I usually stick to your WBB forum, but I just noticed this thread. I'm moving to NYC, when I retire in a couple of years, and I definitely want to make some trips up to New Haven for pizza. My only first cousin is a professor at Yale, so that's another reason. I've eaten at Frank Pepe's, but only the one in suburban DC. I have now bookmarked this thread for when the time comes.

TIL: People move to NYC to retire.

$11K/month in rent? I'd be looking for a place where it's $11K/year.
New York is a dynamic place to live, with money. Rent is $132,000 a year? That’s a slightly different retirement level than I have.

My budget is $3900/month, which is plenty of apartment for a single guy who already downsized.
East Village and SoHo will get you a clean, small 1 BR or studio. 600 sq. ft. probably newer appliances. "Creative" storage. My neighborhoods of choice. Stretch to $6000 and it's a different world.

I'd love to stretch to $6k, but that would be a bit ambitious. Most of my friends are in the East Village and West Village, so that's definitely a generally preferred location. The WV is out of my budget unless I get a 6th floor walkup, lol.

It happens a lot more than you'd think.

It's not for me, but I know many folks who have retired to the city at least part time. (They tend to either have a winter place down south or a summer place somewhere in the northeast.) There's a shit ton to do and a lot of it is very inexpensive.

I can't wait. It will be worth living in a tiny studio to get out of the south.
Hey, that’s part of the charm of living in the city for some. I’ve lived in cities (Boston/SD) most of adult life up to now, and most of that was spent in studios. Where are you gonna be in NY?

I sure would if I could afford to
It is not the same as it was under Guiliani and Bloomberg. It is now dirty, noisy, and scary at night. Extremely expensive. One bedroom apartment on east side rents for 6000/mo. If you buy a condo, be prepared to spend 50,000/ year for maintainence and taxes, and Hochum and Mamdummy want it even higher. And they want to even steal more from your heirs after you croak. Forget taking the subway. Even nice stations are filled with homeless and mentally deranged. I live in NYC. Can't wait to get out. And I have been here for 50 years.

Agreed. I remember as a kid going to the city in the early 80's when Koch was mayor, there were many peep shows 😅. In the 90's and 00's under Giuliani and Bloomberg, the city got cleaned up as you mentioned. Sure, there were homeless out and about, but generally they didn't bother much. A few years ago I took my family to the city and some homeless guys were fighting right near the ticket machines for the subway in midtown (one guy was minding his business when another just flipped out and started attacking)...like WTF, not to mention the smell of vomit and piss. I'd rather walk outside in the rain then take a subway in the city.

I've mostly narrowed it down to HK, Downtown Brooklyn or Park Slope. Possibly across the river in Hoboken or JC. Have you ever wanted something for 50 years and when it gets close, you can't contain yourself?

I live in Columbia, SC and the streets are full of homeless people. It certainly isn't unique to NYC or even big cities, in general. Columbia is about the size of New Haven.

I go all the time and ride the subway without incident. People form their opinion by watching tabloid news that like to scare people.

Where are you in NY? I can’t help but laugh at your claim that NY has just now become “dirty and noisy”, and “scary at night” when you allegedly lived there going back to the 70s.

I would do HK or JC. Only thing about JC is frequent PATH maintenance, but that really only affects commuters. If you’re just retired and chilling and it turns out you’re losing convenient service for a bit, JC has more than enough going on. Newer, and has plenty of quiet areas so you’re not in the noise 24/7, and it really is just another borough. Plus easier access to EWR, and NJ is a really underrated state. Would you have a car if you chose NJ? How often do you get up to NY from SC to be so sure it’s what you want, and to have narrowed down neighborhoods so specifically?

Midtown east. I was young then and fearless. Now I'm old and prey.

In Manhattan less scary. Try it from an outer borough at night.
