The jump shot she made going to her left was pretty amazing. Very few high school players (and probably college for that matter) can dribble with their opposite hand and pull up for a jumper. It's actually easier to square up but few have the confidence dribbling with their off hand. The best I ever watched doing that was Sheryl Swoopes.

Saniya has the best left hand (off hand) I've ever seen on a girls high school player.

Commentators just updated her stats in the 4th qtr: 39 pts, 10 steals, 5-6 rebounds...... and two 'halfcourt shots'...!

Wonder if that's hyperbole or just what happened...

Nope. She made 2 halfcourt shots. They didn't count the second. Moron ref called traveling. Horrible call.

It's just what happened..........but one of the halfcourt shots didn't count because they called a walk.

My thoughts from watching two quarters of Chong's play:

The Good:
She's got legit NBA range. She shot 8/15 from three, and I saw her drain multiple threes from several feet behind the line and one while she was moving laterally. Also, yes, she did hit half court shots to end the 1st and 3rd quarters.
She's ambidextrous in a big way.
She's definitely a team-oriented guard. The offense was running through her and she was looking to pass first every time.

The Bad:
Defensive intensity. I saw her get beat 2-3 times by players that were slower than her because she wasn't getting down in a stance on defense. She also had moments where she was slow getting back down the court. I'm not going to characterize her game after such a short window, but if what I saw today is indicative of her play, she's going to have to take it up a whole bunch of notches when she gets to Storrs.

Pretty much...doesn't everyone have to do that when they get to Storrs?

Absolutely. And many kids in high school don't fully commit to defense when they're far more athletic than their opponents. But, after what I saw, it wouldn't surprise me if that was an area where she had a hard time making a transition relative to other freshmen.

Saniya has all the physical skills to play great defense; fast hands, fast feet, good anticipation, excellent lift & timing (she jumps center for Ossining). She did have 10 steals today…..not too shabby.

I’d venture a guess that her coach has instructed her to be very careful of fouling (can’t have her sitting on the bench) and if she doesn’t have an angle or is beaten by a half step, to let the opposing player go (matador defense….we discussed this in a few posts a month or so ago). When she gets to UConn the coaching staff will teach her to play TEAM defense and how to keep someone in front of her by using her feet (no hands) and to have defensive intensity at all times.

Saniya has all the offensive AND defensive skills to play at a high level and I think you’ll see her next year causing all kinds of havoc in opposing teams backcourts. Bria, Bianna, Moriah, and Saniya.......hows that for a fast, disruptive backcourt!

Exactly. In fact, I think it is a no brainer.

I agree. I think Mo Jeff is pretty good too at goi g left and shooting, but Saniya is better today at going to her offhand than players like Tiffany, Renee, or Alana Beard. And she shoots with the offhand.

Saniya has worn # 12 for a while now………so I imagine she’ll ask for the same # 12 at UConn (it’s available, Lauren Engeln wore it last)………… and hopefully, with A LOT of hard work, determination and a little luck thrown in, she’ll be able to create some fabulous history of her own for UConn jersey # 12.

Geno loves Saniya's passing..........click on this LINK to go to the complete game replay of Ossining vs Lourdes. When it starts, slide the timer to 47:41 and listen to some cool stuff about Saniya, including some comments by Geno...........................Saniya's 2 half court shots are at 24:05 and 68:39 and a long 3 pt shot at 67:30. Better yet, watch the whole game replay!

Click on this LINK and slide the timer to 24:05 to see the first halfcourt shot (just past 1/2 court).........then slide the timer to 68:39 for the second (just before 1/2 court).
