2026 Recruiting: Colben Landrew Official Visit (10/3)

He was a high recruit in football but fully switch his attention to basketball. He reminds me so much of Stephon watching all the highlight tapes he’s reposted on Twitter. Almost identical body build/type, kind of identical shooting mechanics, 6’6 long arms. He just screams Hurley player with his hustle and just how hard he seems to play every play. Colben is who I really want in this class.
I don’t know what it is with some football guys making such a natural switch to basketball.

I agree he has Steph’s body type and measureables which can make him good for us on the wing. Not sure if he has all the strength and athleticism but maybe he will have the strength by the time he gets here. Think he’ll be a better overall scorer than Castle as well.

Think one of the better things about Colben is that he seems like a 3-4 year guy we’ll have around for awhile.

His game is so interesting. Doesn’t necessarily have great athletic traits, but just knows how to play. Really good stuff in that Adidas showing.

Hard to come up with a comp, but my working one is a more fluid Tyrese Martin.
Didn't someone compare him to Jarron Cumberland in one of these threads? I think that's a really good comp.

Tyrese isn't a bad comp either, but I think Landrew will be able to bully defenders more from day 1. He seems a bit bigger

Yeah Martin was athletic as a high schooler with good height, but he got a lot stronger over his career at UConn.

Landrew has a sturdy base already. Martin was 180 lbs in high school, Landrew is at least 200 with another year to go.

That’s a crazy find and I agree is a really good comp.

I didn't watch all of this but at the 30 second mark Cumberland makes a very athletic powerful drive to the rim. I think this is a good comp too for Landrew, and if he has this in his bag we're looking good.

I remember Cincinatti, the end of games, two minutes left, they would give the ball to Cumberland just about every possession, have him make a play, dude was hard to stop.

Love Tyrese Martin, we share the same birthday, March 7th. Wish UConn had him for another season. It's so great to see that he's latched on well with an NBA franchise.

From what I've seen of Landrew, I think he is the more talented player.

Stature wise he is similar to Steph Castle and Tyrese Martin at 6'6, but the fluidity of their movement is different.

Steph is miles better than either when it comes to knowing how to use his size and strength as a defender. Tyrese had the assignment of guarding the other team's best perimeter option, but he was not as talented defensively as Steph. From what I've watch on Landrew, it's too early to tell what type of value he'll be able to bring defensively straight away, but I imagine it won't be Steph level.

Tough to tell who the best scorer of the 3 are as all of them showed great promise at the high school level and during his one season in Storrs, Castle really took a back seat and still managed multiple 20+ point games when he got into attack mode. Tyrese always felt like a 2-4 scoring option at best and didn't create as naturally as I think Landrew does.

In two of his three 3SSB games, Landrew went 13-18 from the field and two of those misses were when his team needed him to force something. I was astounded by how effortless and confident his offensive game looked. Forced almost nothing. Anytime he was open from three he knocked down his looks with zero hesitation and looked so smooth getting to the rim off the dribble.

Small sample size of two games, but if he comes to Storrs I think we only get him for 2 seasons like Hawkins, Clingan, Lamb.

What's the word on the street?
Depends on which street. On this one, it’s “stop”

Do all Husky visiting recruits get the 'trophies on the floor' treatment?

8/8 from the line in crunch time IIRC
That seems about right. The kid is not only physically solid, but mentally and emotionally as well. Doesn't let things rattle him.

I watched the videos you posted of the Wheeler vs. Pacific Prep and Wheeler vs. Newton. In both games I kept thinking that I don't get it. Landrew looked winded and was removed several times missing significant minutes, was not assertive and did not seem to be a major part of the offense (until the end of the Newton game). Plus he missed his three point attempts. His defense however was above average and I thought that's the reason why we were recruiting him. I then watched the 3SSB Select vs. Eurocamp 1 game auror posted and I saw why he was offered. His offense in this game was a 180 from the first two games I watched.

Thought Tyrese was a good comp while watching that game but after watching the film of Jarron Cumberland I think that player is a better comp.

I really hope we can land him. He was a high caliber high school football player and the training required to reach that level had to be a detriment to his basketball development. He only stopped playing football at the start of his junior year. So we're watching a kid with only one year of dedicated basketball conditioning and coaching. He and County are both committed to defense and are system players. They would be an excellent class for next year.
