With just less than four minutes to play and fifth-ranked Duke on a two-on-one fast break, Alyssa Thomas was running back on defense for the No. 7 Maryland women’s basketball team Monday night when Blue Devils guard Chelsea Gray moved in front of the junior forward to shield her from the play.

That's kinda scary and dangerous. Could've been very ugly.

(It's when the score is 57-50.)

Not as notorious as Maryland. Go back and watch the hatchet job their players did to UCONN earlier this year. To equate the way they play to the way Duke play is a joke. I won't go so far as to call Maryland a dirty team, but they were way more hack and grab vs. UCONN than Duke was. So have you watched the games at all? Because we watched UCONN vs. Duke and UCONN vs. Maryland.

in my opinion, Duke crosses the line.

Its not a foul to run in front of someone on the break and slow down. She has no argument. it happens in many fast breaks especially for Uconn.

I believe a moving screen is a foul.

Depends. It's like a charge, if you run in front of someone and don't get set and they crash into you, then it would be a blocking foul.

So is a body slam of Chloe Wells by Hawkins or Thomas. Wells had inside position for a rebound, then the MD player grabbed her from behind, and slammed her to the ground. There were plenty of missed calls both ways, the officials didn't cost MD the game. MD lost because of 24 turnovers, and bad shooting.

She was not setting a screen merely proceeding up court and moving across and slowed down. If any thing the Maryland player pushed her from behind and very well could have been called for it!

She clearly ran in front of her with an attempt to impede progress. But she cut things WAY too close, and it could've been very dangerous. A poor decision.

Saw that and said to wife, "how did they miss that"

Of course it was intentional, and how many times have you seen Bria or Stef or Tina or Sue do the same thing. Come on man!!

Were you one of the refs last night? Wow, I should have been happy that Thomas didn't get called for foul of that play.

There is a big difference between:
(a) slowing down in front of a person
(b) jumping in front a person who's running full speed and stopping

Most players in BB (as well as most other sports) know how to do A effectively without killing themselves or their opponent. What Gray did was very close to B.

Were you watching the game at all? Brenda was complaining about the same Duke's tactics and no call from the get go. this was a build up from the beginning of the game. This is Duke's MO, they are notorious for this type of play.

A Maryland fan complaining about rough and physical play ???

Not complaining about rough and physical play. MD plays a lot of teams that are rough and physical like GT, Miami, Georgetown, UConn. I never complain about those teams unless the fouls called are unbalanced. MD is rough and physical. This complaint is about something else.

I stand corrected. As a former hs official I should know these things.

Actually, I believe it IS in the rules. For instance, from Ohio (High School):
BASKETBALL OFFICIALS-COACHES-SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS
COACHING BOX
In an effort to increase sporting conduct by basketball coaches this year, the OHSAA Board of Control adopted a new bench (Coaching Box) rule which created a 14' box. By now all schools - junior and senior high - should have marked the 14' box with tape or permanent markings.

Team benches shall be located on the scoring table side of the floor. The Coaching box is bounded by the sideline, the team bench, a line at the end of the bench nearest the scorer's table and another line 14' measured back toward the end line. Officials and Head Coaches have been instructed that failure to have a coaching box marked will create a situation where NO coach may stand during the game. School administrators and game site hosts are responsible for complying with this floor marking rule.

COACHING BEHAVIOR
Head Coaches and only Head Coaches are permitted to stand and coach. The Head Coach must remain in the coaching box. When the Head Coach is out of the box and "just coaching" the coaching box rule will be enforced as follows: First Offense - warning and return to box; Next Offense - technical foul.

b. Coaching box. Failure to comply with the rule results in a
distinct advantage that is not within the spirit and intent of the
rules. The rule is clear and concise. The head coach or any other
bench personnel may not be outside the prescribed coaching box
except when otherwise permitted by rule. After a warning, for
the first violation, a technical foul should be assessed for any
subsequent infr

Foul total last night Maryland 15 Duke 14

Maryland had 6 people on the court most of the game

Now that's a classic if I ever heard one. Frese is out of control for most of any close game. She make Geno look like a saint!!!

Close but no cigar. The other player did not even fall down and recovered enough to be involved in the play at the rim. Watch it again she did not stop, not even close. Just slowed down.

Read what I wrote again.

I could agree, but the no call was probably the right call in the flow of that game.
