I honestly don't get the leaving early if you aren't a clear cut top of the line college player. Look at Michigan: Nick Stauskas and Glenn Robinson III declared. Really? Does Beilein sleep well at night knowing these kids would be better off staying in school? Obviously the agents are in these kids' ears, but they need to look long-term, not the initial POTENTIAL contract.

DD would be better off staying in school, playing 40 min a game and improving in all facets than playing 5 min MAYBE in the NBA next year with most likely stints in the D league. Dominate the college game before thinking you're ready for the next level. He grew up postseason, but this is the same kid that averaged 5.5 PPG down the stretch of the regular season.

Boatright, I don't think there's a question what he needs to do.

Stauskas is a top 20 pick and could go higher based on workouts because his skill level will really shine there, he should go. As for GR3, he's kind of similar to DD except without the high level play in a championship stretch run. He's shown flashes of brilliance but he's been way too inconsistent, does he come back and show the same pattern of uneven play and run the risk of scouts souring on him after another year of not living up to potential? He's a borderline 1st rounder, I don't blame him for giving it a go and trying to secure a 1st round spot, Tim Hardaway Jr did the same thing last year, he wasn't a 1st round lock when he declared but he worked his way there.

The way I see it, DD is a victim of his own success in the tourney… Pro teams may think he has turned a corner, where as if he comes back & reverts to his inconsistent play (a real possibility), his stock will go down.

Unfortunately, I think it's too much of a risk for him to come back…

Hope I'm wrong...

I disagree. You are who you are. If you are turning into a great player, you will have the work ethic to get better and better everyday. If that work ethic isn't there, in anything you do, it's not going to work out long term. Playing under Ollie another year with the guidance and knowledge of the NBA that he can instill in DD (that I believe he needs) will do wonders for his career.

It's better than travelling around city to city, not getting better, not getting PT, not getting a college degree and getting weeded out in the league after your rookie deal is up.

Yes, he would run the risk of getting injured coming back, but it's best long-term to return to school for his senior year. This isn't a shot at DD, but it's not like he was one of the best players in the country this year. He showed signs, but he needs to work on consistency if he's gonna make it at the next level. Coming back will do that.

The problem is, signing a Pro rookie deal is still a life changing payday. A 3 year rookie deal in 2013 for a mid-round pick equates to $4.5M.

It's a big risk coming back with the chance that his stock could take a hit & push him out of the first round, or worse...

If you're a 1st rounder you gotta go. KEA stayed and it hurt him. Drummond wasn't ready but leaving was the best thing that could have happened to him.

I hate to be a pessimist, but he's not ready to come out yet. I don't think he'll ever be a starter in the NBA regardless. If scouts watch the first 30 games of the season, he's just an ordinary player. Players with real NBA size can shut him down at the 3, and no way he can cover a legit NBA 4 (talking Lamarcus Aldridge, Lebron James, Kevin Love, Blake Griffin). You're lying to yourself if you think he's that good. I know that they draft on potential, and for Deandre, if his stock is really at an all time high then it's probably smart for him to leave, but he's really not that good, especially compared to the top players in this draft. I really don't want to see him end up in the D-league and then overseas like a lot of players that declare early do; he's too good of a kid for that.

Scouts will watch everything, but it's the peak performances that tell them what a player can do. It's much easier to raise your mediocre performances than to raise your peak performance.

Deandre proved in the tourney that he could score against guys with real NBA size and athleticism. Nobody shut him down, and he was able to get his shot off and hit a high percentage even when closely guarded by future NBA athletes.

How well he can cover is his problem, but he went a long way toward answering that this season. In the NBA, the concern is, he may not be big or strong enough to defend the 4 or quick enough to defend the 3, so he's without a position. But, against that view, he was impressive defensively in the tourney. He's done a great job covering big men all year. He wasn't getting pushed around much. He's skinny but not weak. He's become a smart defender.

Another year in college would clarify what he is for the NBA. I don't think it would change his draft position much. He deserves to go late first round but you never know, it's a question of fit and NBA team needs. If there are less talented players who fit a role in an NBA team's style, they may go for them over Deandre.
