Here are some worrisome stats about the current state of UConn Men's Basketball team. Which will last the rest of the season and which are aberrations are the matter of debate but they all seem to have the credence to last imo
Assist-to-FGM%: 46.3, 297th in the country (per KenPom). Last season was 43.8 which was an abhorrent 334th and validates what a joke the KO offense was. But this year's mark is still unacceptable, it is the second worst in the KenPom era for a UConn team. This group just use one ball screen, goes side to side, and then prays they'll create their own shot. The guards are talented enough for it to actually yield some results but still not optimal.
Opponent Free Throw Rate: 45.5%, 338th in the country, In conference 64.7, last. Are the refs bad? yes. But we clearly have had this problem all year and not made any adjustments, in fact, it's only gotten worse. Again, the refs are bad, but the way Hurley treats them will never get us a friendly whistle and I think that partly shows in this stat. (per KenPom)
Wings Shooting:
Tyler 3PT%: 33.3, FT%: 60.7 (which has shown to be predictive of three-point shooting because it is emblematic of form and touch)
Sid: 3PT%: 16.7, FT%: 56.2.
Yikes. Part of the allure of "small ball" is the the fact your four man can stretch the floor to open up driving lanes and the post. There performance is not gonna cut but Hurley has shown no willingness to go two bigs either so we may be stuck here
Alterique at the rim: (per HoopMath.com) AG is shooting 38.3% at the rim. That is the worst in HoopMath's archives for a UConn lead guard (it only goes back to 13-14 where Boat was the second worst at 46.8%). Boat also only took 29.9% of his shots at the rim, Gilbert takes 33.9. Whoof. He can penetrate with the best of them, but has a 4.7 foul drawn rate which is mediocre, and no finishing or getting to the line means it's really just a losing proposition there. I know he can't just grow, but that number has to come up.
Thoughts?
