CIAC bans Mike DiMauro

I know a lot of you are from the Fairfield and Hartford areas, so you want to celebrate a critic of UConn getting what he had coming to him. As a player and a coach who has benefitted from Mike’s fantastic high school coverage, the kids are the losers here. The CIAC can’t take deserves criticism and they’ll let the kids miss out to protect themselves. Mike does a great job covering Eastern Connecticut.

You can say what you want about him not having a Real ID - the fact is the game was moved because a number of Kilkingly parents didn’t have one either. There was an issue of being able to access the game and I think Mike’s article highlighted that, as well as the CIAC’s short sightedness well.

It's ridiculous they banned him for an exaggeration.

What's more more ridiculous is that this guy wasted an article (which got him suspended) because he's too cheap to spend $56 on a license that he needs if he ever wants to fly somewhere domestically (or else get fined).

This reminded me of a friend of friend from Fairfield prep I know, he graduated from BC. Would go out with us and would usually forget his wallet. Rarely paid for his drinks let alone buy a round, that’s the problem with an accounting degree from BC.

A passport is a real ID. How does a journalist not have the basic things needed to do their job properly since they often travel, sometimes at a moments notice....? Baffling really.

Got to the location down by the football complex and still have it on my bucket list to see a game there. A most beautiful setting overlooking the Thames River. Real ID came out in 2011 in CT hard to believe so many have not got it done when renewing their drivers license. Simple and painless and obviously something anyone in media should have.
In fairness, the last time I renewed my license I brought all my materials to New Britain and because I didn't have the full page copy of my birth certificate they denied my Real ID renewal. I did have to get the full page one for the passport I got a couple of years later. A trip to Hartford and those "highly motivated" (cough cough) people was an adventure in itself. On the bright side I now know I was born on a Thursday at 3:15pm.

Mike gonna have to go all Bobby V now.

There is irony in DiMauro complaining that the game got moved to New Britain; it probably got moved so people didn’t have to deal with DiMauro’s primary complaint about the real ID.

The Article in question...

>>>Assisted access
If this is actually the article in question, then it is absolutely ridiculous that he was banned for this. There was no “expression of violence,” just someone complaining about bureaucracy, as nobody would take his homicidal thoughts as a legitimate threat, something anyone that’s ever been to the Department of motor vehicles has done at some point.

Why was this the only game not scheduled for New Britain? I get logistics, but surely others could have benefited from closer games too. Looks like most would have been better around New Haven.

Because I don't need it for anything.

I don't want to take my passport anywhere I don't need to.

Also, I don't think I had a choice about a Real ID. All NY licenses are now Real IDs. In any event, I don't understand your original comment, given that you have a passport?

This guy is a proven donkey, and the fact that he has no Real ID, passport, or birth certificate reinforces that fact; however, they should not ban him for trying to be funny in the article.

The CIAC isn’t a governmental body
It serves government institutions and regulates government sponsored activities. As an agent of government entities (i.e., school district's) it is subject to constitutional rigors. See, U.S. Supreme Court case Brentwood Academy v. Tenn. Secondary School Dist.

The Real ID/Passport thing is probably a whole story that should have been covered better - did the CIAC know that beforehand? Why wasn't it publicized beforehand? I think making an assumption everyone has access to a passport/Real ID or even the stamped version of their birth certificate is a bit of a stretch (especially for those under 18 where passports expire faster and they may not have a driver's license). Not everyone travels. Not everyone was able to get a Real ID when they renewed their license. But also if you go to an Army football game at West Point you'll need a Real ID or passport.

As for DiMauro - yeah, he's a stupid heal on Twitter/X for some reason. It's a stupid shtick but at least he did it better than Andrew Gresh. Whether you like him or not, it was an overreation by the CIAC. It should have been a call to his editor and a retraction or something. DiMauro covered me as a high school athlete and if my daughter competed in the ECC, he'd have probably covered her team too. A lot of those people who are in HS sports writing like Sean Patrick Bowley (huge Cuse guy, but keeps it mellow on twitter) or Jimmy Zanor (BC alum) have been doing this beat for multiple decades, are really good people and typically good writers. DiMauro just created this twitter persona that was stupid but he's also been involved in this community for 30ish years.

Press: His employer can send other reporters to events from which he is banned

Speech: He can continue to be a reporter without being at the events from which he has been banned, he can even report on events from which he has been banned

No - each person has the right and the action is a punishment for view point speech.

What don't you understand about me never planning on getting a Real ID?

This is crazy work by ciac but honestly this dude has done himself no favors to make people feel bad for him. Decades of being a black hole of negativity
