Too bad.

Baseball lifer. Good manager.

Very likeable guy....

I assume that he finally succumbed to the injuries suffered in the fight with Pedro and that Martinez will soon be charged with his murder.

Don't recall why he did it but loved the pictures of him on Yankees bench in an army helmet....

"Que? Zimmer is dead? Ha ha haaa!"

.-.
RIP, Joe Torre was never the same manager once he left after 03.

One of the great baseball minds in baseball history. It was always my belief that Don Zimmer gave clueless Joe Torre a clue. Perhaps that's a bit harsh, but I agree with Scoe above, it's no coincidence that the last Yankees championship, of the Torre era, was 'o3, the last year Zimmer was with the Yanks. RIP.

That's funny stuff about Torre/Zimm as only a Sox fan could come up with such brilliance!

The Marlins won in '03.

Don Zimmer was hit by a pitch in a minor league game in 1953 and suffered a brain injury. He was unconscious for 13 days. That injury led to MLB adopting the batting helmet. Not sure why the army helmet but I can understand the helmet.

According to everyone on the YES network and Joe Torre himself, Zimmer was an integral part of Torres approach to managing when they were winning WS's.

I think he means championship as in a pennant (winning the ALCS).
So when anyone mentions the 27 Yankee titles, they are referring the pennant?

I was just referencing what 4Uconn said, most people knew what he meant.

is right! The topic is Don Zimmer, not the definition of "championship".

He killed the Red Sox when he demanded trading Bill Lee because Lee called him a gerbil. As Red Sox manager he was a gift for the Yankees.

Zimmer was a pathetic manager. Keeping a guy on the team for the sole purpose of having someone to go to the track with and having to put that washed-up fat bum in the game in the biggest spot of the season still frosts me.

I don't believe anyone dismissed the fact he was an integral part of it after all that's why so many great managers put great baseball minds next to them. My reply to the "clueless Joe Torre" and the attempt to say he was the sole reason and Torre sucked………

the topic was Don Zimmer is DEAD and you found a goddam way to throw Joe Torre under the bus. how can you throw rocks at Scoe?

Great Caesars Ghost! This is the most screwed up thread....ummmmm I was agreeing with Scoe. Let me restate my position for those with reading comprehension ... Don Zimmer made Joe Torre a better manager.
