December General CBB Discussion Thread (Non-BE)

Nobody is arguing that Michigan is not the best team right now. The only point people keep making to you is that UConn is also a very good team, and would not be a massive underdog against Michigan like you think. If you stopped trashing every player on UConn people might take your opinions more seriously
And it's also mid-December so we have no idea how each team will look in March. Some teams get better and some teams don't or get worse. There have been many teams that looked like world beaters in December but then faded out. I'm not saying Michigan will but I'm not giving them the national championship yet either.

This same week in the 2023-2024 season Arizona was undefeated and got 62 of the 63 AP votes for #1. UConn was #5. How did that work out?

I'm certainly not denying Uconn is a great team, they are. I also don't think they'd be a massive underdog. All I've said is that Michigan is the most talented team in the country. They may not be the "best" team by end of year, but as long as they don't get hurt, I continue to think because of size/athletecism, arguably the best player in the country and a true rim protector, and because they have a great defensive KPI, they will be the team to beat given most room for error.

This is a good point, and I do think Uconn has an ascending pattern ahead of it. Super excited to see it develop. With that, I think if Uconn played Michigan right now, not sure it would be all that close. I do think it will be right there by end of year.

So we are just the best, right?

You think Mullins as a 185lb frosh is as talented as Yaxel? Have you seen Yaxels grading on Evan Maya? Higher than Boozer, higher in the country. He'll be right there for POY with Boozer. Yet Mullins is right there? CMON MAN. The data does matter.

I'm a Uconn fan as much as anyone here, but sometimes it's hard to take a view seriously.

Must know your take is out of fashion with the rest of the country that is not a Uconn homer.
Lord have mercy. You don’t get it. You post too much to keep up. Talent doesn’t equal production. Talent wise a freshman Braylon Mullins is up there with Yaxel. Yaxel is clearly more developed. He’s 23. Braylon is 19. Would you argue 23 yo Braylon Mulllins wouldn’t be just as good if not better? Or how would you come to grips with Braylon being higher in every draft board? By your same “experts”. They seem to think he’s more talented.

You make it hard to enjoy Michigan this year.

And yes I think UConn will end up being the best.

Sammy the Bull Gravano, how dare you say that.

I guess we see talent differently that way - I'm seeing it as it contributes to this year, I'm not talking about long term potential. What is the point of that? Yaxel is bigger, stronger, faster. The guy has the best offensive efficiency and second best defensive. Mullins won't even scratch that this year. Why am I making it hard to enjoy Michigan? I'm just pointing out they're great, and you want to position Uconn as better. It's just a mismatch on opinion.

Because that’s what talent is. That’s always been how it’s evaluated. And your last sentence is why. A mismatch is hilarious. I tell you what, for your sake they better win it all.

Said earlier, Uconn has the advantage on coach, system and depth. That they have a top 3-4 team. That seems to trigger the Gambino Family. It's always an argument to the bone that Uconn is the best at everything, even if it's against popular consensus.

I quit. Because you don’t remember what YOU say. No one is arguing what you said they are.

Whole conversation started with HooperScooper bringing up Burries, since I mentioned a couple weeks ago that AZ still has a lot of upside to be recognized, as he's higher rated than Mullins and just started slow. Poked a little fun at SJ and it slid into the Michigan convo. AZ will have studs at the 1, 2, 4 and 5. They also have a top 25 kid on the bench in Aristode who should contribute more as the season progresses.

SJ thinks we'll "roll" anyone. This doesn't have to be this heavy - just wild how some of you come out of the bush beating the Uconn thing as though the only acceptable answer is that we are the best at everything.

I've learned not to get too over-confident. It just sets you up for disappointment.

The disagreement is coming from the idea that it’d be a “mismatch” and that Michigan is “clearly more talented”. Do you remember saying those things?

No one is upset you think Michigan is good. We all think Michigan is good. You’re just on a UConn message board attempting to convince UConn fans that their top 5 team wouldn’t stand a chance. Read the room.

michigan is running people over with their depth and oversaturation of scoring threats. they just have a lot of guys who can score and shoot. yaxel is really good obviously but he's not dominating the usage.

idk if they are all that talented in the sense of having a lot of pro prospects or guys who can't be stopped. it would take a similarly deep and physical team though.

It's the middle of December. Conference play hasn't begun for most schools and has barely begun for the remaining schools.

I'm sure it's great to be viewed as clearly the best team in the sport, in any sport, a third of the way through. I may be alone, but I'm far more concerned with whether we will or will not be standing when the title game ends in April.

I said our opinions are a mismatch, and yeah Michigan is more talented. They are a physical buzzsaw. To me that mean, bigger, stronger, faster.

Not once did I say they wouldn't stand a chance.

We can’t be underestimated. We have pulled out wins getting out rebounded. However, rebounding needs to be fixed by the time tournament starts. We need to figure out how to get some rebounding from the 3 and 4 spot.

Got it on the mismatch. I can still disagree with Michigan being “more talented” without being a homer. If you want someone to disagree with you that Michigan is bigger you won’t find anyone.

And I think @superjohn point was a UConn that lost by 4 to AZ without Reed and Mullins would’ve ran them with Reed and Mullins. Is that not reasonable?

Alex just has to be better. Taris being back and healthy will help.

You wouldn't get pushback if you didn't make up things and constantly bash our players.

I said we would've rolled Arizona had Reed and Mullins played. That's not exactly an out of pocket take considering we were winning with 2 minutes left in the game.
I think they'd have won in Gampel flying across country midweek too.

I don't think they'd run AZ later this year on a neutral court once their frosh develop some. I'd call it a dead heat, with Michigan a cut above.
