Not in the top 40.
Katz should not assume UConn will lose a lot of players, because if you read the write-ups, he's looking at teams as constituted, including players who haven't declared their intentions to leave early.
With Drummond back, I think they have a top 25 team. I expect huge improvement from AD, Napier and Boatright, not to mention Daniels. If Lamb and Drummond are back, I expect this team to be top 10.
Now, here's hoping that it will all matter in the end.

Any time before the season starts is way too early to put rankings out. Before the draft comes and goes, the conversation is completely irrelevant and any arguments are basically unfounded.

It's because people have it in their minds that the entire team is leaving. They aren't.

I agree that Drummond is the x-factor, assuming Lamb and Oriakhi are gone. If we lose Lamb, it sounds like there may be mutual interest for RJ Evans to come on board for a year. Napier, Boatright, Evans, Calhoun, Giffey, and Daniels is not a bad stable of perimeter players at all. But Drummond's the key because he would at least give us a three man rotation of capable guys at the 4-5 spot.

With Drummond (and no surprise transfers) we are a preseason top-15 team.
 
I guess we should just have more UK and Calpari threads than.

I thought this site was talk about UConn? Or is it to talk about commercials and announcers we do not like and UK.

Yeah, I didnt understand that either. Every other team he talks about if this guys stays but with us nothing like that.
 
Without AD and JL back this is a sub 500 team.

We have two undersized guards who have to get most of our points, no center and no other scoring threat that is proven.

Unless we get a spring signee who is a star and can put the ball in the hole.

Going to be a tough year I'm afraid.

even if ao/jl/ad all leave, boat/bazz/omar is a top 15 guard combo in the nation. if we land no more recruits(which would be crazy considering there would then be spots open) this team is still a .500 team easy. i expect roscoe to improve and hit the weight more but everyone forgets about dd. kid is a stud in the making but this year got lost in the madness of this season. we went from looking to develop him early(he was scoring and playing well) to trying to fix this mess all season and he got lost on the ench becuas eof it. hes stick thin. a year putting on weight will do wonders for his game. he clearly can shoot and drive. a little mass will make him a tough guy to guard. he will be a key piece for us next year. as it sits now, i'm not afraid to hit the seaosn with a 8 man of boat/bazz/omar/gif/dd/scoe/to/brad. not afriad at all. is that a top 20 team? no prob not, but that crew will do just fine. we would just be real small and thin down low, nothing wrong with that if u can play to your strenghts. these guys will be heard from next year.

I think sub .500 is harsh, in the BE maybe, but overall no.

The main issue is the scoring though, without AD and Lamb we really are going to have an issue putting up points, after Bazz and Boat the scoring options are minimal.

I hope I am wrong but I do not have high expectations for DD, I know players can improve, some dramatically, but there was nothing I saw from DD this year to think he will be someone we can rely on next year.

Next season depends on whether Drummond comes back, in my opinion. There is no reason Drummond can't at the very least be what Oriakhi was in his sophmore season if he returns.

Assuming nothing completely unexpected happens, we know we have a junior PG, which, in itself, bodes well for the team, especially because Bazz has been through all the wars at this point in his career. People forget how good Bazz was at times last year. I think he's very similar to a junior/senior AJ Price.

The unfortunate part about the way this team is madeup is that our two best players seem to both be undersized PG's. Boatright has all the makings of a great college player who can score in a variety of ways. I just worry him and Bazz both need the ball in their hands a lot. However, if they can work it out, that could be a lethal backcourt on offense and most teams won't be able to take advantage of it defensively.

Roscoe Smith will likely return to his more comfortable position at the power forward spot, even if he thinks he's a small forward. There he can set screens, grab some boards, and play lockdown defense like he did during his freshman year. If he can become more consistent with his jump shot and learn to stop knocking people over whenever he dribbles, he'll be an excellent player.

Deandre and Giffey are both question marks. I definitely think they can contribute, but neither showed us much this season.

My final verdict is that we're top 10 if Drummond returns and top 3 if Drummond and Lamb both return. If neither return, probably top 30ish. Don't kid yourself. This is still a very talented team. Last year youth did them in.

But realistically, it will happen.

I don't know about the team, but this thread has the potential to be top 10.

If Drummond comes back we should expect to be very good. Its a new year and thats more than enough talent to be players on the national scene. Hell, if Drummond comes back it should be with the goal of becoming the best player in the country. Think about how much Okafor and Thabeet improved after a year--Drummond came in a lot younger than both of them, and his freshman year compares favorably with those two

I have no idea as to how competitive we'll be, but I have a hunch that the team's chemistry will be a lot better. Add no expectations and it could turn into a fun year.

Agree w/4Uconn......If they are out of the tournies with no expectations and playing for next year it will be fun.......they all improve with no pressure and come back as an experienced unit and adding a great class ready to come in and play!! No sulking captains, low expectations but guys hungry for minutes and improving? Throw Bazz, Boat and Omar/Giffey at the 1-2-3 and /GiffeyRoscoe mostly 4, bring TO, Wolfie and Bradley in and maybe a football player we know nothing about who was a real good HS player (never know?) and they will be fun to watch. If they are playing their respective a**es off that will be fun in itself.
 
I don't think people realize how bad you have to be to finish under .500 for a full season. Remember the 06-07 season, where we had all freshman and one sophomore? And we didn't even get invited to the NIT? That team was 17-14. Now way with Shabazz, Boatright, Roscoe, and Omar do we finish under .500 next season.
 
What does it matter how good we are next year if we can't compete in the tournament. As Pitt has figured out time and time again, no one cares what you do in the regular season.
