2026 Recruiting: Colben Landrew interview (commit)

Oriakhi might be a decent comp as slightly less tough than Adrien was nonetheless a tough forward that escaped the Ollie regime
Should've stayed, obviously. Oriakhi though did not like playing under Calhoun.

Not talking about past teams - he's had plenty, but he's totally moved away from it and it's puzzling. If anything, why move away from what worked so well...

It's weird to ascribe it to some kind of intentional "move" by Hurley. Like it was a philosophical shift to recruit nice guys. This falls in the "every thought doesn't merit a post" camp.

I think he’s on record about wanting good kids from good families. Which would lead into the belief we’re recruiting nice guys.

Even though dogs can come from these places. But still.

no he left when his one year of eligibility was removed due to UConn issues and transferred to Missouri to play. Liked watching him.

Huh? Were Andre and Spencer nice guys with no cajones? Was Castle a nice guy with no cajones? Diarra? We’ve had a bunch of absolute dogs during Hurley’s tenure.
I think he's talking about the players/teams since we went back to back. I don't get the tattoo thing though.

Also, Liam is a fiery competitor.

Now just noticed Junior County is a PG not SG. Led Wasatch with 13.47ppg, 47% fg, 40% 3fg, 81 def rebounds (5.63 per game) and 3.58 assists per game.

OK, he also very clearly says that he wants offensively-capable players that are tough and willing to stick their nose in on defense.

He spent his first 4 years recruiting and coaching "toughness" (after KO left the program bereft of both toughness and talent) and hoping to get enough offense out of them, and it limited our ceiling.

Sure but now he’s swung so far in the opposite direction he’s lost the other side of the coin. Balance is key.

I think he's on record having players like Steph Castle, Cam Spencer, Donovan Clingan - I don't recall people complaining about his lack of meanness. Were those guys soft nice guys? Landrew seems to fit the profile. It's a bit goofy to single out this particular mix as reflective of some shift in philosophy by Hurley. But it's the Boneyard, if it's not a scorching hot take it's not worth making.

This discussion reminds me about what was said about univ of Texas football late in the Mack brown era. They said Texas had a bunch of guys you wouldn’t mind your daughter bringing home but that doesn’t make a great football team.

Of course you don’t want to go the urban Meyer at Florida route either.

There needs to be balance. Tristan and Alex were quiet guys nice guys. Cam Ajax Steph even joey California on the other hand had attitude

Yeah but Cam and Clingan don't have tattoos. Solo's entire body is covered in them so he's meanest and toughest SOB we've ever had.

We absolutely do need some elite athletes and we're missing leadership and swagger this season.

It's two years in a row and a HS recruiting class. Last year he went out and got Mahaney, Tarris and McNeeley.

Let's see what he does this portal year. Reserving any notion he stays with this template for now, as he's now voiced his frustration with make up two years in a row. Will be curious to whether he adjusts.

McNeeley fits the profile you are looking for, he's a fiery player who plays with swagger and he talks trash.

He doesn't have any tattoos though so he has that working against him.

Agree, but one key difference is that because of Mike Repole, they can miss on guys they spend big $$ on and have it not really matter.
I don’t think you know Mike Repole very well. I can assure you that he isn’t signing blank checks and handing them to Ed Kull annually without seeing some success in return.

Blows me away how many people here are experts on everything from NIL to NCAA tournament broadcast rights holders’ scheduling strategies.

Solo Ball has tattoos, but he was recruited a few years ago, so doesn't count. I'm still trying to figure this out

?? They cursed out Calhoun in public. It was in the newspapers. I even know the insults.

BTW, Alex announced his transfer to Missouri in early April. The ban did not come until later that summer. UConn couldn't have known they would use a retroactive ban because what they did was actually outside their own rules.

Nothing you said disproves my point. Sure, he does want to see success in return, which is why he didn't do this until they got Pitino. Credit to them, but Pitino has made comment after comment about not even looking at HS players and going "straight to the negotiating table." And he's even admitted how it's made his recruiting job easier.
