Dallas FF venue thought

I know this point may be over-exaggerated, but is anyone as concerned as I am about the possibility of our team shooting poorly as a result of the HUGE open venue of the Final4? There's always talk about how some Final4 venues can be tough to shoot in because there not being a back-drop behind the hoops for added depth perception when shooting.

In past years, we were not heavily reliant on the 3-ball. This year, our team is highly reliant on hitting our jump shots/free throws. I hope the open arena doesn't have an impact on our shooting percentages. I would definitely say it impacted Butler in 2011 (they were heavily reliant on the jumpshot, and we protected the rim well). Have we played in any arena that is comparable to Dallas stadium this year?

Both teams are defensively oriented. Add to this the odd venue, and it's almost certainly going to be a low scoring brick fest. I hope they stack a few more bricks than we do.

Louisville and Michigan were a little less than 50% from three in the national championship game last year. Butler built a house because they were over-matched and couldn't handle the moment.

Not playing Cuse this year we have not played in a dome all year.

Florida played in the SEC tournament at the Georgia Dome(i think)

I recall JC said during the 2011 run, that it is not the background or wide open space that causes poor shooting, it is the fact that the baskets are only used a few times per year. I think in Houston, the baskets had been used for a total of about 5 games before the final four, and that baskets are not broken in and are stiff and its tough to score except for lay-ups and dunks. JC would change his strategy for games in arenas like this and basically let teams chuck threes and emphasise that we had to defend the lane.

I am sure he has imparted this wisdom to KO, so we'll see what happens.

Florida actually played at Jerry World last year in South Regional and in the two games shot 6-25 from 3

I was at the FF in 2009 which was played in a similar venue (Ford Field). The pro- Michigan State crowd of 72k + was what swayed the game in their favor IMO, but our guards did struggle badly. AJ & Kemba shot a combined 6-29 and Kemba was 3-9 from the line.

That team was much more post-oriented and a horrible FT shooting team compared to this year's squad, though, so it's hard to use that game as an example. I doubt we would ever attempt only 6 3's or shoot 63% from the line even if the game was played in the Boeing Everett factory.

The atmosphere seems to play a bigger role than the arena dynamics, and luckily we don't have to play a true away game like in 09. A few guys might struggle early on but overall it shouldn't be an issue.

Lighting can be an issue, but for last year's regional it looks like they kept it fairly dark in the stands, which should help the shooters. Michigan shot 49% and Kansas shot 55% from the field.

I imagine it would be almost impossible not to watch on that giant screen for some 90% of the seats in there.

Interesting fact: The only other screen that large is the one on the opposite side. They have two different feeds so that each side is watching a screen that represents their view of the court, and neither side has to deal with having the reverse angle on the screen.

All the Final Four venues are terribly large. That's why you have to work your a ss off to get decent seats in the lower bowl.

Tampa and San Antonio are actually small by today's standards, but even there there are tons of seats that you can't believe they sell. Going to the shoot-around on Friday gives you a great chance to check out the venue and see what seats are minimally acceptable.

Monday's ticket is easy peasy no matter who the match-up is. I walked into our last two National Championship games with an extra unused ticket in my pocket each time because the most I could get for it was $10 and I would rather have the souvenir at that point.

I went to a football game there, with great seats, and it was still very difficult to not look up at the screen all the time.

The game I went to JPP blocked a FG to put the Giants into the playoffs and a miracle run to another SB. Hopefully my luck there continues.
