Epic QB Competition

Hopefully between Boyle and Lagow. Thinking Whitmer starts this year but may not end it. He has no upside, but most experienced to start the year.

I am loving this. CW, CC, TB, RL. Just cant wait to see how this all plays out over the next couple years.

How good would it be to have Oriaki down low on this year's guards only Husky hoops team. Whine all you want as long as you could get done what Giffey, Wolfe et al have not been able to do.
I think not. Exhibit 1 - last years performance. Exhibit 2 - AO's performance this year (very up and down although he did have very good stats in a recent game.) I'll keep the guys we've got. Better team cohension has giving us some very good games this year.

You are saying a RS Jr 21 yrs old has 'no upside'? that is kinda crazy. He had some really positive games last year despite an offensive offensive line. Stood in their and took shots and made plays.

we are talking about strait up true freshman here regardless of their ability. what, less than 5% end up starting their freshman year?

AO just needed to be a solid, around the backboard player like in '11. Much better than anyone UConn has underneath except maybe TO. As for last season, he pouted after needlessly being pushed aside for Drummond (who in his one season did very little) and not developing further. This was going to be a waste (transferring for just one season). Staying would have been a win, win.

How did Drummond do "very little"? He averaged like 10 pts and 8 rebounds a game.

He alienated several of the returning UConn players last season before his transfer. Would things have changed between them and AO this season. Possibly. But not definitely. And this years crop is playing ahead of their collective level because of the chips on their shoulder. AO was always a pouter so who knows if that attitude would have cropped up this season and negated any positive impact he would bring with rebounding. The numbers this season for Mizzou are similar to last season with a better physical line up to mask his shortcomings. I'm with Cl82 on this.

I think Whitmer has NOTHING BUT upside. He played very well in the second half of the year, especially against Louisville and Pitt. Had 1 Int against Pitt and Cincy. None against either Louisville or Temple. The 5 or so against Cuse distorted things a bit.

I thought that he was a much better QB the second half with room to improve.

I think that CW has some upside, but that upside is more due to Weist being the OC. Too often IMO, CW was jeckle and hide, you didn't know who would show up, he was very inconsistent. It would not surprise me to see CW win the starting job, he has a leg up on the competition, but at the same time it would not surprise me to see another QB overtake him in the season.

From a fans perspective, this is a good problem to have. From CW's perspective, he's going to be looking over his shoulder all season.

I agree with this. He adapted to the higher level of play. And lets not forget he was constantly running for his life, too. With even modest line play I think he improves, too. On the 3 guys coming in, I think its pretty certain that all 3 will redshirt. The coaches aren't going to say so probably, at least not yet, But I think that's the likely outcome. I'm still of the opinion that Cochran is odd man out in this deal. You read all the stuff Pasquoloni and company say about looking for prototype guys, you look at 6-5, 6-4, 6-5 incoming recruits and you look at Whitmer being the starter, and then you read interviews with Day and Weist and his name never comes up. I think he was a stopgap type of recruit last year when we couldn't land the guys we wanted for the position and he's out of place. Could be wrong but I just think all the data suggests he is not on the long term plan.

the issue is i dont think im going to get any unbias reports from summer ball. i can already tell whats coming. whitmer looks good, mccuming is really a great ath hes the sleeper. casey is clearly the future. lagow looks good and wow boyle has huge potential...

..sounds like every one of Dez's off season work out observations

The past two years we have had to live with a ridiculous number of interceptions. What the past two classes have done is relieve us of that responsibility.

I see CW holding onto the job going into this year but, it's on him to produce. No QB is staying the field from here on out if he can't protect the football. Any or all CC, RL or TB will pass him quickly. It could happen earlier.

I doubt PP will name a starter until after fall practice.

Subbabub, I think Whitmer is the starter in April, and he's the starter in the opening game. No chance on this planet that any of the true freshmen are ready to take over this year, I don't care what the coaches say. Only way one of them sees the field this season is as a result of multiple injuries. If you think maybe next season someone might take the job, I can buy that. But UConn isn't starting a true freshman unless disaster hits. As to Cochran, I've given my opinion on him.

if these kids aren't at least as good as CW then none of them are worth the hype.. and maybe that's a bit harsh, but, you get my point... I'm anxious to see how this all play out. i cant remember a time when going into a season with this much potential at the QB spot. there should be at least one competent QB out of the 3, and another thing i would not b surprised if KT makes a push. in his highlight tapes he kind of reminds me of Teddy Bridgewater a lil.. anyway should be interesting

I think that's true unless CW hasn't cut down on his turnovers. We didn't have an another option last year, or the year before. If CC is going to be a player, he should be able to unseat a JR QB should he throw too many picks.

I agree that we won't here a lot of definitive answers from the practices. That's the way it should be. What's the point of having competition if it's decided before it starts and all the fans are informed of the results. That's not likely to happen. So the best we will get are snippets from the coaches and reactions from what the reporters have seen. That won't tell the true story unless someone is head and shoulders above the rest. It's not likely that a true freshman would start in the beginning of the season, but it remains to be seen how they match up with the veteran players. If one or two of them came in knowing the playbook (unlikely), able to make all the throws accurately, able to see and find the open receivers not just the primary target, able to avoid the rush, able to avoid the interceptions due to ball placement and showed that they did these at a higher rate than the veterans, they could win a spot on the depth chart. Although the goal would be to red-shirt these guys the staff need to evaluate exactly what they have and who gives us the best chance to win. I don't feel that what we had last season will in any way be acceptable, even though in many games I thought Chandler was our best offensive player. I feel that with Weist in charge of the offense, Day in charge of the QBs and Buggs in charge of the RBs we will get a 'fresh' evaluation of the players. I don't think much of this evaluation will be shared with us fans but as long as the correct pieces are put in place for us to be successful I'll be OK with that. Let the games begin!

CW looked like a D1 QB the last 4 games. Give him more time and he will develop. I don't know what everybody expected? Take a kid out of CC and throw him in to a D1 setting with no protection and no running game.

I think he ran the team quite well by the end of the year. Let's see what happens. I expect a challenge by CC and I hope it gets pushed all summer.

I don't get the criticism of Whitmer. GDL had him running for his life and they were still calling for seven step drops. It was the height of our program's stupidity.

I don't think anyone on the roster would have done better in the same circumstances.

Turnovers were his only real weakness. If he protects the ball, the others will have a hard time unseating him.

Those turnover were often a direct result of him running for his life. How many times does this need to be explained?

The most popular player on the team is the back up QB. If the starter is viewed as mediocre, no matter the reason, a certain segment of the fanbase thinks someone can do it better.

Whitmer will probably be the starter going into Spring, coming out of the Spring, going into August and vs. Towson. He would have to really take a giant steaming heater at mid-field in order for it not to happen.

He should be head and shoulders above everyone else at this point if he is actually progressing. He's no longer a first year QB.

He's not running the 1972 Miami Dolphins play book anymore either. Hopefully, Coach Weist will actually design his plays to advantage of is players' strengths.

I don't think this is going to be much of a QB competition for the starting spot. The battle will be for #2 and #3.

CW was ok last year, but he wasn't great (OL play notwithstanding). Need to cut down on the INT's. He had way too many to completely pin on the OL or WR's.

I've been a CW defender since he's been been here but, if he can't take a sack or better yet throw the ball away, even when running for his life, one of the three Fr will take his job.

I thought it a fairly obvious point, but i guess I was wrong.

Cochran will get the first crack IF Whitmer is demoted on his own accord (Don't see it happening early). I think the coaches will do all they can to red shirt the 3 frosh.
