If we're doing the regional stereotyping thing, Midwesterners are probably the most authentic and definitely the nicest people I've met. If you're looking for authenticity, don't move to the South (having gone to school / lived / worked down there and I wasn't even in the deep South). Anyway, McDermott comes across as a genuinely good guy to me.

For 32 minutes they played well enough to beat anyone, they lost because 32 minutes isn't enough against the teams you need to beat to win championships, even teams as soft as Creighton.
What I liked:
Hassan and Mahaney putting a priority on getting the ball to the scorers, even if they are given the lane.
Mahaney looking like he belonged. Passed the eye test like we haven't seen before. Big key during the comeback run on both ends.
Samson and Reed staying out of foul trouble and defending Kalk about as well as can be done.
Reed in the post. He can be trusted with getting the ball more than his has been getting it.
Ball mixing in the midrange game, another guy who needs more shots.
McNeeley taking charge on the floor and in the huddle
The team taking it to the opponent with AK on the bench in (dubious) foul trouble.
The defense in the 2nd half.
What I didn't like:
75% in the first half. None gets that hot if you are playing defense.
McNeeley not kicking it out 3 or 4 times to get a better shot.
AK and Johnson's rebounding, he should be getting more if he's going to play 20 minutes a game.
AK's fouls, thought half of them were soft calls. Also 0 for 3 from deep and 0 for 0 from the FT line
Not getting to the foul line enough in general.
The two blown out of bounds calls that let Crieghton off the mat. It was at least a 6 point swing.
Hurley not adjusting to defend Green soon enough.
Hurley not going inside to Reed soon enough or often enough to relieve their pressure outside.

Huh? It's a top 15 offense in the country. That is with a simplified approach because we do not have the correct players to run the full system. Defense is and has been the issue this year. McNeeley was getting cooked by Neal to start the game. Really on Creighton recognized that and went to a Neal ISO for a few straight possessions. We will need the defense to step up the intensity and the 5 man switch scheme has worked better recently. We need to finish at the rim and hit open shots, they offensive system is what is providing those looks, we just did not capitalize.

Referee-ing is not a good reason to leave the conference especially if one thinks Hurley is the issue. He's getting better treatment when he's the new guy in the conference?! Unlikely.
The BE refs were troublesome the prior two years when UConn had great teams yet it wasn't a problem come NCAA time. Definitely moving from more physical to less physical play made them better and arguably forging a toughness playing thru referee-ing made them better. Its been proven when UConn has a championship level team the BE works to harden the team to then go out and win the championship. The Huskies aren't championship level this year and that isn't the fault of the refs or the BE.

One shower thought I had this morning (for some reason still thinking about this game) - imagine if our players (and program) did not aspire to go to the NBA like Creighton, with guys sticking around well past the time they should to prop up a random Midwest school for some reason and playing against much younger guys and just to be an annoyance (lets be real they’re not winning anything). If that was UConn’s culture this year we’d still have Jordan Hawkins, Step Castle, and Clingan on the team and would be unstoppable.
