I am newly enrolled and have enjoyed the discussion, but I have a few concerns and questions.

I have a concern or two about our recruiting discussions. Obviously, the fun is in comparing who could come and play at UConn. We each have a list of who we would like and probably an order of preference. We ought to be able to discuss our preferences with remarks like, player x has a better handle that y. Like physicians, we should pledge to do no harm. This forum is probably being read by prospective student athletes, their friends and families. I would want them to know that UConn has a huge, rabid and supportive fan base and not see themselves subject of devastating criticism.

I am uncomfortable with people who feel it necessary to put down a high school athlete. It is hard to gauge upside and that is KO’s job. I also think he is looking for character, intelligence and work ethic. I expect to see the players from 2012-13 come to play this year with improved skills. KO was a 4 year started because of work ethic. Kemba discovered the fruit of hard work and he is still at it. We would do well to be the school where kids come and overachieve. For the future, I think if Terrence Samuel, or a player like that, makes the NBA from UConn, KO’s and UConn’s allure increases.

A team of all-stars is not going to always win out. The beauty of basketball is that it is a team sport and chemistry is huge. Getting a one and done player to the league is not so big a deal. They just want to showcase (themselves) and the team may or may not be carried along by their skill.
People who list dream teams with 2 or more top players at each position are missing that too much depth for 200 minutes is also potentially a problem. Would coming to UConn really be attractive if you had to worry about having to transfer in 2 years with little playing time on your resume?

For example, guard prospects have to decide if Boatright and Calhoun are coming back. If they think so, why come to Storrs with the expectation that they will sit 3/4 of Calhoun, Purvis, Hamilton and Boatright? Samuels was uncommon because he values the jersey, but most PGs had to be wondering if Boat and Bazz would be back? Knowing the competition would be Bazz, Boat, Calhoun and Kromah would have chilled interest in most PG prospects.

That said, the first question I'd ask KO if I could is why true 4s and 5s are not signing up to play next year? Is it Nolan, Brimah and Facey? Who wouldn’t want a UConn uniform and their back to the basket with the cast already committed?

To answer your last question. Some prospective student athletes look at the totality of circumstances when evaluating a place to call home. The uniqueness of the student athlete can be determinative factor in a final decision (hoops being 1 variable). I don't think stating opposing opinions always lends itself to an adversarial communication.

There are a million and one characteristics and traits that make these prospects people. Singling out a few, however, and emphasizing their meaning (I am not saying you do this) is bound to leave us all with mistaken impressions. Take Abu for instance. If we knew nothing else about him other than that he paid schools compliments by saying "They'll be fine without me!" some of us might draw the conclusion that this was a backhanded way of saying, "Thanks but not thanks." Yet the kid could be the most hardworking, spirited, hungry for wins team leader that UConn has ever had. It's impossible to know. We rely on the coaching staff to make those judgments. There is actually such a thing as the UConn way: hard work, hustle, defense. But reading into the little-nothings of recruiting on message board is an incredibly simple (simpleton-y) thing to do. I do it myself (I did it the other day with Abu, and was quickly proven wrong).

I've said a couple times that I don't think PC fans should be posting in Abu threads, but UConn fans have sometimes been almost as bad in those threads. I also honestly don't trust your abilities to assess Snider over the many others who have watched him and even over Kevin Ollie who was the first coach to call him the day he decommitted.

While I agree with the original post and it was very well stated, I also doubt that "BLUEDOGHOUSE" or "mauconnfan" can say anything that would make kid's (or parents) feel unwanted or get the idea the fan base isn't 100% behind them when and if they don the National Flag Blue............

We are cyber-dopes with an opinion and I doubt anyone takes us as serious as we do sometime!!

Don't forget, Hamilton & Purvis, both signing on this spring, are true 5 star recruits. All the recruits who have, or will visit shortly, are either 4 or 5 star recruits.

If a kid is reading this forum and gets upset I don't want him for two reasons.
First he's just plain dumb to go to a site of fanatics and expect anything different than what you have observed here.
Second, should he venture here and not want to come to UConn based on what us idiots post he wouldn't be KO or Ricky Moore tough enough to fill their shoes. So I wouldn't want him.

Of course if he came here and handled the smack talk and accepted UConn I might overlook the first transgression!

Anyways I gave you a like because you state my preferences. I'm just realistic enough to realize that this place is what it is and have had a few more years of experience realizing the futility of reforming it.

Good points. To be honest Facey/Nolan/Brimah/Olander aren't NBA caliber at the moment. Younger recruits like Chukwu, Abu, Jahlil Okafor, Okonoboh, etc would probably have a good chance to start right away and build their own legacy.

fleudy not sure I wanted a lot of "Likes" for that statement!
And this one's for you mauconnfan:
@Goat it would be prudent to not belittle potential recruits, but is it fair game to go after the whiners who leave the program and throw it and the coach under the bus?

I am curious about the story behind the "SI 1999" reference now...

If a kid is reading this forum and gets upset I don't want him for two reasons.

Let me see if I understand:
- If some UConn fans disrespect a kid, he should still be eager to associate with UConn and its fans. The kid should embrace the fans despite their ill will.
- If a 5* basketball talent thinks ill of some UConn fans, you don't want UConn to associate with him. UConn should reject the kid because of his ill will.

Is that your view?

Personally, I think fans here are too negative, and I hope recruits don't let themselves be bothered by it, but you're kidding yourself if you think it doesn't happen. People want to be around others who like them and want to avoid those who dislike them. It's human nature.

Where have you seen that someone "hasn't liked" a kid? I'm curious because there's been very little said in a negative fashion on any recruits. Maybe a question of his handle or speed but that's what these boards are for.........all good!

You interpreted me incorrectly.

Read my last paragraph which states what I feel. It echoes the OP and you. Only difference is that I've been around long enough to know that people are very slow to change. The first stuff was tongue in cheek.

BTW there are relatives of recruits/players that come to these forums. COOSCOOS I believe is very close to Fuchs. Women's forum gets parents of players/recruits. Football forum gets them as well. Richard Lagow's dad went there and over the summer things turned really ugly. It mattered not that most of the posters tried to act civil. There were some that just couldn't restrain themselves. That is why I stated my tongue in cheek statement. A recruit or parent coming here without a thick skin would be foolish because people can't control themselves.

And you are most certainly correct about human nature. Very few of us, players or fans, are not bothered by negativity directed towards us.

Nonetheless if AO's dad came here I would politely write, no offense sir, but you are a mumu! Probably would eliminate the sir! And the no offense. And add a few things besides mumu!

While I can certainly understand how somebody would get that impression, I actually think this board is well-tempered relatively speaking. I'll occasionally post on the Philadelphia Eagles and Yankees message boards, and the negativity over there is suffocating. Granted, those are professional sports forums, and many of the topics of interest here are just teenage kids, so it's a bit of an apples to oranges comparison, but as a whole I rarely see anybody here get personal with a player. Positive re-enforcement is obviously somewhat of a necessity on a forum frequently visited by relatives of players - there is a fine line between pointing out the weaknesses of a player in a constructive fashion and flat out eviscerating them. We have some 's here, for sure, but collectively I think the player evaluations are fair and well-measured.
