Mercy has been producing Div I girls basketball players for years. It’s a terrific program

I remember the old days of the HCC with Northwest/East/South Catholic, Aquinas, St Paul, Xavier/Mercy. NW & South were the gbb powers then.

Now South & Aquinas are gone, St Paul is struggling, and Xavier/Mercy have reoriented south.

Consolidation, financial, attendance, issues. Some good education and sports may be gone forever.

St. Paul is NOT struggling. Coach Mone has the best team in the Naugatuck Valley League. Last time I checked they were the No. 3 seed in Class S Tournament.

Was referring to the school. Has come to closing a few times and enrollment is <500.

I would guess that enrollment is being helped by the presence of ESPN.

From what I have read at this time St. Paul has a larger number of students then other local high schools in the area. I know that they have more than Holy Cross and Sacred Heart.

1) Ok, so they're all struggling.
2) CIAC website has enrollment. St Paul = 460. Holy Cross = 443. Sacred Heart = 352.

This is great news as the rules in place in CT fall short of those in other states which has put a stranglehold on CT developing D1 talent over the years. To the best of my knowledge the last lady to land a 'big time' D1 scholarship was from RHAM, playing BB at St. Joe's in Philly.

Lots of very good girls hoops playoffs going on right now. Conference playoffs ending and States starting Monday.
