Dan Hurley talks like the perfect coach for difficult UConn job

His coaching style is not NBA-style at all. Nor does he have any experience at that level.

1. Defensive pressure does not work in the NBA really It's a very college-ready offense, but at the NBA level will give up 100,000 lay ups per game. It's all about matchups and adjustments. To his credit--Hurley's teams defend the 3 point shot like psychopaths. Something that is really needed in the NBA.
2. No one yet knows how Hurley will handle big-time player ego. Let alone NBA player ego.
3. He isn't a great offensive coach yet.

When you looked at a coach like Brad Stevens in college, it was obvious he had NBA traits. Matchup coaching, offensive sets, flexibility, etc. Hurley is more of a motivator as his biggest strength.

Doesn't mean it couldn't change though. Tons of potential and hunger with this guy.
He was able to handle his brother's ego.

It was a strange interview to me, in that it almost tried to separate him from UConn. On several occasions, when asked about coaches he learns from or idolizes, he doesn’t mention Calhoun once. Then the NBA mention. It almost seems as if the interview was edited to or structured in a certain way with an anti UConn bias. Him discussing dreams of coaching in the NBA before coaching a game at UConn and not mentioning Calhoun don’t add up well.

Why should he mention Calhoun? Hurley’s crossed paths with lots of other coaches in his years in the game and developed strong relationships with several of them.

Because of his name and where’s he from, he gets a lot of attention from NYC writers. I think it can only help UConn, but it’s not necessarily abou UConn. The Hurley name gets clicks.

It is really time for the season to start.

This post sounds like all those hot take sports TV and radio shows that seem to twist things just so they have something to complain about. Don Quixote's windmill.

In retrospect, KO getting poached would have been a good thing.
Yep, he could have ridden off into the sunset but life is usually messier than that.

Fair enough. I just re-read the interview, it’s fairly balanced. I’m relieved that Designated Hitter said the NBA would be way down the line.

This is exactly what I thought after I read it.

There are other factors besides money that play into him being poached by another program. For example, family stability. Living somewhere that you like and feel comfortable. If you are making 3 million, is another half million or million really going to make your life any different? Money is not everything to many people, believe it or not. I don’t get the impression from Dan that he wants to be one of those guys who bounces all over the country just for a few extra bucks. I’m sure he lives quite comfortably on his salary at Uconn.

I actually thought it was odd too. How do you not even ask him anything about JC? Second, is it a difficult job as the title suggests? Probably not when compared almost all other college jobs. There are high expectations, but calling a great job difficult seems like awkward wording.

I thought it was a great piece about Dan Hurley. I learned more about the events in his life that have made him the person and coach he is today. I respect him even more now.

Why would Calhoun be an influence? I think it's a plus he didn't pander.

Exactly. Besides, Hurley has said he's taken a bunch from watching JC in the past, having played in the OBE.
