Dallas Wings, part 2

The fear is that his comments can be interpreted to mean exactly that.

I get that he shouldn't be throwing his current roster under the bus, that would be unseemly at best. But they are 9-34 and have lost their last ten games. They are in last place and have the worst scoring defense in the league. Would it be too much to say that they are not happy being the league's patsy and that they will be looking to improve, with the obvious pathway being to add talent for next season via free agency?

As you note they need elite starters, including at wing and center. The problem is I didn't hear any of that through all of Bibb's happy talk. In fact, he sounds very comfortable adding a high draft pick and otherwise standing pat.

Would any NBA, NFL, or MLB fanbase put up with pablum like this?

As a long suffering Bills fan, I can definitely say that some fanbases will tolerate a lot of pablum as you say. If you add the NHL into the list of leagues, the Toronto Maples Leads fan base is an excellent example of tolerating pablum, while paying handsomely for tickets every year.

The Bills have been in the playoffs in each of the last five years and have won seven playoff games during that stretch.

So they haven't won the big one but they are competitive.

I'm a Giants fan, don't talk to me about suffering!

I agree with this 100%. Based on the negative comments, I was expecting that he said "we think we have a really great team and will make no off season adjustments - with the expectation that a top 3 draft pick will make us a title contender".

Yeah he said they have a good core of young players. Would you expect him to say "our young talent sucks"? I mean any fan can look at the roster and acknowledge that of the young players, Paige is great, Maddy is very good, Guiselsoder is solid, and the rest are role players. To have starters of Berger and Jones, who were WNBA castoffs from other teams, is a recipe for failure like we've seen.

He had great things to say about Paige, ROY, the fans, the 20K who came out to see the team when they played at the larger arena, and talked about the new arena for 2027.

At this point, if they are keeping Arike, then a core of Paige, Arike, Maddy, and that's really about it. I think Geiselsoder, Miller, and Okonwu (called up in August and has put up really good numbers) could be solid - decent bench players. I think they need to go all in on Betts, but Fudd would not be a terrible back up plan at all!

TBH I don't see Berger, Jones, Yeru, Hines-Allen, Quinnerly, Harris, or James as "must haves", or even good fits for the team. MAYBE Azia James. And maybe Christyn Williams.

It's clear they need elite starters. The need an elite wing and center IMHO. I'm not sure Miller, Geiselsoder, Okonwu, or any of the others, could grow into that. So much will happen this off season. I think their future is pretty bright unless they do decide to double down on ALL the young "talent".
These are all very valid points. The only thing I would add is, having worked with these athletes for months during the course of this season, are any of them projectable (as so many of this season's exciting players have far exceeded the level of play they displayed when first drafted)?

Paige is really the only person to keep, use the remaining money to attract good free agents to play with her. No one else is good enough to start in the league, so build a new team.
Well, I think they should probably keep Maddie. She may not be starter level but I think she’s a quality bench player. Obviously they want to get the best players they can. I would think Paige would be a fairly strong draw for a lot of players. Who doesn’t want to play with someone that passes the ball as well and as willingly as Paige?

As I said build your team around Paige, and see which veterans would like the opportunity to compete for a championship with her. Unlike most of the really good guards Paige plays defense. To people like Stewie, Emma, JJ, Nneka that could be a selling point.
Actually that would be a pretty good lineup.

You conveniently overlooked the 2+ decades of no play-offs, a lot of bad free agency and coaching decisions. Over that period, your Giants won 3 Superbowls (this includes wide right), drafted Eli to replace Phil, and made Tom Brady miss out on a couple Lombardi trophies. As a Giants fan, I'm not sure if you're authorized to provide a comparison. 😉

Is Lou still under contract to the Wings?
Per herhoopstats, Lou:
  • is on Suspended Contract in 2025;
  • will be on Suspended Contract-Contract Expired status (same as Awak Kuier) in 2026.
Explanation here (current CBA). It is similar to Gabby’s prior situation with Chicago, although Chicago traded Gabby to LA just after they suspended her.

I believe both Awak and Lou are available for the expansion draft unless they are protected by Dallas (current CBA).

Paige finishes the season on a high note with 24 pts, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 steal & 2 blocks as the Wings beat the Mercury by 21 at home. The Mercury have locked up their playoff seed and had nothing to play for and the Wings were playing only for pride. But after 9 straight losses, any win feels good.

In a couple weeks, to the surprise of practically no one who follows the WNBA, Paige will be named ROY, after completing a wonderful season. Paige will finally have some time to rest up, enjoy life for awhile and take in a few Huskies games to cheer on her former teammates.

We should add that she only had 1 turnover and ended the season with a 2.7/1 assist to turnover ratio.
PS it's picky, but I think she got shorted credit for at least 2 assists, and they somehow missed a steal in the 3rd quarter...

If that prevented her from getting 3.0/1 ratio, we RIOT!!!! 😉

Has Paige signed with any overseas team or is she (hopefully) going to take some time off until her Unrivaled season starts?

.-.
Agree, Rocky, not exactly an inspiring look ahead. What's left to say that hasn't already been said on this forum? Right now a shout out of well done to Paige as the season ends, she becomes the ROTY with some historic firsts and she gets some time off before Unrivaled begins.

Off season and next season for the Wings? Some hard decisions (hopefully by those qualified) so they don't end up playing Groundhog Day II in 2026.
Please help Kamilla escape the Chicago locker room.

This is not a promotion but for those who subscribe to their newsletter, HerHoopsStats put out a complete list today of 2026 Free Agents. No doubt several beside of course Curt Miller in the Wings organization will be studying the list carefully until the list becomes official in January for their needs but importantly who will mesh with their future franchise player for which would certainly expect that Paige will be consulted at least informally for her input.

I would put complete faith in Paige's knowledge of the players who would fit best in the Wings organization. I think we are going to see a much improved Wings team taking the floor over the next several years because in Paige we believe - and win. .

On the plus side, the Wings are clearly Paige’s team now. Just about everyone likes Paige, many players know her personally and most would love to play on the same team with her.

The minus is of course that playing with Paige comes with playing in Dallas, a franchise that has struggled mightily in recent years. If GM Miller can sell enough solid veterans that Dallas is the up and coming place to be, the Wings might just be a “much improved team” next season.

Paige’s personality is literally kinda magical. Pretty much every player in the league knows her now, has experienced her kindness and generosity all bundled up together with a relentless competitive spirit. It must be very tempting to want to play on her team. I’m struck by how happy Maddy and Hayley and Grace seem to be just hanging out with her, much less playing with her. And Yueru seemed genuinely astonished at her good fortune to find herself on a team with such a generous spirit.

Just a brief post script on this forum. What I have been particularly impressed with is the way that Paige took on the leadership on the Wings. No bravado. No in your face stuff. No attitude. Just pure talent and joy in playing the game with fierce determination and skill. She let her unbridled motivation to be the best that she and her teammates can be as an example for her teammates to follow. She is a leader in the best way: not just by what she says but what she does and how she does it by putting in the hard work to get better every day.

I know Curt Miller knows Geno and has probably consulted him on occasion. I doubt this would ever happen, but Curt might take a page out of Geno's book and ask a cadre of his players, say Paige and 2-3 others, about the players he's serious about pursuing. That has certainly worked for Geno/CD. OTOH, if he does it and word gets out, that would be bad, so it's probably an awful idea, but in my perfect world of Totoros, giant wolves, and moving castles, it would work.

My best ideas come from the Catbus in my neighbor’s garage.
