OT: College & Professional Athletes Nicknames

Some that I think have been missed.

Stan "The Man" Musial
The General - Robert Montgomery Knight
Wilt "The Stilt" Chamberlain - The Big Dipper

Further up someone put Skokey Joe - I'm assuming? he/she means Smokin' Joe Frazier

David Robinson - The Admiral
"Pistol" Pete Maravich
Tom Terrific, TB12 - Tom Brady

The Goat - Earl Manigault
The GOAT - Michael Jordan (MJ), Tom Brady, Lionel Messi

Ted Lyle Simmons - Simba
The Wizard of Oz - Ozzie Smith
David "Deacon" Jones
Orenthal James (OJ) Simpson - Juice

Original Tom Terrific is Tom Seaver.

I think Skokey Joe might be a typo. Smokey Joe Wood was a baseball pitcher in the early part of the 1900s so named of course because he threw :"smoke" (at least for the time).

Other than to check on Preacher's given first name, No. These were easy for me. I grew up in Norwalk in the 50s. Mantle, from Commerce, OK was my childhood hero Almost all Yankee games were on WPIX, channel 11 and the Dodgers and Giants before they relocated to CA were on WOR, channel 9 so I was very familiar with Furillo and Roe. By the early 70s I moved to South Florida where Czonka and Kiick earned those nickname playing for the Dolphins. My Dad, also a huge Yankee fan would tell me about the outfield of Charlie "King Kong" Keller in Left, Joe Di in Center and Tommy "Old Reliable" Henrich in Right
Well Done! Yes , WOR channel 9. Your background similar to mine though I was Dodgers fan, growing up in North Jersey. I shared hometown and high school with Jim Kiick. Best friend in college was with the Yankeed in '64,'65 - Archie Moore.

I know a " Peanuts", but not Peanut.
Peanuts Lowery, probably, Boonton, correct?

A few I came up with while perusing the thread to this point - sorry if some might be repeats:

Cheetah currently could be Tyreek Hill, or, for golfers, a nickname given DJ back a few years ago. Of course, for football fans, Tom Brady has also been called Cheetah for other reasons.

Spud Chandler and Spud Webb

Apologies, Meyers7, Tom Terrific was, as someone else mentioned, originally Tom Seaver.

Smokey Burgess

Biff Pocoroba

The Brown Bomber

Teddy Ballgame and The Splendid Splinter was also known as The Kid... back before most of us were around.

The Iron Horse... Lou Gehrig

Dizzy Dean

The Say Hey Kid... Willie Mays

Stormin' Norman Cash

The Human Vacuum Cleaner... Brooks Robinson

The Blade... Mark Belanger

Finally, for the moment, one every UConn sports fan should know: The Poughkeepsie Popper!

This is fabulous stuff. Great lists by Huskee11, Meyers7 and others. I'm humbled to be surrounded here by so many knowledgeable sports fans. Keep 'em coming. Thanks, Carnac!

Well done! No " research" needed?
It’s becoming apparent that there are more than One person that have shared the same nick name. Kudos to you if you know either one.

You are correct Tyreek Hill = The cheetah in reference to his speed. He was clocked at 4.29 in the 40 yd dash. Still waiting on the judge.
Tyreek Hill (born March 1, 1994) is an American football wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). Hill was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He attended Garden City Community College, Oklahoma State University, and the University of West Alabama.

Hill was primarily a return specialist as a rookie but has transitioned to strictly playing wide receiver. Following his rookie year, he received the nickname "Cheetah" in reference to his speed.[1] He has been selected to six Pro Bowls in his six years in the league and was named to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team as a punt returner.
