Creighton Postgame Thread

It seemed odd to me how after Renee said during the first quarter that it looked to her that the refs were letting them play, the refs seemed to start calling more fouls.
Can't remember any recent games where 2 starters had 4 and another had 3.
And the refs have definitely been made aware of Serah's "tendency" to be in the lane too long. What's it been, 3 or 4 games in a row where she has been in the lane too long?
Glad to see Caroline play a good game...scoring, rebounds, and two blocks!

I noticed that too. The refs started calling ticky-tack fouls on UConn’s press that were off the ball and really should have been ignored.

few thoughts:
*Jim F. is a very good coach and as long as he can keep those players in Creighton, they will be very dangerous in 2 seasons or so. Wish he could get a real good post player which will make them a real contender in the top 25...
*Sarah did a lot of Sarah's things. she is amazing in how she does everything well. The only down point for Sarah were the fouls...not that important in this game but against a top 5 team, we'll need her on the court for 35-40 min.
*Azzi had a very quiet game with some puzzling turnovers and some turnover to her teammates because she didn't complete some routs (to where the pass went)
*Blanca is something else...she enters the game a lot of things happen (some bad but a lot of really good). was happy she hit the last 3 she took as she missed about 5-6 in a row (if I'm not mistaken) over the last 2-3 games.
*KK didn't have one of her better games.
*K9 on the other hand, had a real good game. those 3's, the incredible hustle, and she is a real good rebounder for her size.
*Serah stated very well and couldn't sustain it. i was encouraged by her guarding players at the top of the key but 4 fouls are not good.
*Shade: what happened to her mid-range game. She used to be very accurate but seems that she lost in. She hits 3 pointers which is great.
*CD: her best game this season with very productive 9 min. she scored, she rebounded, she played defense. Hopefully she can build on that.
*The refs were a bit too whistle happy for my taste.
All in all, despite the way to many turnovers for UConn, the amazing defense that UConn plays, made it a blowout.
On to play Villanova who can give (maybe) a closer game to UConn.

Renee came up with a new moniker which was apparently suggested by her social media followers. When Sarah Strong made a great play (an and-1), Renee called it a "Sarah-mony".

Beware, we may have to get dressed up for future Sarah-monies at Gampel or People's Bank.

Before long, we may even see some Serah-monies. I wonder if those will require an invitation?
Which would require us to bring tiaras to wear and little starry wands to wave? I'm good with that.

Three top ten teams lost today. Texas, Maryland, & Oklahoma were defeated with the Longhorns suffering their 1st defeat. This should silence the debate of Texas or UCONN as the #1 ranked team.
UCONN, Vanderbilt, & Texas Tech are now the only undefeated teams in WBB.

This game was the first game that my wife watched with me, ever. At half time she told me that she felt so bad for Creighton that she couldn't watch anymore.
Can I recommend something? Try to convince her that not everything is about winning and losing if you aren't really projected to be the among the best any way. Can you imagine if you had a daughter who was a good but not a great player or a best friend's daughter or even a close friend work colleague that had played against an all-time great; would the conversation be all about whether that person won or how many they lost by?

I had an opportunity to go against a college all-American, Olympic gold medal Winer, and played in the NBA for many years. He destroyed me and it was one of my highlights just as a high school player. It was an honor. I'd be very surprised if Creighton felt any other way. They said it was a rebuilding season for them. Now if this was Texas, that would be different because it would mean more likely they quit.

And for any senior as an example - they may have a child that's watching Sarah Strong and Blanca Quinonez in the WNBA and could tell their kid they played against them in college. And maybe they'd have a story that they blocked a shot of Sarahs or stiole some passes or hit some jumpers over them etc.

It's not all about wins and losses for some teams and some players. school is more important for many. Anything else it's an honor.

Yeah the whole debate of who is #1 is on the back burner, for now. I will have to watch that Texas game later tonight.

Wow. Oklahoma lost another one? Maryland losing is not too surprising. On any given day anyone can get got. I rather take a loss now than in the Big Tournament. I will be watching that game as well.

No one has posted this??

I thought I heard someone say a game or so ago, that Serah "thought" that the count starts over if she is passed the ball. What is the rule there?

My understanding is: an offensive player cannot be in the lane for longer than 3 seconds ....unless the player is making a drive to the basket or makes an attempt to score. There is no 3-sec in that case. I believe, logically, that the count starts again after a drive or attempt to score is aborted.

It was interesting that coach Flanery pointed out that UConn has different presses.

UConn was in a man-to-man press in the first quarter, which Creighton handled not too badly. But Geno switched to a zone press in the second quarter, which suffocated Creighton.

Flanery further said that Geno was "nice" by backing off the zone press in the second half; otherwise, the margin would have been even bigger.

I just find Caroline so inspiring. After all she has been through. I'm sure she had a whole different plan for her UConn career.

She comes out and organizes the kids as the coach on the floor and then packs the stats in less than 10 minutes.

I really hope her body lets her continue to build out her minutes now that the scoring is coming back.

This was not the first game to show that, unless the game is completely out of hand, either KK or K9, or both, need to be on the floor. The only real point guards and so quick and tenacious on D.

In a more immediate sense, Notre Dame and Villanova played very well today (& Notre Dame might have snuck back in to the top 25), so, given UCONN'S recent ball control issues, this could be a very interesting next 8 days. I know this game will give the coaching staff a lot of teachable moments on video.
Today's game showed just how dominant Sarah can be (I know, when isn't she).
Azzi was low-key Azzi.
Serah was Dr Jekyll and Ms Hyde.
K-9 was impressive: aggressive & efficient.
Aside from her rocky 1st couple of minutes, Blanca was great.
Caroline was mobile, physical and saw some shots drop.
Creighton was so much better than their previous game (Flanery has his youngsters moving in the right direction), and Zedicker is very impressive.
Creighton played Marquette late last week. They made Creighton look like a mid-level D3 team. They will be a good team when the freshmen get older but, now they are not good.
