So how does that help your argument that Hurley can't develop PGs? "MIngo would be too good to be a backup PG and he has the size so we're starting him on the wing in a role where he will facilitate offense and probably run the 2nd unit".

So you aren't worried when you are wrong but lord it over the board when you think you are right. That's beyond annoying.

Newton actually hacked the college PG position under Hurley's tutelage. The man never got rattled, refused to let the team lose their poise when other teams made their run and always seemed to make the right pass. Shot and made 'em when open as well as being perhaps the best backcourt rebounder in the country as a senior. Was he doing all that ECU?

They all developed into elite level decision makers, leaders, and can all make plays in the clutch. Every single one. It’s the inverse of development we’ve seen with Hurley where it’s clear those guys were good because of who was coaching them because all the students were successful.

It’s hard to watch that consistently and excuse what we’ve seen out of all the PGs we bring in from HS and blame it on evaluation. Calhoun turned Craig frickin Austrie into a solid PG here for us from Day 1.

Outside of Ollie (I didn’t watch his time here) you can talk about a big time clutch shot each of those guys made (or was trying to be clutch in Marcus case but the other team hit more shots). It’s just crazy the consistency we saw at the position for almost 20 years.

For as great as T-New was for us, he really wasn't that efficient a scorer. But he was clutch!

I know its annoying to make a post like this and add to it.

But I looked into probably the least favorable person on this list (Marcus Williams) and I had no idea how on fire he was during that 2006 tournament.

He averaged:

8.75 APG
52 FG%
55 3P%
95 FT% (he missed 1 FT in 23 attempts)

I wasn’t aware of how amazing he played and feel even worse that that happened now because he was playing at a truly consistently elite level.

I know it’s hard to defend our HS PG development recently after looking at a list like that. So yeah let’s lock the thread and end the convo lol

Eh it’s not always crazy guesses against the grain.

It could be stuff like saying Cam was going to prove to be a better college player than Hawkins or saying Castle and Clingan were going to be top 5 picks (Clingan should’ve went top 5) before the season even started. And how 2024 was more talented and could be better than 23 (which was blasphemous coming off of the most dominating tournament run ever losing Jackson, Hawkins, and Sanogo).

Could also be things like saying the 2023 team led by Jackson was going to be similar to 2011 when Kemba got his chance to lead (and what do ya know a championship happened).

I’ve been doing this for awhile man and it’s not always some wonky take on how a player is going to breakout. (Even though I did beat that Hawkins and Solo drum as much as I do for Ross).

I’ve never seen a guy pat himself on the back as much as this guy.
He’s the guy with a slightly above average IQ that thinks he’s a genius.
If you had a tiny bit of self awareness your conversations would go so much better in here.

Newton is way better than you give him credit for. Cole was good too. Who cares where they started?

You're still the guy who said Jalen Gaffney would have been just fine as our lead guard if we'd just let him stay in and make mistakes and not worry about being pulled all the time

Much better competition, more assists, less fouls, less TOs, better rebounding, better % at the rim, better offensive rating, better defensive rating, better BPM, more win shares, better PER. Also those.

Numbers earned against inferior competition in lower pressure situations aren't apple-to-apples, imo. Besides, he was a better player in his second year here than he was his first. I'm sure he was a better player in his first year here than his last at ECU as well.
