DePaul Post Game Thread

My first half rant
Stop telegraphing and forcing passes Mahaney!
“It’s a back screen. Guard to guard. Just switch it!”
Stop jumping on defense Ross! Stop JUMPING!!!!! Especially for a backup center that Reed was handling well that you decided to jump on and foul.
Stewart and Alex seem to be getting worse every game. Reed too. Jaylen why did you dribble instead of passing, get it stolen and then leave your man while he calmly and slowly hits a 3?
Why is Hass the only one shooting 3s? Where the hell are our awesome 3 point shooters that we heard about all summer? Shoot the damn ball!
You guys wanna play Duke? St. Johns? You will lose by 50 if you don’t get your #%$@%$ together!
Can anybody play basketball on this team? Anybody? You guys are waiting for a hobbled guy who is out of shape and out of practice to be the savior and save your season and that is your master plan?
You allow an allyoop on an inbounds?
Play DEFENSE!!!!! Somebody!!!

Rant over

Fffff………………………k!!!

My Second half rant

Good start.
Put a body on Blocker. Allowing a putback?
Karaban 1 for 9 so far…all bunnies.
0.0000 post game. ZERO. And THAT’s why we have no open 3 point shooters.
Reed is an animal. Ok…we DO have some post game.
Reed! Ball!
Reed is a beast. He just tore the ball out of his hands!
Why didn’t you guys play like that in the first half?

I’m OK now. I’m OK…sort of.
Hass was definitely limited as he was kind of jump dribbling when going up the court a lot like he was favoring the ankle. He gutted it out and played some great d including drawing the charge. He did hit a wide open 3. Is Stewart alright? It seemed they took him out after that collision with Reed late in the second half.

They led at half and beat a much better Xavier team by about the same margin as we beat lousy Depaul for their 7th? straight win, and "They ain't great"? Huh? What are we?
Not great. Just like them.

Stewart took a knee to the lower abdomen or nuts when the Depaul player was driving, don't think it was serious

Diarra is very clearly playing hurt. Limping all over the court towards the end. Credit to him for toughing it out. Credit to Mahaney for playing well and spelling him for some time. Think we're going to get boat raced by Marquette but that's not nearly as big a deal as winning tonight. Get everybody healthy, get into the tournament, and we'll have our chances.
I thought Diarra looked better in the 2nd part of the 2nd half but he was playing on fumes for sure. Big 3 point shot and drawing a charge.

You wonder if Hurley indirectly concede this Marquette game a bit as it’s a game we would have likely lost anyway. With StJ not coming around until next Friday, wondering if he may use the next week and a half to let McNeeley and Hassan rest up. We need guys healthy and to win our home games as priority.

ESPN in their write up made it seemed worst as he didn't play the last 3:34. I was think why is Ross in when he gives us next to nothing compared to Stewart.

Hell no

A moment I was impressed with that probably won't jump out at you in a highlight: Samson Johnson caught the ball outside the arc and quickly noticed his entire side of the court was empty so he dribbled at his man, spun back to his strong hand, stepped across the lane, and laid it in nicely. Can't think of another time I saw that from Samson. Great composure and low risk, high reward play

Well, Stew with all his numbers was still net -4. Ross was +11. It’s been very common even in Stews big box score games to be -net.

The 2006 team came down to the wire all the time. They cruised like 4 times all year. Unless you are counting Albany. This was indeed very similar to Albany.
The 2006 team had no sense of urgency or heart. Most of them were too busy looking forward to the NBA. This team dives for more balls in a game than the 2006 team did all year.

Stew is a vastly superior offensive player. But it’s worth noting that we came back, took the lead, and extended it when Ross came in for him. Ross gives us nothing offensively but he’s a better defender and this is not the first time we’ve played better as a team with Stew on the bench. I can’t explain it. But Stew is far and away our lowest plus/minus. Its nkr an anomaly anymore.

The issue with Stewart is he's just as likely to come out the next game just getting cardio in. He played over 30 minutes vs Butler and only took 3 shots and one of those was a fast break dunk. Playing over 30 minutes at the wing he should stumble into at least 5 shots just by being on the floor, he's gotta stay aggressive when he touches the ball.
Guess who can tell him to be aggressive and make it a point of emphasis?

These issues are coachable.

I have to say that I'm sick of Danny talking about McNeeley being out as if that's a valid reason for the team playing how they have without him.
He is our best player. Who is all around at everything on offense and would be playing even better than we saw ,if healthy. Its a valid reason

I’ve been trying to figure it out myself - I can’t, other than he causes a level of team defense confusion that you just can’t see.

No worries folks. In the box score this looks like we had a thirty point lead most of the way, but they just let up a little down the stretch!

The woman in front of me was irked when I said "I think he got hit in the nuts". Hey lady, it's basketball!

That was just ugly in every facet. That’s 3 dreadful games in his last 4 for AK. 1/14 from the field. We’re not going anywhere with him playing like this. We lose this game against almost any other halfway decent team. That’s how bad DePaul is.
Karaban needs to start shooting more from 3 and less from the paint.

Yeah, that was surprising. In the chat I simply commented, "Well, that's new". It looked like it was repeatable.

A win is a win and DePaul is not helpless and exploited us being spread out on D in the first half. Great bounce back even with AK 1-14. But, I don’t think any of us can feel great about our chances against Marq and SJU.

I said 12, it was 11.View attachment 106628

It was an engaged fanbase. The booing was a burp, then followed by encouraging cheering. I don't boo but I think it was a wake-up call. It was a bad, sloppy stretch by the guys.
I was surprised hearing the boo birds on the telecast. Fanta commented on it. At least it was short lived and nothing I would do directed at this team.

I can't remember in which thread it was, but I commented about how our bigs are often receiving the ball around the foul line with a whole bunch of real estate between them and the basket and weren't even turning around looking to score. Seems the staff recognized that with Johnson on that play and I think Reed even looked for some offense in that soft area of the D. Still would like to see a little more of that where our bigs take one or two power dribbles towards the basket and either knock down a close mid-range shot or take it right to the basket to draw some fouls along with some And-1s. They're both capable of scoring at a solid clip inside the foul line. Just a small wrinkle to their motion offense since I think teams are defending it a little better now that they've seen it a number of times, though this year's roster doesn't seem to execute it particularly well creating good scoring opportunities like they did last year.
