Yes but you said you don't care if we're a tournament team or not. We are UConn, and the second we are OK with not making the tournament is when we lose our brand as a top college basketball program. I agree that it's a lofty expectation but we can't just say "oh well" if we don't make it
And I don't care if we make it. Would love to - but that's not my expectation. I get no self-worth from myself in bragging to others about my favorite basketball team, so I'm not applying standards to anything. The team is what it is. 1. selfishly i'm not setting myself up like that I know better having watched this team for three years and 2. I have no idea what makes people think this is a tournament team. They've done their part to more and prove that they're not the last few years. 3. I don't think the freshmen are enough of an addition to make up enough of the difference to get us there. I hope i'm wrong - I just don't think this is the year you see us break out again. Next year? Well, that's going to be the year, I think.
If we can hold a core together the year after that? We're back on-line. Next year could be bonkers going back to the BE and all the scholys opening up and things lined up for a big jump forward.
This stuff takes time and it's hugely frustrating, but everything's lining up.
My timeline has always been:
Year-1: Hold it together, recruit well
Year-2: Step forward, develop youngsters, recruit well
Year-3: Produce results, transition recruits into consistent, every day players, recruit well
Year-4: Go time.
