NOTE: The headline is intended to be in good fun, and not malicious in anyway.

Tonight in Bristol, TN Trevor Bayne (The kid who the Daytona 500 last year) is from Knoxville and drove an orange "We Back Pat" car in honor of Pat Summitt. Pat Summitt was there with a bunch of supporters and gave the command to start the engines.

That orange car started the race on the front row and ESPN didn't miss the irony that the other car on the front row was driven by an Italian kid from Connecticut, Joey Logano. When it was pointed out to Logano before the race he joked about having to do his thing for UConn.

Logano ended up winning the race, while Trevor Bayne crashed the 'We Back Pat" towards the end of the race in accident that wasn't really his fault. It seemed like a very nice deal for both Pat and the foundation. She seemed to be enjoying herself. You could see drivers jumping out of their seats to go have a picture taken with her before the race, but you have to get a chuckle out of the odds of the one driver from Connecticut who happens to be Italian starting next to her sponsored car and then going on to win the race in the state of Tennessee.

Cool idea re the car and great for Pat.
But got to love the irony!

They need a rematch on Geno... errr ... Joey's home course at Limerock. Too bad Paul Newman isn't still alive he'd find some great way to support a charity race.

On Sundays (during the Sprint Cup races), Joey drives the Home Depot car.

Sounds like this mighta' been a Nationwide deal.

So, he probabaly dodged a bullet (and didn;t have to straddle his loyalties) :)

.
One great unanswered question: what color was Joey Logano's car?

This is stretching the irony bit I suppose but I find it interesting that the speedway in Tennessee is in Bristol, when Bristol, Connecticut is home for ESPN, the bete noire of many Lady Vol fans.

An update for my thousands of fellow Boneyard racecar fans<G>:

Joey was driving the Dollar General car (Yellow and Black BTW), so, the company being Memphis based, there's something for everybody in this win.:)

Agree the irony is funny. Great story tho and fun for Pat to be out and about being involved with other things...

I am a fan of Nascar road races other than that, meh.

Lime Rock not a great idea, Ice! The one time Joey raced there, in the NASCAR minor league event, (whatever they were calling Busch North that year:rolleyes:) Joey did NOT distinguish himself...Maybe Thompson or Stafford would better fill the bill!
