huge number of missed tackles might say more about overall team physicality than any preparation or scheme issues.

I think when playing teams that aren’t as physical, his defense has had some successful stints.

Don’t get me wrong-Im not losing ANY sleep if they replace him, but I think the available players on defense are a contributing factor to our struggles on that side of the ball.

Oh he'll hit the portal hard sure enough, just it might not be for us...that Stanford job is looking like a guillotine to our ascension from mediocrity. So maybe he prefers an earlier bowl to focus on other things. Like I wrote in another post, I'm waiting for the sky to fill with ash and fire.

You got me there, LOL that was 15 years ago…. I wonder how that Rutgers D coach diid in the years to come?

That last defensive sequence where FAU gained like 60 yards in 25 seconds might be enough to fire Brock for cause.

Might be the PTSD, but I don't think a 3-3-5 defensive scheme can be successful if you don't have 5 stars across the board.
That was such a brutal thing to watch unfold! I agree that you need to be STOUT up front to have a 3-man front.

Everytime I open this thread I have to go back to check the score of the game again. The fanbase has evolved (devolved?) - we just finished a season 9-3 w/ a win on the road.

Years ago this group would be celebrating if they got a win via opposing team forfeit due to food poisoning. Back to back 9 win seasons. Could it have been prettier at times during the season - absafukinglutely but man, look where we came from.

It’s college football and against formidable odds - UConn is relevant again! Enjoy it.

I’m going to defend Brock a little here:

There is nothing inherently wrong with running a 3-3-5 as your base defense. If there was, Jim Mora would not be running it.

My biggest fear going in was replacing all that talent on D. We had a nice mix of guys who had developed here and some really nice additions in the portal. Hard to duplicate seeing that so many guys don’t turn out to be what you hoped.

Lastly think of what fans of teams we’ve played said about their DC after getting smoked by UConn and it’s unrecruited Maine QB.

Looking forward to a good bowl game

Just because inquiring minds want to know, with your wife and her uncle or with your wife and her “uncle?”

Just kidding.

THISSS!!!!

And for the record, I would STILL take a victory due to opponent food poisoning...

I agree 100% with your assessment.

FIU actually won today, they're currently at 6-5. Going up against 2-9 Sam Houston next week, so good chance they get to 7 wins before bowl season. That will make 2, lol.
People continue this weak schedule foolishness. But look around. James Madison won 10 games in CUSA. Lost their only P4 game. Note they played one! Snuck by a dreadful Washinton State

I guess it's human nature that some expect perfection and can't fully stomach the wonderful offensive display our stars have given us just because the hole-y defense isn't up to snuff.

Have you watched college football before? I know you have, lol.

There is always room for improvement but I'm thrilled to fill my belly with a lot of touchdowns.
We'll be forever talking about Fagnano, Bell and Edwards. Comparing incomers to them. The highest praise.

And right now Tulane is expected to get into the CFP. Rightfully so since Tulane’s schedule was much harder than James Madison. Easily beat Duke and Northwestern. Lost to OL Miss a top 10 team.

Good point, beat Ga State(1-10 Sunbelt) 14-7 KILLED EM!
