Tenn - Oklahoma

Thru 10 innings, 3 total hits, 0-0. Dominating pitching.
Tenn gets 4 hits and a 3 run HR against the player of the year. 3-0. It's over, right?
Okla gets a wind-aided error, and a hit after down to its last strike to miraculously tie game up.
Then they win in the 12th on just-inside-the-pole HR.

Wonderfully entertaining game.
Much more so than the Yankees or the NBA.

Funny, even though it was UTenn, there was an attractiveness and good feel about them and being real underdogs and competing so well...

Boring, surely not.

Safe.

But I think Yogi was right...Jackie was out.

It was a close play. If she is called out there the game is over and Tenn wins. Another game tonight lets see how it goes.

Oh, he's a troll about softball. In his world it's a dumbed-down version of Baseball Lite. He and I were arguing about it last week.

I missed the game, but it would be nice to see another more eastern school win; I think only Michigan has broken the monopoly of schools west of the Mississippi River.

Well, this is my 20th year in coaching, I believe - from Little League and town "Little Miss" softball, to summer travel teams and high school varsity. I just love the game - fast, strategic, changing, literally, pitch-by-pitch. It's not the same as baseball - the differences in the ball and the size of the infield require slightly different things. The game has given me much, much more than I've given it - enormous amount of time spent with my kids, mental and physical workouts, hours in the outdoors, travel to places I never would've been.

Didn't know you were so fond of those poison ivy infested back woods behind the dugouts of rural fields.

Safe.

But I think Yogi was right...Jackie was out.

As a 5-decade Dodger fan I would naturally go with the umpire's interpretation. Pictures often show Yogi crouched and waiting with ball as Jackie comes sliding in, but as you can see in the video, the tag is not applied in front of the plate but on top of it, so it looks to me that Jackie's toe got to the plate before the tag is applied.

And if it was a tie, as a former umpire coordinator I will remind you that a tie goes to .... however the umpire wants to call it.

But on the UTenn-OK call the picture doesn't tell much (though I finally figured out why the Brewers were scrimmaging the Institute of Cornish Studies last night). However the ESPN video for the game shows a play like the one pictured happening with a runner having already scored to make it 3-3 (though the on screen score still says 3-2) and the ump calling the runner out. So the same situation happened earlier too but the call went differently, though no mention of it in the recap.

Great action.

not exactly what I was thinking of - if I want poison ivy-infested woods, I can walk out my back door..if the snapping turtles don't get me first!:p

Ah, the Yogi hopping around movie. Robinson definitely looks out in this well-known clip, but there's a reverse angle shot (which I can’t find on line) that makes him look safe. My interest in this famous play has always been situational: As Jackie himself said after the game (which the Yankees won), “Why shouldn’t I go with Ford out there winding up?” My question exactly. Robinson may have been “old, fat, and gray” by 1955, but Ford was giving the the man who was still among the game’s best and most daring baserunners (and probably its longest lead-taker) at least a full second’s head start. Good grief.

That was an excellent softball game.

I would expect UConn fans to gravitate to rooting for Oklahoma, as I see a lot of similar (not the same) characteristics. Superior players, a superior "will to win", only 4 losses all year with 50% of the wins or so being blowouts, intent on erasing the bad taste of losing in the finals the previous year. Never mind y'all don't like Tennessee.

OTH, my wife and I have always liked Tennessee softball. But I doubt this is their year, as Oklahoma is very clearly the best team going.

Well I don't know about "troll". It was talked about in another thread and I brought up how I wonder why it exists when females could just as easily play baseball. (like basketball or soccer - no need to create something different) Nobody has been able to answer that. Probably because there is no answer other than the sexist "hardball" vs "softball".

But in this thread it was ThisJustIn who was taking the first shot across the bow. Wasn't trolling, just responding. ;)

ThisJustIn was just taking a shot at me. :D My brother coached a travel team for years down in Oklahoma (which is pretty good softball). I used to tease him about coaching softball, he teases me about watching women's basketball. Brothers.

WIt's not the same as baseball
Was exactly my point in why not just play baseball??? Madonna, Rosie and Geena all did. ;)

At this point softball is too ingrained in the culture -- women like playing it. Why would they switch just to be like the men? And women have their 'own' sport, and don't have to keep getting those tired old comparisons to men (she can pitch as fast/hard as he can, she can hit as many home runs as he can, etc etc).

Would it make you happier if they called it baseball?
Almost all women's sports have different rules than men's. (WNBA uses smaller ball, Lacrosse has lots of different rules, etc.) Softball is pretty close to baseball, except for the size of the ball and distance between bases.

Well no they wouldn't switch. More why did they ever start on the wrong foot? Basketball, soccer, track and field, lacrosse, swimming, etc.

Sure, now you can have the comparisons, they can't play baseball so they have to create something different for them. Basically supporters of softball are sexist.

Would it make you happier if they called it baseball?
Nooo, that would make it even sillier. It wouldn't even make me happier if they played baseball. It would just take away the sexist silliness of it.

And all the rules are to make it easier for women (pretty sexist if you ask me). Softball is something different than baseball, a different game. (just ask Pinot, he knows, he's been coaching for 20+ years)

So you're calling what Madonna does "playing baseball?"

This Girl Gone Wild video has a few stripes on the sleeves that may remind you of baseball a bit, but most umps would call her for a few balks here. Does remind me though of the last softball team I coached called Wild Thing, and our pitching was right out of Tim Robbins in Bull Durham.
