Coach Joanne P. McCallie talks about the Blue Devils and Mechelle Voepel discusses a program seeking a signature win

Is McCallie ready to face that at Duke? Does Duke have what it takes, as a team and as institution, and do they want to take that position as the hunted, not the hunter, in women’s college basketball? Are the students ready to pack Cameron? Is the administration ready to make UConn-Duke a big time women’s game akin to the Duke men’s games with top-ranked teams?

Especially Don't miss the part with Voepel.

Thanks again - enjoyed that. And I agree with you and Mechelle re coaches and teams embracing the spotlight. Interesting thought though - earlier on, Geno was very good at taking over the spotlight to lessen the pressure/exposure of his teams - the whole Geno/Pat cheese steak debate pre Philly final four and the personality clashes, and specific to Duke and the crazies the 'Duke graduates just work in better restaurants' quip both let his players sidestep some of the glare.

There is a reason why some Top teams do not get over the hump........Coach JPM knows her team lacks that killer instinct against UCONN and now against ND this season....They cannot play 4o minutes and either can KY, TENN, Stanford, MD and so on........Until they do, UCONN will rule WCBB and get the best recruits......I am hoping Duke changes this week coming and makes a statement........What do you think?

Did I really hear him say in the first part of the interview with JPM that the tough schedule to date is going to help Duke prepare for new ACC toughies like Notre Dame and Syracuse? I know they are now ranked but does anyone think they'll be an obstacle to Duke?

Yes. Especially, ND.

Well, as much as I'd like to, I couldn't say Pitt, and Syracuse has beaten Texas and Texas A&M this season, plus they're in a new conference, so teams aren't that familiar with them. Also I like the guards they have. I give them a puncher's chance of taking out a big ACC team at least once.

I put Syracuse in that tier with FSU and GaTech....... fighting for positions 5-7. While I doubt that Syracuse can beat Duke.. I do think they have the kind of team that can make it interesting until about the 10 minute mark of the second half.

Syracuse is much tougher this year, underrated in my view.

If the returnees are well integrated and our team plays anywhere close to its best, then I really don't think the Dukies have much of a chance to even make even a respectable game of it.

I suspect that this game will define the difference between #1 and the rest.

I think Syracuse can play with almost anyone in ACC- not sure about beating Duke. But that great recruiting class is maturing!

So Duke needs to control the tempo of the game, run better than UCONN and shoot better than UCONN and they have a chance to beat the Huskies. Brilliant!

Terrific show and I love MV shes terrific. Thanks D&S for posting. To summarize what I get out of the interviews. There are two types of people in this world. Those who think they can...and those who think they can't and their both right.

Thanks Tony, I appreciate the kind words. You aren't the first person to comment that after listening to coach they don't think Duke has a chance.

I could sit and talk hoops with MV for hours, same thing with the Guru. They have so much knowledge and observation in their brains, that I can barely scratch the surface and be there for a long time!

I watched the Iowa / Syracuse game on TV last week and I thought Iowa beat 'cuse rather handily.
They have a pretty good ball club. Of course last night Bill Fennely and Iowa St took it to their cross state rival pretty good !

Appreciate the podcast. I think you do have to respect the coaches that schedule either over their head or at least games that test you. It is one reason I have always liked Stanford WBB. I'd bet those teams that got blasted by UConn over the HOF tourney will be able to take lessons from it. Good for JPM to have the right attitude. She seems like she is scheduling as many big games as she can to perhaps eliminate their choke gene in big games.

Despite MV's insightful analysis, I think the only two ways I think UConn loses is if they have a brainfart game like they did against St. Johns awhile back or if KML/Tuck plays and it becomes a distraction in the sense that the majority of players are thinking about integrating KML back so much that they lose concentration on the game plan. I am not saying that is going to happen, but I think it is possible. They are not immune from mental lapses from time to time. I don't think it matters much what Duke does. A focused, dialed in Husky team playing its game will defeat anyone in wbb, IMHO.

Crazier things have happened. I mean I gave Louisville zero chance of beating Baylor last year and we saw how that one went.
Baylor last year is not UConn defensively. If Kim had her kids guard the perimeter they would've won. A very poor coaching job by Baylor. With that said UConn is UConn and you cant compare them to any other team in WCBB or any other sport. They completely dominate their opponents. This season they have tremendous depth that can put up numbers. There aren't any weaknesses. I personally cant think of a way UConn could lose unless they forget to show up and have to forfeit.

Great job David. Almost always find your interviews interesting.

I thought Coach P. was... meh... same 'o, same 'o. Talk the talk but can you....?

Your discussion with Mechelle re the mind-set/expectations of coaches and teams vis-a-vis UConn was really good. Teams that are looking to join the 'elite' echelon of wbb don't (for example) hang banners for reaching the Sweet 16. Hell, Geno won't cut down nets for a league or NCAA regional championship. Too much unfinished business.

In terms of the game I expect Duke to keep it close in the first half and then Geno will make adjustments, Coach P. won't, and Duke's lack of half-court offense will be totally exposed once again.

Beating the Hawks is always a good thing....!!!

I give Duke zero chance of beating UCONN.
I never feel confident that UConn will beat any team. Like life, baskets are tenuous. Even a 30 point lead at the half doesn't provide a warm-and-fuzzy. All the opponent needs to do is make up 1.5 points per minute. I'm not comfortable until our lead requires them to make up 5 points per minute and there's only 3 minutes left.

The Shoni Schimmel's of the world can at any given time start Globetrotting the ball into the hoop and thereby createing a disaster!

I know, I know, I have an inferiority complex, (and it's not a very good one).

I give Duke zero chance of beating UCONN.
I'd give Duke a 15 to 20% chance. Even the undefeated UConn teams had at least a couple competitive games. And we're talking about a team with a first team AA playing her first game back in over a month against the second best team in the country on the rosd.

Neither did Baylor have our coaches who woulds never let a game like that get away.
