This story is a complete nothing burger. At first, I thought “oh great. Another swipe at UConn by that Pitino-loving hack, Zach Braziller.” Not the case. Just Dan rehashing to Mad Dog his comments post-Maui. Let’s focus on more pressing matters… like tomorrow at MSG.

So I’m watching the Tennessee Texas A&M game. These teams have some very tough physical players battling every possession and under the basket. Junkyard dog stuff. Hurley wants that for this team but doesn’t have it and it has shown in our record.

He should start Reed then.

I'm still trying to figure out what Hurley said that offends anyone...different team different year...has a high standard always and has to adjust to the kids. Kids that are soft or want more or mail it in won't be there next year bottomline and move on...let's go beat the Redmen!!!

Here's an interview with Hurley and Auriemma regarding recruiting. They both admit that sometimes you're just wrong and you miss in regards to character, toughness and the "it"/ clutch factor. It's that simple. Yes , Dan recruited these guys, yes he's been spot on about most of them and yes he's been wrong about a few. Time will tell on some of them. Let's roll with what we've got !!

You can’t motivate everyone the same way. And you can’t coach everyone the same way. You might yell at the group. But when you have to communicate effectively with the individual. Great coaches coach to get the best out of each individual. The analysis the skills and talent of each individual and Taylor a game plan that best utilizes their skill set. And start bringing in the talent and skill set they are looking for to run the system they want. If what he is saying is true he needed to adjust to this team. And recruit the type of players that fit the profile he is looking for.

The coach adjusts. The players won’t.
Calhoun actually spoke about this from time to time. He thought he could yell at kids with good father son relationships as much as he wanted because they had the security of other relationships to take it. He thought those without a strong father type relationship with someone had to be treated more gently.

Agree. Players are individuals just like the coach. You need to have empathy in order to figure out where someone is coming from and find ways to motivate them if you are a supervisor in any field. That starts in finding people who are willing to be motivated to the needs of the group as well as their own needs and sacrificing when necessary. It's never appropriate to dis your subordinates in the press for God's sake. That is so Rick P and that is one coach you don't want to emulate. Both Sanogo and Clingan came into college with sound footwork and defensive ability for pre college level. You could make the case that without Clingan there would be zero NC's. Personally I give a great deal of credit to Dan for picking the staff he has rather than his coaching or even recruiting.

People hang too much on what these coaches say. They have a microphone shoved in their face five times a week and 98% of what comes out of their mouths is just nonsense off the top of their heads.

About 3/4ths of this team was here last year, so I’m pretty sure they can be coached however they need to be coached. They’re just not as good so the coaching in vs results out ratio isn’t the same.

Occam's Razor, It really is this simple.

anyone who is on the board clearly loves UConn. I understand that after back to back nattys, DH & staff earned alot of capitol & leeway, and anyone who would complain about our record this year I would define as entitled

He went on maddog's nationwide show before our biggest game of the year, and this is the quote he gave to cite out problems. Maybe you are ok with calling out players toughness in press or maybe you think its a nothing burger. Fine, I can accept either. IMO However its too easy to say "you all hate the coach" bla bla. We have to take the good with the bad, and there's a wholeee lot more good with DH. But to say you can't criticize his behavior on the sidelines this year or how he's explaining the season in the press is pollyanna-ish to me and you aren't calling balls and strikes IMO. Have at it Johnny Most. Let's go UConn!

Maybe consider giving more time to the freshmen who came in with junkyard dog written all over them. Or stick with what you have been and wonder why nothing changes if nothing changes.

Bottom line - did these kids just appear out of the blue or did someone recruit or picked them out of the portal?
He also picked them the previous 2 years. I will take that track record. No coach bats 1000%. Not even Calhoun. Look at Bill Self the last 2 years. Preseason #1.

Perhaps he’s saying out loud something that he thinks will get them to gel around each other?

This isn’t remotely true. We literally have fans from other programs who post here to troll us @kobe.

There is a difference between criticism and reaching to find fault in everything the guy does simply because we aren’t dominant this year. You sound spoiled. He made a vanilla comment that he’s made like 3 times since Maui and you’ve found a way to make it controversial. He’s literally saying he coached this team the wrong way early on and had to adjust based upon the personalities in the locker room. How you turned that into “throwing kids under the bus” is next to comical. But “fan” how you want.

IMO- Hurley is simply being honest and is showing his continuing evolution as a coach. He's got to be flexible enough in his coaching style -based on his roster in any particular year- to make adjustments. It's a work in progress this year. No surprises. Has been saying this since Maui.

I think some just don’t like successful people who are confident and who aren’t quiet about it. We can have a legitimate convo and just end up on different sides about his sideline antics. I completely understand fans who have an issue with that. But this quote? It’s exposing some in this fanbase I believe who just don’t care for the guy.

Honestly your posts on this topic have been totally logical even if I disagree. But keep in mind there are others on this thread and a few others who clearly have no respect for DH and talk about him as if he was along for the ride the past two seasons.
