DePaul Post Game Thread

Just take the win.
I feel like this has been said a few too many times this season now. At some point you do want to show an ability to play a full 40, have a killer instinct and not constantly play down. Take the W for sure as we need every one we can get, but not what I would called a building block.

Only takeaway for me is that Reed gets better the longer he’s on the floor. Not sure he’s designed to come off the bench in smatterings. We don’t have a lot of plus physical talent on this team, he is one of the few places we do. This late in season I don’t expect much to change there, and we will keep rolling SJ out there in this mix and match thing.

Aidan was on cusp of having a really nice game but just couldn’t finish on a nice couple takes.

Not sure if anyone saw the Hurley interview with the peacock team, was asked about McNeeley. He danced around it every which way - I wouldn’t expect him back for Marquette.

The C word struggled at home against Xavier tonight. They ain’t great. We just missed our chance against them last time.

Karaban is 3-21 (14%) in the last four games from the arc. That's not a game, it's a slump. We will need him on Saturday. Time to snap out of it.

Yep, he does a lot of other things. But we need him to put the ball in the net.

They're not great but Xavier had double digit 2nd half leads on the road vs both Marquette and St Johns in the past week and a half, they're not an easy out and I thought it was encouraging that UConn had a chance to win in their building without Liam before the step back tonight vs Depaul.

Team had no energy first half. No fouling because they just didn’t play hard. Corrected that late, carried it on and put DePaul away. Ugly at times but a huge game from Reed, clutch moments from Ball. Stewart was huge in the first half. Diarra is not 100% but we don’t have Nowell. Gut check game for him. Alex just frigid but made some great passes.

On to Marquette and hopefully we have Liam and Alex finds his shot.
Great game from our two transfers, who have been much maligned on here. Aiden kept them in it in the first half and Tarris dominated the second half.

For the old timers, this reminds a bit of a 2006 team game, where they stink it up for a big chunk of the game but if you look at the final score it seemed like a by-the-numbers cruise to a comfortable win.
The 2006 team came down to the wire all the time. They cruised like 4 times all year. Unless you are counting Albany. This was indeed very similar to Albany.

One positive is that Solo and Alex seem to be recognizing when they have a path to the hoop, not just spotting up for 3. That recognition means the D can’t close so aggressively, which helps with just a hair more room to shoot.

When we run our motion there are a lot of off ball screens that get a cutter open underneath, and we don’t see it. Get it in there, it can lead to a bucket, a foul or a kickout 3. Instead the ball stays on the perimeter and we get overplayed.

Much better D in the second half from some guys who don’t play such good D usually. I think I started to see the kind of defensive rotations that were taken for granted last year.

On to Milwaukee.

They led at half and beat a much better Xavier team by about the same margin as we beat lousy Depaul for their 7th? straight win, and "They ain't great"? Huh? What are we?

Hurley has never beaten them at their place and Creighton is better than us right now.

Going to continue to push to give more responsibility to our more talented players. We turned it up a notch once we turned the game over to Solo, Stewart, and Reed in the second half.
Not that simple. Two of those guys sleepwalked through the first half.

Dropped one spot on offense in KP to 11, picked up 7 on D up to 125. But the win is really all that matters tonight. Probably worst half I recall since KO years. Even 2nd half wasn't pretty, but inside defense was much, much better, leading to 19 point swing.

Back in the Perno era, the good teams had many games like this against us an I got the feeling that they couldn't have given a crap.

We scored a point a minute for the first three quarters of the the first half. Still got out of the 60s (barely) for a change.

I remember they beat the brakes off Louis Orr’s Seton Hall crew and really flashed what a 40 minute game would look like.

St Joe's loss at Gampel early in the Hurley tenure is the only first half I can remember being worse

If he was really, we win the last game. I think the position is still open.
His block to bucket was one of the highlights of his year and a swing point. He had two blocks and a steal tonight. His ability to get that 3 off quickly is pretty amazing. It’s an interesting shot because his arms look extended, so it makes the shot look long, but he catches and just flicks it from that position.

Diarra is very clearly playing hurt. Limping all over the court towards the end. Credit to him for toughing it out. Credit to Mahaney for playing well and spelling him for some time. Think we're going to get boat raced by Marquette but that's not nearly as big a deal as winning tonight. Get everybody healthy, get into the tournament, and we'll have our chances.

Well that’s because we usually lean on Diarra and Karaban.

We should go back to letting them being excellent role players and allow Solo and Stewart to be the stars with Liam out.
The issue with Stewart is he's just as likely to come out the next game just getting cardio in. He played over 30 minutes vs Butler and only took 3 shots and one of those was a fast break dunk. Playing over 30 minutes at the wing he should stumble into at least 5 shots just by being on the floor, he's gotta stay aggressive when he touches the ball.

THANK. YOU. TARRIS. REED.
I know a lot has been said about Hurley’s staff and how we have 3 head coach worthy assistants, but can someone explain to me why we don’t approach games vs opponents without a good defensive big men as “Tarris Games” and start the game with the intention of getting him 12-15 shots?

DePaul has no one on their roster that can contain him on the block.

Late in the game Alex got into it with someone who was off camera. Fan? Another player? Not sure. But he was still pissed while getting into the handshake line. Hope it is not some dumb bandwagon UConn fan. At least it seemed that way.
