My favorite Diana words came in the NCAA Championship Game- 2003- Tennessee.
The late Tasha Butts was guarding Diana very physically in the post- (pushing, grabbing), and so, Diana swung out to the side line, inches in front of the great coach, Pat Summit. Diana took the pass from Maria Conlin and swished the 3. And coming back up the Court, the enraged Taurasi brandished her fist to the crowd and shouted.... #$%^^* &&TE% #@$%%!!!!! . Translated from the Italian, I think she said “in your face”— or- words to that affect. I had never seen that type of reaction in college basketball. That competitive fire set her apart.
When someone debates who was the best ever- my reply is simple. Pretend we’re starting a new league and you can draft any female who ever played. I tell them they can have 1st pick- but if they pick any one other than Diana-I’m drafting her, and I’ll beat them most of the time.
In the Tenn game, Diana said hold me, beat me, foul me— doesn’t matter- you can’t stop me! And so it was- in her own words. The best ever!
