I disagree that the question had "nothing to do" or was "irrelevant" to Sarah's basketball play. CWS asked: "What is the content of your character as a competitor."
CWS was obviously asking what it is about Sarah's character that makes her such a competitor in UConn basketball games—a standard (softball) sports interview inquiry. My guess is that Sarah didn't understand, or couldn't immediately process, the stiltedness of a sentence with MLK's 63-year-old speech fragment, so she wisely declined to answer.
As mentioned, CWS had successfully used a similar interview question with Azzi Fudd earlier in the day.
