Was watching the SC vs. Auburn game - SC looks good. But Gail Goestenkors was one of the announcers and they were talking about how hard Dawn is on her players, how much she swears, and how she made a New Year's resolution to cuss less.

Apparently Dawn said it lasted less than a day.

I will say the SC guards are very athletic, but they don't seem to run a moderate or slow paced half court offense. A few passes, get the ball into the post, and let the post player go to work. That won't work against bigger teams, but it worked well against Auburn. they also play very physical and frenetic defense. Would love to see them face Kentucky. 2 teams that go 90 miles an hour...

Anyway they don't seem to have a lot of patience on offense. I could see them forcing UCONN to play out of their minds for 5-10 minutes (like ECU did) but once UCONN settles down, SC will have a hard time scoring. They will rely on their defense to try to keep it close with UCONN.

It was a game vs. Auburn - they are not very good, but the stadium looked really full at SC. Not sure about the attendance but it was a lively crowd...

At the Duke game...... I thought I would be close enough to the SC bench to see and hear all of her antics....... while she was very animated (she got an early technical) .. it was so loud in Cameron........ I couldnt hear all of her yelling and screaming.

On the other hand......during the KY game.. I could hear Mitchell loud and clearly

She's got nothing on Geno in the profanity department. Clearly, February 9 is in the bag...

Neither of them have a thing on Cynthia Cooper at USC(maybe it has something to do with the schools being named USC)
Last season there were so many words heard on the Pac12 broadcasts from Galen Center(USC's home arena) that the Pac12 decided to do the last two broadcasts from their studios in Sam Francisco, no announcers were at the arena. The announcers, in the past were located right next to the USC bench. When the Pac12 network did Tuesdays game, UCLA v USC, the announcers were situated about 15 feet further away from the USC bench.

Eric- I thought SC needlessly ran up the score by pressing an undersized, outclassed Auburn team right up to the final buzzer. Wilson didn't impress- pretty much all layups and putbacks, uses only her left hand, when putting the ball on the floor she never goes right, and hardly fleet of foot. Someone should tell her it ain't 1970- those tighty-whitey-shorties arggggggggg.

Thats one of the reasons I didnt get a ticket close to the UCONN bench last year in Cameron. Fortunately I dont have to worry about that for the foreseeable future

I sit 4 rows behind the visiting head coach and I didn't hear anything particularly bad from Cooper. Of course, I'm usually making too much noise to hear them. Dawn does curse a lot, but I love her fire. She has actually mellowed a little bit as her teams have improved. Between Dawn and Frank Martin, I don't think any school has a saltier pair of basketball coaches.

I haven't been behind the UConn bench, but I sat behind the Temple bench once when Dawn was there. The air was absolutely blue. As her visibility increases over the next few years, I wonder whether this will become an image problem for her at SC. Having lived in Philly for a while, I can attest to the fact that not everyone who lives in the inner city drops -bomb in every sentence, and in my experience, they can turn such talk off if they want to. This is one for which we should stay tuned.

NOBODY BUT NOBODY compares to Frank Martin. OMG !! I was at a Kansas State Men's game years ago, and that guy went completely berserk and nuts. Several times I thought he was gonna physically beat the crap out of his players, his glare was insane and the words he screamed so loudly that everyone in the arena could hear would make Andrew Dice Clay grimace. Dawn, Geno and all the other excitable coaches are church mice next to Frank Martin.

I'm a big fan of self-control, and don't like to see anyone, particularly a coach, go "completely berserk and nuts." But colorful language? That's a different matter altogether....go for it Dawn! We can handle it!!

Attendance was approx 16,450 I think I saw on ESPN web site. They are good. They are athletic and deep. I think they will be our toughest match up in February, even though I think we will beat them.

I thought Aja handled the ball well, grabbed good rebounds, and has nice touch turn around and short jumpers. Double doubles as a freshman coming off the bench is pretty impressive I think.

That's correct; I was very happy with the attendance on a cold, rainy night. Silly, I know, but as a fan that is one "title" that I can help impact and I want to beat Tennessee this season on the court AND in the stands, because I think it is a selling point Dawn can use when recruiting against the Vols.

A number of our fans are a little uncomfortable with Frank's demeanor. If it is only yelling, then I'm ok with it. I will say that Frank is a helluva defensive coach and has our men's team playing much better over the last month. If we beat Iowa State in Brooklyn on Saturday, I'll say he's turned us a round a year ahead of schedule.

Funny, I didn't know that Frank Martin coached basketball. His work as a Transporter keeps him pretty busy and he probably has a rule against it.

You know. Kinda like KML playing for 31 minutes in a 50-point laugher against SMU, or in a 40-point win over Vanderbilt. Like having THREE PLAYERS (KML, Stewart, Nurse) play 30+ minutes in a 98-64 route over DePaul. Like Tuck, Stewart, and Nurse playing 30+ minutes each in a 36-point win over Creighton? Or like.or should I even go on? USC beat Auburn by 19 points, not 30 or 40 or 50 points. Hardly none of the Gamecocks play for 30 minutes in games this season: Mitchell has played 30+ minute-games the most - she has 4. A total of 9 times has a player played a game for 30+ minutes, and you can find the vast majority of them in just 2 games - the Syracuse and Duke games that were tight battles. UConn has two players in Stewart and Mosquedo-Lewis who AVERAGE 30+ minutes per game....
For most of the season Geno had only 8 scholarship players available so some starters had to have big minutes. Courtney Ekmark is just returning from a stress reaction in her foot and is quite rusty so the trend will continue for a while until the rust wears off. Even when she's back in the swing of things, there will only be 9 scholarship players.

UConn Roster
- Natalie Butler is sitting out the NCAA mandated year for transfer players.
- Briana Pulido and Tierney Lawlor are walk-ons. Hmm, they may have been given scholarships by now, but they started out as walk-ons.

Please ease up on the "pitiful" comments.

LOL.....no. Coach Staley started putting in the reserves with 3 minutes left in the game. Put in walk-on Farmer with 2 minutes left. Coach Staley has been diligent about letting the reserves all get quality minutes in games often AT THE EXPENSE of running up game scores. It's why USC only has one 100+ game thus far this season.

Mitchell for USC of course leads the team in minutes per game, with 27.3 mpg. Then it's Welch with 24.8 mpg, then Sessions with 21.5 mpg, then Wilson with 20.8 and Coates with 20.6. Ibiam, a regular starter, averages 18.4 mpg...

As for the rest of your post....I just thought it was pitiful....

WRONG. Unlike what I saw yesterday, when UConn starters are in late (and they often are) they do not press a whipped, outclassed opponent.

Discussions about "leaving the regulars in too long" are always tedious and probably should be avoided, but your stat examples are disingenuous. As Nan mentioned, UConn has has a roster with 11 players, and with two walk-ons and a regular player (Ekmark) who just returned last game from an injury, so they've had mainly 8 players to share the majority of the minutes. USCar has a roster of 14 though Jatarie White has been in a boot for all but 6 games. When you're spreading the minutes between 10 regular players as in the Auburn game, the average per player will likely be less than for a team doling them out to 8.

The other factor is that UConn has been playing a tough schedule (number 4 in Sagarin) with many ranked opponents that require the core players to stay in the game longer. USCar has played an almost laughably weak schedule (#128 SOS in Sagarin), so it would be pretty amazing and in poor taste if Mitchell and Wilson were getting 30+ minutes against the likes of Hampton and Central Michigan, and the likes of Liberty (#133), NCCU (#339), Clemson (#173), San Diego State (#249), Charlotte (#158), and Savannah State (#232). Those Sags ranking numbers aren't as bad as the ones on some of the other SEC teams, but let's just say that USCar has played an extremely puffy schedule that doesn't need to have Wilson banging for anywhere near 30 minutes, and maybe not even 27.2.

Regarding minutes... you realize we only had 10 dressed players for much of the season, and that was counting two 5'7" walk-ons. Of course the minutes will be more for the rest. What would be the point of having them beat up and pressed for 10 minutes a game?

As for your 8 scholarship players: I see a roster of 12 players. I see where 12 players have played SOME sort of minutes this season. Setting aside Ekmark with her injury and understanding that Sadie Edwards is no longer a part of the team, that still leaves 10 available players, unless you are about to come up with some other reasons why players cannot take to the court. We are NOT talking about closely contested games versus top-ranked opponents - we're talking about 30-40-50 point routes versus the cupcakes on UConn's schedule. Are you seriously trying to say that the non-scholarship players on UConn's roster - I guess there are 3 of them - are so inept that they can't play mop-up minutes late in games when UConn is up 30+ points?? Also keep in mind that USC has FOURTEEN (14) scholarship players, and only 1 walk-on on roster. One of our scholarship players - Doniyah Cliney - is basically red-shirting, hasn't played a single minute and won't until 2015-16. We've also had Jatari White shut down for a number of games with a stress reaction of her own: she's missed 5-6 games thus far, although she's expected back soon...
I'll only address the last part of your post. You may "see" a roster of 12, but come on. It's 11. Edwards has gone. It was Ekmark's first game back from an almost 2 month lay off due to an injury. (the game you refer to vs. SMU - Ekmark was still not back).

VS. ECU - highest MPG was 29 by Tuck followed by 27 for Stewie and MoJeff. Geno started taking the starters out at about the 8 minute mark, and the bench players played 19, 25, and 17 minutes (starter Nurse got only 17 minutes as well). Even Ekmark got 10 minutes in her first game back. ECU is a VERY physical team. To make a comment like "are they so inept they can't play mop-up minutes" is offensive and unnecessary. These are kids who would likely be reserves on a team like Boston College, or ECU, and ECU had most of their starters in till late. AND if UCONN is pressing, to practice it for other games, they call it off with at least 10 minutes left in the game.

Unlike SC who was using the full court press with just a few minutes left in the game. I think that's where the criticisms are coming from. If you can't see the difference, then you are not objective. Maybe you've missed it when people have been critical of Geno for many things in the past - especially comments about players who aren't playing well - so if you really think UCONN fans are incapable of being objective, you are wrong, and need to look in the mirror.

No one is saying Staley sucks, or should be fired, or is a beeyotch, or a horrible coach.

Um, objective reasoning? Do all USCar fans talk smack with so little to go on.

Glad you can agree to "set aside" a player who's been mainly injured except a few minutes in the opener and the returner test on Wednesday. Edwards got a limited amount of minutes in 6 games because Geno believed that was what she had earned, and there are two walk-ons, so basically there have been 8 players to see major minutes, and at the end of games you will need to have some of your core players on the court. With UConn's #4 SOS schedule that has included three games against ten top 10 teams, opportunities for the walk-ons are less. Even if Duke and ND were getting whacked late in the game, it is not only insulting but dangerous to put your walk-ons in with say 7 minutes to go.

Why penalize UConn on the usage question because it beat Duke by a lot while USCar barely escaped? Quite simply, USCar is a big team with a very poor schedule so far, so it has big opportunities to sit the top players against a #300+ rated team.

But for both teams, no matter what the competition, you do need to give the regulars time on the court with different configurations to get ready for conference and Tournament play, so obviously Staley should give her 10 to 11 regulars a lot of time together against Auburn, just as Geno wants to give his various configurations of 8 and now 9 core players time to gel even against teams like ECU, which at #46 is still better than almost all the teams USCar has played against such as #74 rated Auburn. But neither Geno nor Dawn cares if some fans carp about player management at the ends of games because they're just doing what needs to be done to get their teams ready.
