As the regular season winds down, the parity across the spectrum of WCBB is remarkable. WIth no clear #1, a packed 1-10 and a I don't want to play them 10-20, it looks like the excitement and jostling for seeding will continue with the conference championships.

It looks like the differences come down more to coaching talent than athletes in the top-20. And there's a lot of great coaches out there.

Are there?

Geno, Kim, Dawn and Brenda have the only championships. Is Brenda great? She's good.

Vic, Jeff and Adia have been runnerups but I can't call Adia "Great" after one post covid year and the disappointments of this year,

Final Four level? Wes Moore is good and has been this decade. But great? Gottlieb?

Has anybody else gotten to a high level?

Not saying others can't attain a level f greatness in the future.

Definitely. Two words. Coaching and motivation. I boil the coaches down to Geno, Dawn and Kim. If these teams are to win it all, it wi8ll have to be a masterful coaching 40 minutes, I pick Geno. GO HUSKIES!!!!!!

I'm not talking about NC winners or tournament achievements. That's too narrow a measure for what I have in mind. I'm talking about coaches who are building programs, who are teachers, and there's a quite a few of them. Take Kristy Curry at Alabama for example, or Nicki Collen at Baylor, and yes, Courtney Banghart at UNC, Kenny Brooks at UK, Kevin McGuff at tOSU, Kim Caldwell at Tennessee, and Jim Flanery at Creighton. And don't forget Shea at Vandy. These are great coaches who've been building programs and reputations for their schools, and helping their players grow in all sorts of ways. These are all teams that are capable of pulling off an upset in the tournament.

And I'd include Lindsay Gottleib in this list. I didn't really see it until this season, because last season USC depended so much on Juju that I couldn't tell how much the coach actually contributed. But she's been recruiting effectively, and she's been a teacher as well if you consider how she's given her freshmen lots of minutes and built their confidence -- look at Avery Howell as a case in point. And she's built a credible NC contender this year.

Geno has the best players and usually does go how much is coaching and how much is recruiting? Dawn has clearly had the best bigs since Aja along with a great supporting group and has only won three times, is she a great coach or recruiter? Vic has always done a lot with the least amount of talent but at Texas he has gotten better players so maybe he is a great coach.

My point is in WCBB the top four programs get the lions share of the top recruits and that makes them hard to beat consistently. Some teams celebrate when they get a top 25 player while UConn may not have one player that would be less than that on their entire roster. So what is my point? Parity really doesn't exist in WCBB and if you aren't one of the top 7 teams in the country you have next to zero chance of making the Finals.

Just asking, when did Brenda win her national championship? from my recollection I would say never.

I think there's a big difference between "rising"and "great." Excellent can be anticipated. GREAT must be proven.

Yes, Lindsey is a very effective recruiter and teacher, but the great ones also add effective Xs and Os with excellent gametime decisionmaking and ability to handle the pressure in the final four. She has been there. This latter factor is what I question about Cori and Neile at this time. I fear that Vic may be the next one to become "great."

Normally, I'm all for splitting hairs...

Am I the only one who thinks Charlie has a bit of a man crush on Geno?
