They’ll all be on the court tonight when the Wings play the Fever

Azzi's first 2 WNBA buckets:

- mid range jumper off the dribble

- drive to the basket for layup.

Note these are the skills she is not supposed to have, according to pundits. 🤔
Pundits are supposed to be learned, expert people commenting on a subject. People that think she doesn’t have those skills have no idea what they’re seeing.

Watched the preseason game against Indy and the first half definitely didn't feel like preseason which made it more entertaining.

That said, I expect Azzi's first impact to be the space she's going to create for others because of how much they respect her outside shooting. She'll find her footing and definitely play like a top pick by midseason.

Also, Dallas is going to be MUCHHHHHH better this season. I'm guessing at least a 6-8 win improvement this season, minimum.

And keep in mind, even though the Fever were missing Boston and Hull, the Wings didn't have Arike, Shepard and Kuier.
One more thing, Smith (once everyone gets used to where teammates are moving to on the court) is going to be a great asset as a facilitator.

For a preseason matchup that was one entertaining game. Dallas and IN will both be fun to watch this season. While Paige & Azzi were the headliners for the Wings, a number of players impressed. Yueru looks much fitter and more active. Siegrist & James were both more agressive in looking for their shot. Overall the Wings played much better defense and their rebounding was considerably better than last year. Obviously, Jose has already made an impact.

Without Arike, Shepard & Kuier, Boston, Hull, etc., one of the reasons the game was so competitive is that many players are fighting for a job as some of them will not make the final roster. For instance, one of the final spots on the Wings might come down to veteran Lindsay Allen or Grace Berger. I think it’s good that the W now has room for 2 developmental spots along with a 12 player roster.

Fever: one #1. Bad team
Two # 1s. Playoff.

Wings: one #1. Bad team
Two -#1s. ?????????

Actually, the Fever were still pretty inept the first half of the first season with Boston and Clark but came on after the all star break. I think Bueckers and Fudd won’t need that transition period due to their experience of playing together.

Wonder if having four consecutive #1s (the last four) facing off in a WNBA game has ever happened before? Paige & Clark might have put up some serious numbers if they both had played 35 minutes. They are both tremendous players!
Vegas vs Seattle in 2020 would’ve featured 5 straight #1 picks (2015-2019 all of the top picks went to those 2 franchises)

I think most feel Jazzy Davidson is the favorite for 2029 but I’d put Blanca/Makeer in the mix. Long way to go.
At this point it’s obviously a guessing game but I’d put my money on Blanca or Lil Sis Betts. Makeer is looking good as well though I’m unsure how Dawn is going to keep all those wings/forwards happy? Jazzy is obviously very good but I’m not convinced things are going to be quite as peachy for her when JuJu and Saniyah are on the court with her. Finally, who knows what’s going to happen with Chavez? I do think it’s going to be a very interesting season next year!

Wings fans are liking Jose Fernandez (friend of Geno’s and certified good guy)

Kris Koclanes was a terrible choice as a HC. Curt Miller is lucky he didn’t also lose his job at the end of last season. In Jose Fernandez, the Wings have an excellent, experienced coach who knows basketball and is not afraid to yell at his star players when necessary. Paige, Siegrist, James, Yueru and the other returning players from last season must be ecstatic that they finally have a HC who will put them in position to win games.

I think Azzi should have played more minutes
Jose is well aware that rookies to the W, particularly those that played big minutes deep into the NCAA tournament have load management issues jumping immediately from a long college season right into the pro season. Last year, the Wings were hyper focused on managing Paige’s minutes. The same will be true for Azzi this season.

Azzi’s PT will gradually increase as the season gets rolling. But the last thing Jose or any coach in the W wants to do is push a rookie’s minutes to the point where they suffer a serious injury.

I also don’t think the wings should feel pressure to start Azzi right away just because she is the number one overall pick. Arike/Azzi/Paige. Not sure about that starting backcourt. I would probably prefer to start either Maddy or Awak initially.

Azzi is a perfectionist. That's part of what makes her great. Sometimes, however, I think it can make her too tight, playing not to make a mistake. Unsurprisingly, it looked to me like she was a little tight in her first WNBA game. When she gets used to the speed of the game in the physicality, she will be fine.

And Honorary Husky Maddy Siegrist had a good game. (Honorary because she was Lou’s bff when they were both rookies on the Wings). I hope Jose gives her more minutes than the previous coach

Siegrist has always looked good to me in any WNBA games I've watched. I like the core of this Dallas team.

James seems very talented, but there were times when she should have given up the ball. Now often, she made her shot anyway, but there were better plays on the floor. That will come.
