Dan Hurley says UConn could lose ‘Basketball Capital of the World’ status without more support

To anybody who doesn't understand why we need to leave the Big East (if we receive a power conference offer) this is why. The status quo is not sustainable from a financial standpoint. Sooner or later, it will become very difficult for us to compete for the top players- and coaches- when we can't afford to pay them due to the small TV contract the Big East has.

The problem is that all the extra money will go to the football team to try to not embarrass itself in a big 4 conference.

Braylon Mullins is the most well known player in CBB (if he returns) and Dan Hurley is the most famous coach. We have one of only two women's coaches anybody knows and the most famous women's player every year. This is a huge advantage, and winning it all next year (M&W) could be a real money maker. We have a good shot at that, and I love that Dan is in love with this school. Businesses would be silly to not to take advantage of this

99% of anyone with half a brain and not stuck in their ways would take a ticket out of the Big Least as fast as you can say ACC. Our guy Nelson would go to his grave talking about how much potential Depaul has, and how the SEC is overrated annually. As if it's 2007.

Even worse, this could eventually push him to the NBA. I can see more and more coaches deciding they don’t wanna play the NIL game and going to the NFL/NBA
This has been my concern for awhile - as the budgets become more inequitable, Hurley will get to a point where he knows he can't compete. As soon as that happens, he's not sticking around. Dusty winning it this year with 5 transfers was proof enough that you can put together monsters in the portal with $$. As is, if Danny wins one more anytime soon, I think he's going to get close to checking off the boxes at this level and knowing it's not sustainable long term.

We're doing all the right things from the revenue generating sports side.

I absolutely hate that it has turned into this. The NCAA needs to set salary caps ASAP.

I’m still baffled that Rutgers is in the B1G saying they are the NY market. Rutger Sports hasn’t contributed anything!!!
There are so many schools in power conferences that don't contribute anything. Hell, Kansas State and Virginia Tech don't even have a single national championship in any team sport...we have 25. It's an absolute joke that we're not in a power conference.

Didn’t we have one of the higher total spend and estimated nil spend last year? Didnt skinner just donate 15 mil? Didnt our entire starting five get paid for a national commercial played 100 times? Wouldn’t we end up getting about the same in a p4 because more would have to go to football? None of this NIL stuff makes any sense at all

If we pay attention to the timing of remarks during Hurley’s chase of the NIL pieces to build a competitive roster, there is a reason why it comes up. NCAA becomes a place for have’s and don’t have’s financial ability to build the best roster. While I get that so much money was always involved but with the players being free gladiators (less free education and exposure), college sports became a combination of a fantasy football league with a professional league with no rails. Coaches position will evaluate from developers of talent to NBA style coaches unless some changes are introduced. I think the aura that Hurley inherited by watching his dad developing players will fade away when NBA coaching provides more stability of the team roster and structure giving teams from smaller markets (San Antonio, Oklahoma) chances to compete. The road college hoops is following is paved with dollar bills if you want be successful (Michigan with all transfers developed by other coaches and paid at Michigan). I agree that if UConn is to remain a powerhouse, we need more resources, but not only from businesses, a conference change will be an integral part of that requirement. Businesses alone are not sustainable long term.

I'd agree with most of that, but it's Caitlin Clark and everyone else, for now. She is far ahead in fame.

I agree we need to leave the Big East but as the first poster mentioned it is because of money not the quality of the league

Yeah, like the horror show in LA where he was invited?

Just win, keep on building and adapting. Be the best football program in G5, support the football program and pack the rent and win. There are G 5 power house programs with even less NIL than UConn. Let's hope Candle can get the program to another level.

It’s not just a problem for non-P4 teams like UConn. There is an “arms race” in college sports that requires an ever increasing amount of money to sustain that which is unsustainable. Billionaire Mark Cuban effectively purchased a national championship in football for Indiana, his alma mater, a school with more losses all time than any other D-1 school in history. At the University of GA, a school who’s sports donor budget exceeded $300 million over the past 4 years, there is a growing sense of fatigue as donors are continually being asked to increase their donations so the University can compete for national championships.

While I don’t much like the idea that government should solve the problems of college sports competition, with the colleges themselves unable to deal with the issue, legislation by the federal government may be the only way to bring some measure of stability to a situation that’s completely out of control.

Also we should all be supporting our UConn content creators even if you disagree or dislike them. Just give them likes at least. Also subscribe to Storrs Central at the very least subscribe to their YouTube channel and like their video. Every little bit we do as a fanbase helps.

I know people are upset with the guy from locked on for saying Mullins is back but listening to his live show was far different then his regular half hour shows. He is very well connected to the program and he has been right with what he has put out there.

This is my exact feel. There is and will be a fatigue with businesses being asked for the money plus coffers are not unlimited especially considering the amounts involved each year. Folks tend to concentrate on today and this coming season. Even billionaires do not have millions every years to be thrown around.

Sure they do. But you're right, there will be an overall NIL fatigue sooner rather than later. And UConn doesn't have any billionaire boosters.

if you have a billion dollars, you're making 60 million a year just on the market. Of course you can't yolo that all and stay solvent, and there are plenty of other expenses...but a couple million a year is reasonably sustainable for someone who wanted to.

The biggest problem billionaires have is staying billionaires. Their ego won't allow them to drop ain the rankings. They'll throw $20 or $30 million at their favorite team every year.

But they'll pull back their donations without a championship at least every three or four years in basketball, and improvement every year in football.

yeah 100% staying out of politics, but a better transfer rule does help this a bit. since there SUCH a high risk of throwing good money at a player who doesn't pan out and its harder to transfer.....there ends up being a much better way to take advantage of good scouting. Pretty much you can't play money ball if as soon as everyone realizes a player is good he can just leave.

Go back to transfers having to sit a year, and it would go a long way to solving the problem.

For those who think a player should be in charge of his own destiny, he is. If they can find more money elsewhere, they can absolutely take it. If not, they need to find a team willing to pay them a sit a year.

If it gets to be too much, and it's not fun anymore I have no problem giving up college bball.
I'm a musician and I no longer seek out new bands and artists because so much has been lost and screwed.
Money changes everything. We are a silly species

of the 15 million donation not 1 single dollar is going to NIL! It’s in place to help the university replace our coaches when they leave
