Did Ross get truly de-sneakered or was it a double dribble?

Was this a legal crossover or did both hands get on the dribble?

I was at the game and when I saw it live, I thought it was a carry. Watching the replay now, it appears to be a legal dribble. It looks weird but his hand does not go under the ball so it is not a carry (or double dribble).
 
Thanks for sharing this - completely missed that in real time. I've been reading lot of negative comments here about Ross on that play. We don't make it to overtime without his defense and rebounding down the stretch. He also recovered very well from that move.....
 
Real time looked illegal. Replay probably clean.

That's the thing about basketball though. When refs see something that LOOKS weird, they're gonna blow the whistle. They've gotta make a decision in a millisecond.

High energy but erratic players like Ross are always gonna be at a disadvantage with these kinds of calls.

People are suggesting he touches the ball with his 2nd hand at the same time as the 1st, which would make it a double dribble, as opposed to putting his hand under the ball.

Yeah I think it's impossible to tell from the replay.
 
I don’t fault Ross for it, it’s a great move. If it’s that difficult to decipher whether he touched it with both hands, I call that a great move.

When I used to be able to hoop, I used this move plenty because my pull up was solid. Nail a few Js, then give the guy a hesi where you bring your second hand close to make it look like a pull up. Looked clean to me.

That’s what it looks like to me. Picture below of the replay. But it happened so fast it’s hard to expect a ref to call that. And I don’t think that’s why Ross jumped like that.

It's absolutely why Ross jumped. It convincingly looked like a gather for a jump shot, legal or otherwise.
 
In real time it looked like a carry. Replay shows that it wasn’t. It looks like a double dribble. But hard to tell from that angle, he is pulling his left hand away as the ball is coming down towards it. Post #10 shows the instant that it would be a double dribble, but the left hand is behind the ball in the frame so can’t tell if it touched or not

Right when it happened 5-6 seconds into the video, he looks down at the ball and his body looks like he is caught off guard and is racing to get it back. Meaning it probably touched his other hand and didn’t go in the trajectory he expected if it was a clean dribble

So based on HEAVY speculation, I’m calling it illegal. Looks cleaner on the replay than it did in real time though. Really close

Think Ross played more than enough great defense this game to be okay if this was a clean move.

People get beat sometimes, it happens. 90% of the time he's putting the clamps on his opponent still.

It was either an incredible move or a double dribble. I don't fault Ross at all here. I actually think he was committed to the jump shot and adjusted when he knew Ross wasn't going to let him get it off.

yea that last slowed down frame confirms there weren't two hands on the ball, great move by Lindsay without the finish. I posted Jordan Poole doing something similar to Damion Lee in the game thread, same spot on the floor with Lee biting just like Ross but not as exaggerated and Poole also went for the floating bank shot finish.

I don’t see that and I’m not sure you can tell on that screen shot.

I can't tell if is a double dribble or not but I'd have to think refs would call it 50% of the time regardless.
 
If you want to see some questionable carries watch Vaaks tonight.
 
In real time I yelled "double dribble!" because I thought he had touched it with his off hand. Hard to tell convincingly even in the replay. Filthy move either way and close enough to get away with it if it was.
 
Whether it should be legal is up for debate, but it's a clean move and one that is used by a lot of players. Very few in college though because it's a tough one to pull off without actually double dribbling like Lindsay did

What does the word “clearly” mean to you? Genuine question. Nothing about that screen shots shows both hands “clearly on the ball”

That's why any players and any fans who say the players today are a million times more skilled than players of the past look so silly. When I was a kid his move was an obvious violation that would be called every time even though his other hand didn't touch the ball, today it's just a legal great move.

Fair question. In this context, I mean clearly as in logically clear, not visually clear. If the ball had just bounced upward into his right hand and was on its way bouncing back down, the only thing stopping it from continuing downward would be his left hand. While I agree the screenshot is not clear, his hand appears to be underneath the ball, which answers the question as to what would prevent the ball from continuing to travel downward. I hope that’s more clear as to what I mean lol

I don't think that's clear at all. It was an inside out dribble with his right hand and the whole point is that he moves his left hand close enough to the ball that it looks like he's going to pull up. It's a bang bang play and hard to officiate but I don't think that's a double dribble.

Yeah, I don't think he does touch the ball, which is why it's definitely not clear and precisely why it's a good move.
