Colorado State is expected to make UConn coach Jim Mora the school’s next head coach.

Total kick in the nads. Colorado state ? Has to be because he loves his home in Idaho.
I guess he wanted to get back West. Even though not much success in football, Their football facilities look pretty nice. With a new football stadium in 2017.

If the dude loves rural Idaho (and I don’t mean like Idaho is a rural state; I mean look at the town in Idaho he has his house), then he was always on borrowed time here from lifestyle and, likely, cultural standpoints. I never bothered to research the guy, and just hoped he could be a good football coach; but if that’s where he lives, he clearly likes the big wide open rugged country. That ain’t CT. Frankly, kind of a shock, knowing he’s from LA

Funny, actually; in looking that up, I learned the house by UConn he lived in is well documented as being haunted, and he and his wife experienced paranormal things frequently. What an odd fact/situation lol

I wish I could say I hate how phony college sports and coaches have become, but we’ve experienced this going back to Edsall 1.0

We need someone from the Northeast. And, of course, we need a conference. How many more years of solid football do we need to play to get an invite?

Jim Mora actually called Dave for the position. Prior to joining UConn, Jim’s coaching career was in the toilet. Jim revived UConn football but also revived his own career. I guess the rumors were true that he interviewed for the Washington state job last year and the Oregon State job this year. He always wanted to get a job out West again.

“And here comes Chip Kelly, new HC riding out to a sold out Rentschler Field on a motorcycle to take on the Leopards.”

Mora was never getting a P5 job, so we can stop with the Cal/Stanford nonsense. He’s in his mid-60s and hasn’t coached a power conference team in forever. Yes, he worked miracles for us, but to the rest of the country we are still UConn football. Anyone who isn’t an UConn fan will tell you we are only 9-3 because we play an easy schedule.

I don’t think CSU is an upgrade but as others have mentioned it’s closer to home and he’s now in a conference which may help with stability. I always thought he was going to go back west, given the fact he was in Idaho and not coaching at all when Benedict made the call. Going from Washington/California/Idaho to Storrs is definitely a cultural shock.

Coach Mora is a not only a football coach, but a leader. He completely turned this program around and we now have momentum for the first time since what, 2009/2010? He was brought in to stabilize the program, and I think we can all agree he did a fantastic job and probably exceeded all of our expectations. It was great having him here and I wish him nothing but success at CSU.

As for our next hire - just like with Coach Mora - we need a leader and not just an X’s and O’s guy. Don’t make the mistake of hiring some big shot Coordinator over a guy with head coaching experience who has proven results. If that means we need to look at a coach from FCS , then we should consider that. We need someone who knows how to win or who will embrace what Mora has done in terms of building a program.

I expected Mora to leave but Colorado State is shocking to me.

His son also went there and loves Fort Collins, which is an odd place to love.
Mora has no connection to Ft.Collins and Colorado St. His son Trey went to Colorado Boulder and was in SAE fraternity with my grandson. I was told by a "reliable source" (guess not--lol) that if (when) Jedd Fisch took the UCLA job, JM was penciled in at U Washington. I would totally understand that move--but Colo St is a head scratcher.
In the meantime, other than the obvious departures, we'll be losing several other key players to the portal. Look for our O line and other units to take a hit. Some significant coin is being offered by programs who have lots of it to spare.

This is a situation where keeping key personnel will really help. We have administrators that know the NIL landscape, but I’d love to keep one or two assistant coaches that know what’s going on.

We were so focused on Stanford or Cal, but Colorado State came from practically nowhere to really much things up. I'm shocked beyond belief at this development (the leaving was a possibility, but for CSU?!?!?!). Well, as I mentioned in other posts, our sky is about to become filled with fire and ash. This news is absolutely brutal, and that bowl we were hoping would get us to 10 wins is looking like lost cause...who among the key players are going to play when we've just lost the best coach we've had since RE1?

The only good thing is maybe he doesn’t take too many players with him because it’s COLORADO ST!!
I am concern he takes players with him. Every head coach does that. Colorado State does have a path to CFP and a nice stadium built in 2017 on campus.

Has Mora been demanding that we join a conference ? Obviously the loss of Fagnano and others sets us up for a different season next year anyways.

If his plan was always to take a job out west then this would be the year to do it. Next years schedule is considerably harder than this years schedule, and UConn losing significant offensive weapons QB, WR, running back etc. He would have had to do a tremendous job in the portal and recruiting this off season.

Surprised that CSU who has been bad and churned through a ton of coaches lately is the spot he's looking for. That said: "The deal is expected to come together in the near future, sources said." doesn't exactly read as if it's definite... how is it done if they don't have a deal that has "come together"

On the positive side, finding and hiring a new coach is fun. We will have lots to talk about over the holidays. The school needs to be very deliberate in getting a coach that is an upgrade, whatever that takes. We are so close to having an undeniable breakthrough in which we are good in all revenue sports and the next level sports (soccer etc) . We can’t slide back now. It is beyond important to make a great hire.

AD Dave will need to thread the needle with the next hire. A setback is okay. Going back to the days of 2-3 win seasons not long ago would be…not good at all.

Not in this environment. Once he's officially gone it opens an extra transfer portal window, meaning the window could open early for UConn, potentially impacting the bowl roster further. It'll be a double-dip for UConn players and the portal.

None of Mora’s children went to Colorado State. Current UConn grad assistant, Trey Mora, is a Colorado alumnus. His siblings went to Maryland, Claremont, and USCw.

Oh, it’s fun. Stressful, but fun. I’m already glued to the board.

It was bound to happen, but this seems like a lateral move which makes it worse.

I wonder if he coaches the bowl game? I didn't read the article.

I’m worried about the new hire but I’m ok with Mora leaving. I think he reached his ceiling here or close to it. The biggest thing I worry about is the media narrative. The media loves Mora and as a result, the media was pretty kind to us for a change. Now, they can go back to pooping all over us if we don’t make a great hire.

This absolutely sucks. I was prepared to lose him to a school like Stanford or similar. But Colorado State? Are you kidding me?

Maybe he wants to be closer to home. Idk. But I got used to our university being able to pony up and keep winning coaches. I didn't expect to lose him to a school that feels like a lateral move at best.

Think it stings so much because it is a reminder that most of the football world feels the last 2 years were a fluke and we are still a lower end program. Whereas I personally felt we had turned a corner and regained our form as a program.

Not what I wanted to wake up to. Hope we nail this hire...
