Chol Machot?

2.5 b/gm in 19.8 mins. At 190 lbs, he’d need to beef up. Below is a highlight reel, so, of course, he looks awesome. He’s not a stiff. Interesting as a pseudo-Samson to pair with Hines’ beef?

An Aussie

At 1:07 he steals the ball on one side of half court and takes maybe 5 steps to dunk the ball on the other side

Yeah, would be a nice compliment to Hines. We now know we need 2, more than serviceable, bigs to play against Mich.

Yes, please!

When first watching the highlights my first thought was Ajou Deng and concerned about how well he will hold up in the physical Big East, but the more I watched I was extremely impressed with his coordination, quickness, his handle for a player that long, his jumpshot and of course the catch and slam which we all missed seeing this past season after Samson departed.

I'm a little concerned how light he is for a 7 footer. Hopefully he can add a little more weight between now and next November though he probably makes up for his lack of bulk and strength with his length and timing. Based on watching players like him at major programs struggle to defend without fouling at an alarming rate, but maybe he has the BBIQ and quickness to defend without fouling and stay on the floor.

I'd prefer a long 5 with a little more meat on his bones, but the cost for such is probably prohibited and very tough to land. With that said I'm intrigued by his overall game and trust Hurley and the staff to make the right decision.

same here. also thinking Yell just because of his frame but it looks like he can shoot outside too

Donyell played the 3 and 4. Was not as tall and had a little more meat on his bones. Yell was a good shot blocker but got a lot of them off the ball and from behind when beat off the dribble, but Chol's game does remind me of him as well.

Chol looks like he can be a major matchup problem for some high major 4s. I'm just a little concerned about him defending the 5, but it looks like he has plus quickness and athleticism for a player his size. Reminds me of a poor man's Victor Wembanyama.

I'm just not sure how he'd do against BE bigs. I can't think of seeing many like him. I'm not saying he can't do well for what we need. I'm just not sure. Maybe he can give us enough minutes at both the 5 and 4, and they still try to pick up a raw 5 who is serviceable at a low cost if we need some brawn if Hines is in foul trouble or is injured. The latter is what scares me if Hines were out due to injury and we have to rely on Chol as our primary 5.

His body & athleticism reminds me of Brimah. Thin, but arms for days. Super active, aggressive defender, easy dunk target. Love the 2.5 blocks. Does things offensively Brimah didn't attempt... but it's the energy & activity I like. Would be a nice compliment to Hines. Not a fan of the 25 yo Washington dude that's always injured.

He took 22 threes on the season and made 6. I don't think he'd be playing a "stretch" anything.
Small sample size. If he made one more it would have made him a 32%shooter from three. His form and release look good. I know it was a highlight reel but I liked the midrange and turn around fade away jumpsuits as well. He’s not just a dunk machine.

As you said, it would make him a 32% shooter on exceptionally low volume. The difference between 27% and 32% when you're shooting less than one a game is not particularly significant. I don't think this kid would be coming here to shoot threes.

You’re right. My point was just that I think he has more upside than being Samson Johnson Jr. Hard to imagine Hurley would play him away from the basket and give him the green light from three but the kid has some skill. Hell of a defensive player but he brings more to the table than blocks and dunks.

Chol plays ball to dunk

Woah! Did not expect that. Hes very active, athletic, moves well, has some post moves, can shoot, blocks shots and seems stronger than he looks. I just cant help but think what does this guy look like playing at 220lbs? Hes not just some 7 foot beanpole this kid has a lot to work with and could turn out other be an absolute diamond in the rough. Id take him in a heartbeat.
