Didn't see it that way. ND shot better under pressure and made the shots when they had to. We didn't. That play the ran for Diggins near the end was a perfect clear out. ND's defense was pretty good when it mattered. We missed a ton of shots we shouldn't have, including the last, which was wide open. Good play, but bad execution. ND was better today.

UConn was missing shots because they were taking bad shots. They played well early in the 2nd half then lost their minds. But they lost the game in the first half when they were playing too fast, with terrible tempo and spacing. Dumb fouls also put ND on the free throw line way too often. All of that was UConn's doing.

OK, but ND still made the shots they had to, the stops they had to and UConn didn't. Geno was outcoached and UConn outplayed, IMO.

Right. UConn did a lot of dumb stuff and ND is good enough to make them pay.

But one of the things that distinguishes champion teams is the ability, when Plan A fails, to have a Plan B that works. When Stewart couldn't hit the wall of a barn with anything, there wasn't really a plan B. Today, if there was a Plan B, it only worked sporadically.

Got no impression that anyone beyond the first 7 could be relied on to major a huge difference. MoJeff remains a heart attack to watch, and Tuck , while getting decent minutes, was not wonderful. Stewart is, let's face it, in a major slump. Dolson and Faris, the two who have improved the most from last year, cannot do it all. Hartley and KML will be steady and reliable most of the time, though I remain skeptical about Hartley's defense when the chips are down (with justification in this game -- IMHO -- Do not leave her to guard Diggins all by herself late in the game. Just don't).

So ND has McBride, who is a wonder, and Diggins, who is just like last year. Ochonwa is good but not great. And the way UConn plays, ND's freshman three-point shooter, Mabry, gets easy looks and points and this Braker kid looks like a million bucks. This is not a recipe for UConn success.

I saw the winner of this game as which team played better when everyone's hair is set on fire. There are rugby scrums with less frenzied action.

I think Ice has correctly noted that Doty is, at present the glue that holds the team together and that others have't stepped up.
Bria as yet is not the commanding presence she was last year
Stewie is still learning how to play college ball.
KLM played a great and couragous game but can't and shouldn't have to do it by herself.
Kelly played a great defensive game but was not a commanding offensive presence.
Surprisingly for a #1, for many parts of the game, the team played undisciplined BB as many have said.
The underclassmen save KLM are not quite ready to step up.
And Marbrey was ready.
but the team still is likely to compete for the National championship when Geno gets the pieces together.
And
As I have repeatedly said: the game was lost on Monday night due to misplaced frugality.

These things happen when a team plays too few close games. Muffet knew she had the win during the time out. You could feel the panic and feel the fear. No, wait, that was me tearing at my flesh.

Good learning experience. They need some work on shot selection and the half court rotation to create inside position and shots. And nerves of steel. Sadly it doesn't mean all that much. Both teams will be top 5 seeds.

Sent from my Lumia 920 via Windows 8. Now bite me Apple Droids.

Notre Dame grasped the refs patterns quicker than we did, but we caught on at the end of the first half.
I think by the end both teams were allowed about the same licks.
Diggins gets so many calls because she penetrates and looks for them.
We don't have a player who does that.

4 player on uconn not named Buck scored 0 points and one is named Doty. Don't think you want that to be your glue player. 10 minutes and 0 points. I think Geno is rolling the dice with Stewie and keeping his fingers crossed. ND has a way of showing UCONN all of its short comings time and time again. Now it Genos time to fix it. We are 1 and 5 over two years. Nobody has ever owned UCONN like this in 20 years. Its starting to get embarrassing!

Did you notice that the one time in the game that UConn played representitive BB was in the early-mid stages of the 2nd half when Doty was running the team.

Stewie is going to be a dominant player in woman's BB; its just going to take time and in any case, there was no one better to put in.

Disagree, I thought they had some good open shots but just missed them especially at he end of the game.

As I feared, ND matched up very well with UCONN; and ND got the fouls they characteristically get. I didn't foresee as many missed layups as happened. That, to me, was the difference in this game.

I'm afraid ND still has uconn's number.

There's still an open path to a national championship. But it might have to go through ND and not just Baylor.

Heartbreak

I don't mind if the Huskies get beat but I hate it when they beat themselves.

Agree. UConn gets into the double bonus against ND and doesn't take advantage of it. They shot from outside late in the game with the lead and tons of time on the clock. They took open shots from outside because ND was giving them those shots.

Just poor situational awareness by the Huskies.

They missed many decent open shots.

Stewie needs to keep attacking the basket, not launching from 3 early in the shot clock. I really miss Stokes, she does a good solid job defensively and is very calm as she goes about her game.

Kelly played a great defensive game but was not a commanding offensive presence. I'm not sure of the definition of "commanding" but when one player gets raves and the other isn't commanding, I look at the figures as well as what I saw on TV

Two players - stats:

Minutes 39 40
Shots 4-15 4-11
Rebounds 6 11
Assists 5 7
Steals 4 5
Turnovers 7 1

My feeling is our troubles in the game were mainly caused by the good job ND did on defense. We gave ND problems too, just one problem too few. Congratulations to ND for the win. Well done. It was an exciting game, a good one for women's basketball. No excuses.

And they both shot 75% from the free throw line. Skylar just had 8 more attempts.

We rushed everything. ND took their time. That is the major difference from where I sat.

Totally agree. I understand the coaches do not want to get into a freshman's head so that she's afraid to take shots, but at some point you have to say to your freshman, "look, you can usually shoot 3s but if they're not going in, keep taking it to the basket." Even if she misses the layup and she sure missed some gimmes, she gets a chance to be fouled.

We played poorly, but I'd much rather lose in January than March. There's still a long way to go

Most of the time the team looked composed BB was on the floor. Just not enough. Doty only played 10, Why? BB was on the floor when we built our biggest lead. Time will tell if Geno can get the ship righted but Stewie has struggled for much of the last 3 games. We got Duke and Baylor coming up. Hope this changes in a hurry.

My final conclusion on this game after all the slicing, dicing and hand wringing - We need Kiah back ASAP!

In a one point loss, how big would a block or two have been, several more boards and denial of attempted ND dribble penetrations. She is incredibly important to this team in so many subtle ways!
