Evan Miya Preseason Ranking

The Purdue hype is pretty crazy. Everywhere they are a top 3 school, usually #1. We saw how this team played 2 years ago with the same roster minus Edey. Yes they’re 2 years older, but again they don’t have Edey. I just don’t get the Braden Smith hype, at least not consensus preseason NPOY. Kaufman Renn had a really good year last year, but I just think there’s some regression there. Loyer is Loyer. And Kluff is a good addition to round out the roster, but can he hold up when he’s not consistently playing against centers that are 6 inches shorter than him?

Lastly, Omer Mayer hype is off the charts, I guess because he’s international and that shiny mystery people can fantasize about. He’ll be good, I just don’t think a huge impact player year 1.

I think they’ll be top of the polls throughout the season because they’re playing in the annually overrated Big 10 and also have a relatively easy non-conference. But I could easily see this team getting bounced in the elite 8, if not earlier.

If I thought much of Painter as a coach, I could see it, but I don't. Obviously they got punked as a 1 seed, and that demonstrated how little strategy that team had other than Edey. The next year, they still had only 1 plan....play edey 37 minutes a game or whatever. Which worked fine until they ran into a team that focused on perimeter defense...and they had no answer when edey inevitably tired out. (and before someone argues, edey got something like 17 points in garbage time after the initial spurt in the first 8 minutes or so)

Anyway, point is, i'm not convinced Painter is more than a one hit wonder....and i'm not convinced he got as much as he should have out of the edey teams....and i'm not convinced he's going to get the best out of these teams either.

You don't get the Braden Smith NPOY hype? He was the Big Ten Player of the Year and a consensus 1st Team All American and he returned to school. That's the kind of guy that always gets picked for pre-season POTY. Plus, the all-time NCAA assists record is within his reach if he averages the same number of assists as last year and plays a few games into the NCAA tournament. If he sets the record and Purdue is a top 1 or 2 seed, he'll win the award.

No reason given why Kaufman Renn would get a year older and regress. Loyer is one of the best shooters in the country. Mayer will add an element of dynamism to their offense. Jacobsen is back from injury and will add the rim protection they lacked last season. Cluff is an awesome rebounder (which translates well up levels), they don't need him to be a star.

Painter has finished in the KenPom top 25 for 10 straight years. The top 10 five times in that stretch. He's the exact opposite of a one hit wonder.

It’s hard to find 3 better rosters on paper than the one with the best offensive player in the country, and a 20 ppg post scorer. Before even getting to the reliability of Loyer and Cluff and the other good talents on the roster. Purdue has been consistently really good for awhile now, including before Edey. I

and has made it out of the sweet 16 exactly twice in those 10 years. He is the posterchild for a coach who can get some decent recruits, but can't actually coach them to their potential.

I still feel the same way about Purdue as I did in a thread a few months ago - "Not high on Purdue. I'm probably just a hater considering they were good last year, but Smith/Renn/Loyer don't move me as the core of your team with Braden as the guy. Yeah they made the S16 but got a lucky 2nd round matchup to get there". The scout that has killed Braden in March for 3 straight years still applies: he's 6'0 and small, play physical defense and you can take him out of the game

Michigan is tough - they're bringing a lot of guys in so they should be really good. I'm sure Yaxel being Evan's #2 player (which is...interesting) is what puts them there. But I think UConn should be 1-2 spots higher considering those two teams

No St Johns??
