Dallas Wings, part 2

Maddy has been doing well since coming back from her injury

Maddy having some good games plus she and Paige seem to have established a good relationship (maybe it's that BE background) that carries over to the floor. Let's see what happens the rest of the season and next season. Anyway, I think the Wings management aware of what's needed and may yet turn this team into a competitor next year. Listening to Paige and Maddy in the Atlanta Dream post-game certainly seems that they are determined to look ahead and not behind.

Again a 100 point performance by the Wing d - can't spell Dallas without a L.

Sooooo, while looking ahead is the party line, I would, if a Dallas fan, be REALLY concerned about the lack of effort, scheme, performance and attention to defense. Perhaps the current coach will join Lincoln Riley on the not seat, and the video master does not have a buy out.

Not to pile on, but . . . .

Dallas does 1 for August. They end the month with consecutive 100 point "efforts" on defense. 2 weeks ago they surrender 106 points in Vegas and what doesn't happen in Vegas, unfortunately, does not stay in Vegas.

The collapse in any semblance of defense is remarkable with the embarrassing loss of 35 points at home underscoring the epic lack of defense. There may may any number of "reasons" for this abysmal performance, but no excuse.

It's not a surprise that Paige's assist numbers have increased since Matty returned. She's the only reliable shooter to cash in on Paige's dimes.
As for last night's game, every time Paige (or another Wings player) drove near the basket, they got double teamed and pounded (with rarely a foul call). When an ATL player drove, they remained mostly untouched.
This team needs lots of help!
At least CW got her first WNBA hoop. And Paige's double/double, of course.

None who played defense. In contrast, the Liberty, down 3 starters did.
But how many of the previous game’s New York and Dallas rosters — in proportion to available players — are on (or recently on) 7-day/ hardship contracts? (New York vs. Dallas)

Dallas is possibly at the best possible scenario for the league-wide reset in 2026. Does it really matter if they get artistic points in the last meaningless games of 2025?

No

Stop it, please. Dallas is getting beaten up by teams with star centers and frontcourt depth, when they have none. Dallas played a Dream team with 2 legitimate centers, Griner & Jones who dominated in the paint, where the Wings were attempting to guard them with a 6’3” PF or a 6’2” wing. When that didn’t work, the guards tried to provide help defense, which left Howard and the other Dream shooters wide open at the arc.

That type of matchup will get you blown out every time. It’s amazing that the Wings can usually hang around for 2-3 qtrs. When you don’t have the horses, you can’t win the race.

If Dallas can get Betts, they’ll have one of the best young threesomes in the league with Paige and Maddie. Trade Arike for a good player and they will be looking pretty good! Of course, either Koclanes is going to have to step up or all the good players in the world won’t be enough! I kind of doubt he’ll be around too much longer. Maybe Curt should step in? Otherwise, hire Cheryl Miller!

Betts has another year to play with her younger sister, who some say is the better player. I'd rather get a free agent big and not have to live through the adjustment year. Her much publicize mental issues don't thrill me either. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but if I can have one with that background and one without, I'm going without every time.

Do you mean another year after the upcoming season? That doesn’t sound right. Lauren doesn’t have a redshirt possibility. She will be in the draft next April.

No, I mean this year. She told the team before the finals she was staying. Another year is this year.

When would that trade occur? The team has Four (4) Games left in the season, after which she is an unrestricted free agent.

The Wings are not going to “trade” her. The way that would go down is that they would simply not resign her. Trade suggests that they would get another player in exchange. That said, the team would need to sign another free agent who franchise management believes to be a better choice.

One would hope that they would be able to sign several different top tier players from the pool. But we will have to see how that goes!

General comment not directed at any of the posts in this thread:

This is a Dallas Wings thread - please continue general WNBA discussions on the General wbb board

My bad! Thanks for pointing that out. I guess I would say, don’t resign her then! Regardless of how it happens, Arike should be playing somewhere else next season! Get some players who can play a team style of play.

If "team style of play" is important to you, why would you draft Lauren Betts? She makes Kara Wolters look like Nikola Jokic.

That trade could go down next offseason if the core designation is still apart of next season’s CBA, that way they could get at least some draft capital or younger players for a player like her (similar to how they did with Satou a year ago).

With at least 63 losses over two years, Dallas secures the highest odds for the #1 pick in the 2026 draft.

At this point, Dallas discussions would naturally gravitate to what would Curt Miller do?
Could he emulate the Valkyrie’s really remarkable example in the 2026 league reset?
  • (1) Who, besides Paige and Maddie, are the 6 players (a) Dallas needs to protect in the expansion draft?
  • (2) Is Arike a core-protect-sign-and-trade player? If she is, who should Dallas trade her for?
  • (3) Who does Dallas draft (c) in the 2026 WNBA draft?
  • (4) Will the new CBA alter the WNBA prioritization rule and make available players like Awak Kuier, Lou LS and Emma Meesseman?
  • (5) Who are the non-sticky and gettable, immediately impactful veterans (b) that Dallas should target and at what positions?
  • (6) Who are the non-free agent unprotected players (a) that Dallas hopes the expansion team doesn’t draft and Dallas hopes to keep?
  • (7) And what about Koclanes?

This was mentioned in Post #25 as something to consider well. I personally think it is very ironic that we read so many negative comments here on the Boneyard about Ogunbowale, and yet we also would consider a scenario in which the Wings would make an arbitration argument that she is so essential to the franchise, that she basically IS THE FRANCHISE, and as such it would be such a hardship that the WNBA is required to void her free agency. In doing so, force her to resign a contract with the Wings, and for no other reason than to hopefully trade her for some draft choice?

Here is the thing, EVERY veteran player is a free agent next season (I guess with the exception of those who may be Cored). So, given that there will be so many on the market, why would any other program want to trade for Arike, when they might simply be able to negotiate with one of the eighty or so other free agents? What kind of trade value would she really carry? And what if there are no other teams willing to trade anything, what then?

This is a first year head coach. I don't believe that he is very good at the X's and O's of the game; he is just not a very experienced tactician in these regards. Is he getting better? I don't know that he is, but possibly. In the past month he has been struggling to field enough players from the injury list to simply not forfeit the games, so it makes things really hard to judge. The team is losing a lot, but they are competitive in every single loss, just do not have the grit to get it across the finish line.

Is he respected by the players?
Is he an asset for the players?
Is he an asset for the program?
Is he going to continue to improve?

I just don't know enough about him to have an informed opinion.

Who does Dallas draft (c) in the 2026 WNBA draft?

When is the draft?
When is the CBA going to be over, allowing for teams to start negotiating with all of the eighty some odd free agents?

Which comes first - the chicken or the egg?

She's a player I'd like to see play in the WNBA again. It would be interesting to see her back in the WNBA on a roster that was better suited to her skillset.
