Cockhrnleghrn retiring to NYC

I've mostly narrowed it down to HK, Downtown Brooklyn or Park Slope. Possibly across the river in Hoboken or JC. Have you ever wanted something for 50 years and when it gets close, you can't contain yourself?

Honestly, for your purposes, I'd avoid crossing the River.

The city is expensive - no question - but there is a ludicrous amount of free, nearly free or just inexpensive activities.

I'd love to stretch to $6k, but that would be a bit ambitious. Most of my friends are in the East Village and West Village, so that's definitely a generally preferred location. The WV is out of my budget unless I get a 6th floor walkup, lol.
For what it's worth I've had both a friend and a cousin do the same thing and both really enjoyed it. You can be sitting in your apartment with nothing to do wander down to TKTS and a half hour later be watching a Broadway play. It's a cool lifestyle. My friend had a place in Boca, but would come up and rent for three months a year.

I'm not saying this is the right answer for you, but I would at least think about looking at a place in Hoboken. You will get a lot more for your dollar. It's less than a half hour on the PATH train from Hoboken to the West Village, no changes.
