Casey will be number 2 and the 3 freshman will red shirt. Nice compliments, but they have a long way to go to catch him.

I realize these are all opinions based on nothing.....but you seem to be confident about this. May I ask why?

I think Cochran will likely start the year as the backup quarterback. As I posted previoulsy, that does not mean that he will be the starter if something happens to cause us to make a change at quarterback for a long stretch of games.

I know fans hate the QB rotation and some still cry in their pillow at night over Nebrich burning his RS (as if he couldn't sit another year over the next 4), but I would not be the least surprised to see 2 and maybe even 3 QBs playing early. Whitmer had the concussion issue last year, and the "he got his bell rung" reaction to hits we heard in years past is now verboten, so I would assume the staff will try and get the young kid(s) some experience early, just in case it is needed later.

It is highly unlikely that any freshman, no matter how good, can overtake a kid who by all accounts is having a great camp himself. This is not a Nebrich situation here. Casey has proven competent and I feel that the only way he can lose the backup role is, should Whitmer get hurt, not to produce in real games.

I think that as the season progresses, any one of the freshman could overtake Casey, but not after 15-20 practices. So by the Louisville game it could happen.

Does Cochran transfer maybe? Hate to see it but depth chart is deep and Lagow seems to be the real McCoy.

Well I agree with this post, but it contradicts your prior one.

That won't happen. Just won't. Not to say if we're up 35-3 over Michigan with 3 minutes to play Cochran won't come in to hand off to Hyppolite for the final drive. But no coach is going to throw a backup in just to get him some experience in case the starter goes down. And no way in hell will one of the true frosh go in "just to get some experience."

1) As Jimmy said, way too early to speculate on Cochran transferring. He is a Redshirt Freshman who, besides the starter, has the most experience with the offense and was a state champion QB to boot (Before you start on the former, both Coach Pasqualoni and Weist have stated that the terminology and definitions there of are 70% the same as last year).

2) What do you base Lagow being the real McCoy on? I'm not trying to imply that he is not what you say, but he has exactly zero game day experience at the college level. The exact same amount as the other 3 back-ups.

Des is a hack. Dont trust a word out of his mouth. He is an Orange fan reporting on UConn for starters. He doesnt give 2 poo's
This is really funny. Some fans complain about Des for not being critical enough of the program, thus being too pro-UConn. Others don't like that he went to Cuse (which happens to be one of the main schools for sports journalism along with Northwestern and Mizzou) and therefore he must have an anti-UConn bias. If the boneyard could decide which one it is, it would make things a lot easier.

Whitmer is only a rising Junior ... right?

I wish someone else had gotten minutes last year; that would make me feel better right now. No one did. QB is a really tough position at this level. If Cochran, Lagow and Boyle are all solid ... you are still going to have a lot of feelings that they aren't getting a chance. But, in sports, things happen. I hope we have the best Production since the kid from Shelton left. That would be great to see. And at least 2 years of it.

I wouldn't sweat it too much. Very few college teams have two QB's with significant (or any) game experience.
Cochran is in his third year on the team and his third year with this system. That's as much as Bama, Ohio St, Oregon or most any team have.

From what I have heard Whitmer will begin the year as a starter but not necessarily finish as a starter. I expect Boyle to be the number 2 QB (and eventually be the starter) and for Lagow to redshirt. I also don't think Cochran cares too much about riding the bench.

Isn't Cochran a Sophomore (RSFr)?

Why do you think Cochran doesn't care if he rides the bench? Upon what do you base this statement? I would think he wants to play as badly as the rest of the backups. I hope so at least.

If Whitmer was hurt tomorrow it would be Casey and Casey would start the first game. Over time anything can happen.

Unless your statements are pure opinion or speculation they raise several questions.
1. what are your sources?
2. under what circumstances, other than injury, would one of the freshman QBs (including Cochran) replace Whitmer mid-season? if the answer is poor performance by Whitmer, then I question whether a QB who has no game experience would do any better than Whitmer, especially with our schedule this year. I think it would take a series of major screw ups for that to happen.
3. and as Husky25 asked, how can Cochran not care about riding the bench? did you possibly mean he wouldn't accept riding the bench (i.e. would look to transfer)?

Curious minds want to know.

Well my brother goes to Uconn and is from Xavier. He talks too Graham Stewart and Tim Boyle. He also talks with Sean Mcquillan quite often as his friend was dating Mcquillan. He also, believe it or not, is friends with Smallwood as they took a summer class together. None of my statements are necessarily true, but from the four players he knows on the football team that is what he heard. And with Cochran, I think he is at Uconn for school as much as football and although he probably does not like riding the bench, it won't cause him to transfer. So as I said I can't guarantee anything I said is true, but I hope this clears things up for you.
Thanks. Very interesting. I'll leave it at that for now. In the end, I trust the coaches will make player decisions based on who they think will give the team the best chance to win.

My bother's friend's wife is related to PP's distant cousin who is sure that Lagow will be the starter.

Honestly, I am now sure that Boyle will red-shirt.

Totally! And next year it's game on so don't anyone get too up or down until that chance comes. We're in for a treat it seems but give the newbies a year of seasoning if possible. These guys could have the tools like we haven't seen.

Thanks for the insight. But you might wish to err on the side of vague next time you decide to be forthcoming. Sources might appreciate a little anonymity. Just sayin'.
