Crystal Dangerfield and the Jordan Brand Classic

I thought Dangerfield pushed the ball well at times and does have good court vision. Also think she'll be a pretty good 3 point shooter. However, I noticed two things she'll need to improve before she's an impact player. One, she's kind of casual with her passing and will learn quickly that it's very difficult to pass THROUGH an aggressive defense and will have to learn and use an aggressive skip pass. And two, that turn and follow defense isn't going to fly with Auriemma. She'll need to move her feet, go over screens and stay in front of her man. But if she's as dedicated as she seems she'll rise to the competition and be hungry to earn a spot in the rotation.

UConn does not teach "go over screens"... they teach go under screens and for the other UConn player to back away so the defending UConn player can go under with ease and not cause a log-jam

On pick and pops, if you don't go over, shooters like C. Williams will drain 3s all night. On non-shooters you can go under.

One player isnt enough for UConn (Jefferson) to change their style on how they defend.

Thats why a lot of team get hot on 3's against UConn, but the other team also has to defend and not turn the ball over

I'm pretty sure. Mo is probably at least 1"-1.5" taller. CD is listed at 5'6". I think that's generous. But she has hops--not like Mo, as far as I can tell--and speed. She also has a VERY polished offensive game for her age. CD has more muscle than Mo had at that age.

Regarding Crystal's uniform number, I would think #2 would be fitting (half of Moriah, to avoid setting expectations too high). On the other hand, wearing #5 would be a way for Crystal Dangerfield to pay homage to CD2.

Regarding how UConn handles screens when on defense, what I observe most often is "switch on screens". The person guarding the screener switches to guard the ball handler, and the one previously guarding the ball handler guards the screener. That worked in the recent past because all five players were versatile enough to defend anybody, so they didn't have to worry too much about mismatches. Still, I always thought UConn would be vulnerable to a team that made a conscious effort to create mismatches, but opponents never seemed to do that.

At least when Natalie is not on the floor, that will continue to be true next year. I wonder if the past year's pattern will continue insofar as Natalie being on the floor will necessitate a zone defense.

I look at it like that too Mike. Pretty much the same to me. The problem I see is that when that screen is set, usually at the top of the key or just to one side at the 3 point line, the screen defender is usually playing 3-4 feet off the screener. If the ball defender doesn't get over or fight through that screen, a good shooter comes off it and has wide open 3's because the screen defender isn't jumping up.

not to me, going over is chasing behind the player... watch Jefferson, she's very rarely chasing behind (going around) a pick, her teammate normally backs away so she could slide thru. Take the jumper if you wish but you're not blowing by for a lay-up.

Ive noticed this for a long time, well atleast from when Renee was defending.

Do they go over, sure.... but thats because UConn's post (Stokes) didnt back away, playing tight man to man and isnt focused on what they should be doing at the time. #communication

How many times have we seen Moriah "stuck" between players... cause she was taught to go under, she's a great student, listener and defender.

thats why ND knocked down so many 3's... thats the gamble you take, and you hope that they cool off in the 2nd half which they normally do. plus the other time must play defense against UConn as well.

The national awards are fractured because there is no clear #1 player in this class. The voters for these awards are national panels, so there shouldn't be a regional bias. If there was, it was Midwest, as Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana took three of the 4 biggies, despite the fact that there is a huge amount of talent in Texas (which garnered only a single NPOY award).
