At least in the 1920s there was no national championship tournament and Syracuse did win the Helms title.

The Helms Athletic Foundation was founded in 1936, and they basically went through and looked at stats to pick a champion in the prior years. Considering Syracuse's two Helms Titles come from 1918 (16-1...18 years before Helms was founded) and 1926 (19-1...10 years before), it's not likely they were even picked by people who saw their team play.

Well perhaps I gave Syracuse more credit that it deserves then. I didn't know that. But I'd still say its less douchey than raising a banner for #1 in the Sargin ratings after losing the national championship. Then again when it comes to douchiness, Duke >everyone else, even Syracuse.

Speaking of the Sagarin ratings. Syracuse never made it to number one in that system. In fact they never cracked the top five even though they were 25-0. Too may close games, I guess. Now after the loss to BC, they have dropped back to #11.
